After Bridge Protest, cops go crazy and attack child

by A

After the Take It To The Bridge Protest on May 25th, police attacked an eleven year old girl named Sophia, throwing her on the ground and binding her arms together. She was left face down on the ground for over five minutes before they took her away. After all that, they then had the nerve to arrest her older brother Musa for bringing her to the protest.

Are the Presidio Park Police so messed up that they must beat up children to feel good about themselves. San Franciscans should be outraged!

How DARE the police department consider a brother taking his sister to a peace protest Child Endangerment? We are all ENDANGERED by this police state in America and the taking away of our RIGHTS as Americans to peaceful assembly and protest. These gestapo tactics MUST be stopped. What lesson do the powers that be want us to teach our children? To FEAR speaking out? FEAR the police who are hired by US to protect us?I will cover this story on my show this week, and give out the url for people to SEE the pictures and learn for themselves how DARK America is becoming. Isn't this right the reason our Vets fought? The reason we have Memorial Day?
Leaping fascism is taking over our country, and destroying our constitution. We MUST all rise up and protest.

Why have the lefties become so BLIND!

Only willing to look at one side of the story. Only willing to paint pictures in black and white! Whey I was a radical in the 70's at least we were intelligently studied the problems we faced before we jumped on some idiotic band wagon crying "Wolf!"

Here's a quote from the Chronicle regarding this matter:

"CHP spokesman Sgt. Wayne Ziese said all but one of those arrested were booked on misdemeanor charges, including obstructing a walkway and resisting arrest. One girl, who told police she was 11 years old, was booked on a felony charge of assaulting an officer, and taken to juvenile hall, he said. "

I guess it's ok to assault people, as long as they are the bad guys in this black and white world!

Where are your brains folks!

by Jesse
I was there. This protest was completely peaceful, and was attacked by the pigs because it was vulnerable due to it's size. The only danger anyone was in was from the pigs and their arrsenal of weaponry. They looked like storm troopers. I think someone saw a bit too much star wars recently.

I think however, that this charge of "child endangerment" is a perfect charge, because THEY were the ones that were endangering the child. The fact that they're charging this man with this gives us a way to point out the massive hypocracy shown to us here. I am outraged by the tactics the pigs used on us yesterday. I have some video footage of the girl being arrested. I'll post it up this afternoon, and you can see the excessive force being used on her. An 11 year old girl requires 3 storm troopers kneeling on her back because she is SUCH a threat to the cops right?. That is the story they're trying to sell people. You can make your own decision.

by Dave Campbell (davecampbell [at] igc.org)
Of course the cops would *never* lie about someone assaulting them! Of course a pre-teenage girl is a major threat to a 6-foot tall guy with hand-to-hand combat training and more weapons on his utility belt than Batman!

All those various commentors must be right - we're hopelessly naive to think that we can walk peacefully on a public walkway (not obstructing anyone), say whatever we want, break no laws (except the arbitrary regulations made up by the cops on-the-spot), and expect to get away with it. We're silly to think the First Amendment is in effect. And if we take our younger siblings to a *peaceful* protest, we're engaging in child endangerment, because after all we ought to *know* the cops are going to jump on us! It's our own damn fault!

Still, I continue to hold that we have exactly those rights we're willing to fight for. Use 'em or lose 'em. And anyone who thinks it doesn't matter, 'cause it's only those "other" people, you know, those crazies, who stand to get their rights trampled on, had better think again. They come for me today, they'll come for you tomorrow.

Regarding "The Other Side of the Story"

You must work for the mainstream media or something to think that any statements issued by the police wouldn't be biased. The corporate newspapers are notorious for filling their "coverage" of protests with quotes from police spokesmen as if they are gospel.

Anyway, you certainly miss the big picture here. These tactics are being used throughout the country to inhibit free speech and the more that it happens, the more your typical American becomes numb to what's going on...the end of democracy as we know it.

It's so easy to ridicule "lefties" when you're another unquestioning clone....or just one of those people who aren't satisfied with the corporate state ownership of all the mainstream media and feel the need to harass in the few outlets left for alternative points of view.

I think it is pathetic to use a child as your martyr and it is irresponsible to bring a child to a march like this. Also we were fortunate...with the bridge as a potentail terrorist target...they even let us march...but to bring an 11 yr. old on the ggbridge during a wkend when terrorist threats are high..that is unconscionable!
by j
what the f**** !? what is that about the city/ police "letting" us walk the bridge when it could be bombed? bombings don't seem to be the concern every other day when they bring in the bridge tolls and tourists $. and for many of us, well i'll speak for myself, i'd rather die in an imperfect world than have someone tell me i can't walk somewhere just because they have the power in this police state to regulate my body and actions. i don't think so. if they cared so much about "terrorists" and our safety they wouldn't have terrorized us and a peaceful demonstration of the our freedom of speech. the u.s. was founded on terrorism and cops are trained to be terrorists for the state.
by a kid
Im very sorry to tell you but i am 11 and my mom said she was going to the protest and i wanted to go!Kids have brains like adults! It is not irresponsible of parents to let their kids speak out!
< The threat of terrorism...?What did we witness on the bridge...?Should we not ride buses or go to theaters... in the event of terrorism?

How about growing up.....and taking respondsibility for your own actions?

Well isn't that great! You folks managed to tie up traffic and for What? To fuck up peoples day. Even Killing Someone...yes.

My brother has been on the list for a Kidney Transplant for nearly 2 years....with only months left to locate a donor ....and you guessed it. On Saturday one became available. His surgeon from Stanford Medical Center couldn't get to the North Bay because of you ...
SELF CENTERED, SELF SERVING, SELF ABSORBED, SELFISH....individuals. Do you think beyond yourselves....DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE CONSCIENQUENCES OF YOUR ACTION???? I didn't thing so.

Congratulations you made favorable press. BIG DEAL!!! ......It cost a life....go celebrate your stupidity.
Children are on the front lines every where - no parent in the occupied territories can protect their children from the violence that surrounds them every day. When I was a teenager I identified with the terror that Vietnamese children faced as a result of US bombings and military invasion and wanted to put myself on the line as a result. My parent couldn't stop me. I participated in peaceful protests and never faced the kind of police repression that is happening today in response to all kinds of protest. I have a 14 year old who is very politically aware. I refuse to end up in the trap that the police are trying to set for parents, guardians and minors and become an arm of the state in my family. My daughter has the right to express her convictions by demonstrating - and if I have to go to jail to defend that right, I'm happy to. I would never force her to participate in a political action that she didn't agree with. I will give her the benefit of my experience. I will worry and pray for her. But I will not let the state intrude on my daughter's political life just because she is a minor.

You take care of the girl who was arrested? Good! Why do't you take care of those who lost their lives on disco in Israel? They lost their eyes, arms, legs. They are disabled. their lives are ruined. So where is your pity?
This girl is alive and safe. Don't help her to be raised in hatred. Don't use the picture as propaganda.

I am in complete disgust as I read about the police action at the protest on Saturday! Attacking a 10 year old girl is sickening!!! I am in utter amazement filled with complete dissappointment!

by PinkDiva
hey human being: while you're at it, what about the Palestinian children? you think they are in any better condition than the Israeli kids? I myself am Jewish by birth, and I think what Israel continues to do is sickening. The US needs to stop supporting "legal" terrorism in the rest of the world. At this point, we're no better than the terrorists who crashed those planes in the US.

Mary, you are so busted on your hoax!

First of all, you said he's been on a list for 2 years, yet had a few months to go - meaning the operation was critical, but not going to kill him if he didn't get it at the exact hour he needed it.

Secondly, any problems with traffic in SF and the GG bridge would have absolutely NO EFFECT on a person traveling to the North Bay (assuming Marin country since that is the North Bay area). If you come up from Stanford, you have no reason to go through SF or across the GG bridge to get to marin country! That's what the Richmond bridge is for. LOL!

if you have a problem with what people say/do/believe, at least back up your opposing views with factual events. Outright, obvious lies are easily picked apart. *chuckle*

Mary -
Unlike PinkDiva I am going to take your post as truth word for word, unbelieveable as it may be.
I was there on Saturday and I am deeply, truly sorry for your brother's death. However, we did absolutely nothing to stop traffic or in any other way disrupt the flow of people across the bridge. We were stopped by the police halfway between the second pylon of the bridge and the Marin County side, and were forced to go back. We stayed on the sidewalk the whole time, and stayed completely non-violent. The police blocked 3 lanes of traffic with their vans full of officers in full riot gear and buses to cart off the arrested.
I'm sorry about what happened, and I know it's easy to blame those operating outside the law, but please, take these words from a first hand witness of the day's events into consideration.

let me respond respectfully to your message...
one of the reasons anti-war demonstrators were there, is to oppose needless loss of life... and this was a consideration when none of the demonstrators, to my knowledge, stepped in to lanes of traffic... the police blocked only one lane originally... and when the police stopped the march near the marin side of the bridge, no one that committed civil disobedience, to my knowledge, did so by obstucting traffic... to my knowledge, traffic was completely obstructed only when the police blocked all marin-bound traffic in order to TURN AROUND a city bus in which the arrestees were being held to take them to the san francisco side... at the san francisco side, the arrestees were held in the bus and then returned to the marin side...
in other words, the blocking of traffic was unnecessary, since the arrestees were to be processed in marin county due to the location of the arrests...
traffic on the bridge from marin toward stanford was minimally affected...
in-city traffic was effected was apparently effected but, whether this was caused by the demonstrators or by the overzealous response of law enforcement, is unclear at best...
i am very saddened by your loss, and although i do not believe that the demonstrators are responsible, as you claim, i would still like to offer my condolences, and accept that your anger is directed at those that you perceive to be responsible...

What the F*** is going on here??? On a day we celebrate the memory of those that had fallen and died for this country. For the right to live and express ourselves so long as we don't hurt anybody. And then we get this smack right in our faces? What the heck is going on with these Police officers? I can't believe there are no criminals in San Francisco that they look so gung ho to attack and restrain a 11 year old kid! Or is the Police department hiring a whole bunch of muscled men with no f***in' brains? I think the mayor need to rethink what the f*** his police officers are doing.

To the young girl who had to go through this, I hope you're not going to let them get away with it!!!

Well there you have it - one cop in Russia hits a child, so therefore that must mean that all cops are viscious, child beaters and it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the CHP officer assaulted that girl on Saturday.

Just like it must mean that all blacks are gang members and all mexicans are illegal aliens, and all arabs are terrorists, and all whites are racists and so on and so on.
by works for me
NBC 3 showed video of the Police trying to move the child out of the street. It's from the opposite angle of the AVI provided for this post. I think it clearly shows that the police in no way harmed this child and that the child clearly resisted. The video does not show the alleged assualt (kick?, punch?). Thank god the video cameras were on for this incident, because I believe it will fully exhonerate the officers.

Unfortunately. I think some of the protesters were longing for the good ol' days, and are just itching for something to get worked up about. Let me ask you this--how was this protest going to help those in Palestine anyway? You would have done more good spening those two hours at a food kitchen then trying to pick a fight with the cops.

Hey, "Works": Are you trying to say you saw this pre-teen girl feloniously assault a heavily-armed, armored and trained man three or four times her size?

They're shooting 'em in Palestine, why not beat 'em up here, eh? The offending officers and the officials who charged the child should be publicly tried, and soon.
by Noor
I am very disrupted to see the footage of this event and how it ended. I wonder if this protest was in support of Jewish/State of Israel cause would it end up in the same fashion. There is no more freedom of speech in this country. Shame on the CHP and their leadership, they should be flexing their muscles in fighting crimes and violence in the city; but they are bunch of chicken shits.

Is there followup info posted anywhere on this action? Several questions:

1. Were charges pressed against all those arrested? If so, have any of those charges been dropped or reduced? Is anyone still in custody?

2. Are charges still pending against the 11 year old?

3. Are charges still pending against her brother? If so, are these charges still felony child endangerment?

Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Fascinating how so many of the posts proclaiming how this is "Police Brutality" and how the US has become a "Police State" are from people with Middle Eastern names. Maybe they are US citizens, maybe not - but it would be interesting to see what would happen if an anti-government protest was organized in Syria or Egypt or Iraq or Palestine, or just about ANY Middle Eastern nation...

Dear Filter:
at least all the middle eastern countries do not claim to be "free-speech" countires. I agree 100% that they are away from religion and they are "no-freedom -of-speech" countries. what you failed and missed is that US claims to be "freedom-of-speech" country. that's the point all the emails with "middle eastern" names are making. if US wouldn't claim this, there would be no need to be upset about this 11 yo who had correct permits.

The conduct of the San Francisco Police is not surprising...!

Police forces all over this country have recently, post 9-11, exhibited a flagrant capacity to committing stark brutality and barbarism against civilian populations...all of which take place within the domain of established law and order....!

This is indeed a horrendous and a despicable situation, and a black eye to Police everywhere. Shame on the San Francisco Police for beating up a little girl.... and then arrest her brother! I guess they are now proud of themselves...!

this is a disgrace. We are allegedly the land of free speech and civil protest for change, UNLESS we are protesting Israel. Then we are traitors to be denigrated, fired, and arrested, even children. Do you think this will be a loyal enthusiastic American child after this experience.
by Ted Bagg (tbagg [at] minn.net)
Doug B, here's how I deal with the idea that an 11-year-old can commit felony assault on an armed, helmeted "peace officer" who is himself clearly breaking the law: Whatever conceivable resistance she offered to this violent crime constituted courageous self-defense, and calls the rest of us to combine in defense of civil society and remove all such men from power, likewise those for whom they stooge.

This attack reminds me of several other instances in which police or soldiers, engaged in illegal violence against political speech, have chosen to target children or elderly women. I suspect that this is not simple cowardice, but instead a revolting tactic consciously aimed not only at those directly assaulted but at the bonds of affection and trust that bind the group together.

This incident also marks a qualititive departure in the war against freedom, in the degree of candor with which these enforcers of wealth flouted the law from the command level on down, bluntly attacking a peaceful, formally permitted demonstration in which there was not the slightest civil disobedience. It's likely to add many to the ranks of those who have soured on the whole idea of obeying the rules.

When those charged with keeping order instead destroy it, they beg us to institute another.

by Eric Choski
The law is the law, deal with it. Besides what the heck was an 11 year old child doing at a "peace" protest. And guys, please don't turn this into a another Rodney King case. Because if riots were to occur, all rags and towels would be looted from stores...

I pray to the one and only God to start His punishment on USA everyday. The punishment is inevitable for the rule of USA is like that of Pharaoh. Were they thinking that they were taking that innocent girl as a sacrifice to their pharaohnic god ? God bless you to bring all these pictures to us.
by situation and terrain
It was too windy for their gas to work. Pepperspray is of limited value in the best of time. In the wind, it can easily blow back. So their options were limited. So were ours. We had no room to maneuver and no way to escape. If we'd have tried to save her, they'd have shot us.
by friend
I dont see where they attacked anyone . I see a girl, handcuffed, subdued and in restraints. I feel that the officers did what they needed to do. Sophia doesnt look harmed and obviously she isn't afraid or shy since she tried to strike an officer that was was doing the job that the public demands, keeping the peace.
Quit whining about injustice! Lets look at the whole story here! I think the only injusctice done was the the unfortunate police officer that had to deal with this unruly child. He is paid to do a job, should that job include assualt ? It doesnt matter if the person doing it is 11 years old! Some elven years olds carry guns and knives and will use them.
Don't try to turn this into an ethnic thing. The officer would ahve done the same thing no matter who it was that tried to assault him.
by heard it before
That's their version.
Thirty anti-war protesters were arrested on the Golden Gate Bridge Saturday afternoon, in a demonstration that backed up traffic from Daly City to Sausalito.
The march, dubbed "Take It to The Bridge," denounced Israel's occupation of the West Bank, U.S. policies in the Middle East and domestic efforts to counter terrorism.

"We've (the U.S.) placed ourselves in the line of fire by supporting Israel," said Wendy Campbell of Oakland.

"I like their right to dissent," Eric Gold of San Francisco said about the protesters. "At this time, it makes them look like idiots."

Grass Roots for Israel

He and some people calling themselves Grass Roots for Israel had commissioned an airplane to fly a banner reading "U.S.A. and Israel: Partners Against Terror," but low clouds and airspace restrictions kept the plane far from view.

March organizers with the All People's Coalition, of Oakland, expected 800 to 1,000 protesters would walk the span end-to-end between noon and 2 p.m.

Instead, around 100 marchers got about three-quarters of the way on the sidewalk when a phalanx of California Highway Patrol officers in riot gear, and shouting "go back," halted the march shortly after 1:30 p.m.

More than 150 CHP officers were on duty, along with city, bridge and U.S. Park Service police.

Four-hour protest

"At that point it was very clear they weren't going to make it and a two-hour protest was going to become a four-hour one," CHP Sgt. Wayne Ziese said.

Demonstrators pushed forward or sat down.

They were arrested and led to an awaiting Golden Gate Transit bus or a CHP wagon, which took them to Marin and San Francisco county jails.

Most of the arrests were peaceful, though some protesters struggled.

One serious scuffle involved a girl, who was charged with assaulting an officer.

Ziese said she told authorities she was 11 years old, after she was arrested for allegedly throwing a punch.

The CHP pepper sprayed at least one demonstrator.

Bridge traffic was temporarily halted during the arrests.

The CHP reported that back-ups spilled onto San Francisco city streets, stretched all the way through Golden Gate Park and as far as Interstate 280 and north to Sausalito's Spencer Avenue.

Most were charged with obstructing a sidewalk, Ziese said.

Demonstrators also were charged with violating the special permit granted by the Golden Gate Bridge District last week.

That permit prohibited signs, banners, leaflets, bullhorns or noise-making implements, though the bridge district let protesters march later than is normally allowed, spokeswoman Mary Currie said.

She said the measures were needed to ensure the safety of traffic, tourists and demonstrators.

Demonstrators called the restrictions censorship.

Food Not Bombs

"We don't have free speech just because the government lets you have free speech. That's not how free speech works in a democracy," said Jeff Giaquinto of Food Not Bombs.

Bystanders, tourists and motorists greeted the march with as many one-fingered salutes as two-fingered peace signs.

There were horn honks of support and shouts of derision. Some tourists, seeing more than a dozen CHP patrol cars before the march, wondered if there had been a new terrorist alert.

Neutrals were mostly bemused.

"I wanted to see the show," Jim Drennan of San Francisco said. "I'm all for peace, but this doesn't make a lot of sense."
by Rightist
Hurray! I'm glad they disrupted your stupid little rally.
I think that being on the bridge was a stupid idea anyhow.
Pick something that has NOT been targeted for a terrorist threat next time, some local a bit less sensative.
I think the police should not have given you PROPAGANDA machine such a suitable picture. I don't think the girl was Terrorized, or assaulted, or molested, or beaten as you all would like to make it seem. This is trully the best example of propaganda I have seen lately.
It's funny how you call the police fascist, and complain about the crushing of Democracy in America, while you are protesting the US support (check the public op polls on this) for the only free Democracy in the Middle East.
If you were Palestinians you would all be KILLED!
and you're all upset when one bratty kid has to lay face down in the grass for 10 minutes.(she probably sleeps on her stomach anyway, its not a wholey uncomfortable position)

The Main Problem in the Middle East
Jihad Renee Albanee
28 May 2002

Many political personalities and leaders accuse the Israeli army and the State of Israel for all possible ills: Massacre of the Palestinian population, destruction of Palestinian cities, genocide, war crimes - a very long list.

It is evident that all those claims, some of which may be completely sincere, evince the claimants’ total ignorance of the main problem in the Middle East. I am going to sum up this problem in one sentence: The will of the non-Arab minorities in the Middle East to survive.

The two principal and largest minorities in the region are the Christians and the Jews. There are two states in which these two minorities still have their full human rights: Lebanon and Israel. In Egypt, the sole Christian who had the possibility to ascend to an important post was Boutros Boutros Ghali. He had been appointed by the former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat as delegate minister for foreign affairs, a post equivalent to that of a French cabinet chief, because Egyptian law forbids Christians from acceding to the posts of full ministers. In Iraq, the only Christian who fills an important post is the Catholic Tarek Aziz, Saddam Hussein’s long-time friend. In both above mentioned countries, and for that matter in all Arab countries, Christian rights are almost non-existent.

In 1975, Yasser Arafat and his cohorts waged their attack against Lebanon and particularly against the Christians. They hoped that within three weeks at the maximum, the Lebanese Christians would exile themselves to the United States, Europe, Australia and Canada, allowing Arafat to create an Islamic-Palestinian state in Lebanon. “The road to Jerusalem passes through Jounieh,” the Palestinian leaders were saying at that time. Jounieh is a Christian town situated to the north of Beirut, that is, in the opposite direction from Jerusalem. At present, Lebanon is laboring under the Syrian yoke, a fact to which the countries that defend human rights are totally indifferent.

Since the destruction of Lebanon and its occupation by the Arabs, the latter have decided to attack the second non-Arab country in the Middle East, namely Israel. Let us recall that Israel was created in 1948. The Arab countries rejected the partition of Palestine into two states, Jewish and Arab, and decided instead to throw the Jews into the sea (Nevertheless, a Palestinian state was founded, in Jordan. However, the Jordanian King regarded that state as his personal territory, though 70% of the population was Palestinian). From 1948 to 1967, the Arabs constantly preached the destruction of the State of Israel. During those years, the Jordanian King Hussein had made Jerusalem Judenrein (empty or cleansed of Jews), Jewish cemeteries were vandalized and destroyed., and some 58 synagogues were destroyed or turned into stables for Jordanian horses. It is ironic to note that during those 19 years, when Egypt ruled Gaza and Jordan ruled the West Bank, including eastern Jerusalem, no Arab country yearned to see the creation of a Palestinian state there. All that those Arab countries wanted was the destruction of the State of Israel. However, once Israel had conquered these territories and united Jerusalem, Arab countries started calling them ‘occupied territories,’ and, unable to destroy Israel directly, they began to call for the establishment of a Palestinian state on those territories. In addition, Egypt, in its aim to weaken Israel to better destroy it, requested at the Madrid conference the elimination of Israel’s nuclear arsenal.

Naive Israeli personages were recruited in order to weaken the State of Israel. Among these, we will cite particularly former Prime Minister Ehud Barak. He believed that by withdrawing from southern Lebanon and by betraying his Lebanese allies, he would be able to achieve peace with the Arab people of the region. What happened, however, was just the opposite. The Israeli retreat from southern Lebanon was perceived by the Arab countries as a sign of Israel’s weakness. A few short months following this retreat, Yasser Arafat gave orders to attack Israeli civilians under the cover of a Palestinian revolt - Intifadah. Weapons, financed by Iran, made their way to the PLO via Syria and occupied Lebanon. Iraq paid considerable sums of money to the families of terrorists who exploded themselves in Israel, killing Israelis.

Peace movements have always been activated when Israel was undergoing murderous attacks, in order to incriminate the Israeli population and leadership. This strategy had been used in Western Europe during the Cold War. The political parties, satellites of the Soviet Union, used to demonstrate all over Western Europe or manipulate associations, which would then demand the dismantling of American nuclear arsenals located in Western Europe as well as the departure of American troops from West Germany. Yet, the aim of these two requests had been to facilitate the invasion of Western Germany and adjacent countries by troops from the USSR.

The same method has been used for many years in Israel and against Israel for the purpose of weakening it, with a view to destroying it. Dozens of Internet sites were created to request Israeli leaders to quit southern Lebanon; huge demonstrations took place before and after the signature of the so-called peace accords between Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin. All this was for one purpose only: The political and military weakening of Israel and the establishment on its very borders of a terror organization called the Palestinian Authority, whose sole objective is the destruction of Israel.

Despite the presence of a Palestinian State called Jordan, Israel has agreed to the creation of a second Palestinian state in Gaza, Judea and Samaria. Yet, the Israelis have not relinquished their claim to a united Jerusalem that must remain the eternal capital of the State of Israel. However, regardless of this affinity for Jerusalem, Ehud Barak proposed to Arafat at the Camp David summit to surrender eastern Jerusalem in three stages. Yasser Arafat refused. Why? Because he does not believe in the co-existence of two neighboring states, one Palestinian and the other Jewish. History is repeating itself. Yasser Arafat had once settled in Lebanon and erected a state within a state before waging his murderous war against the Lebanese, the people who had welcomed him. Today, the same Arafat has decided to destroy the State of Israel. Regretfully, the Israelis have not learned anything from the past and have not understood that one doesn’t let the wolf into the sheep pen.

Some imagine that such a Palestinian state, even were it to be established without threat to Israel, could survive on its own. They are wrong. The Palestinians are also subject to internal Islamic-Christian tensions. The Christians of this Palestine will have little choice: Either live without any rights, similar to the Christians in other Arab countries, or quit.

As for those in the West who believe that they’ll make a political career by defending the Palestinians who live in Judea and Samaria, I would like to say to them: Before tackling problems that are beyond you, it would be more profitable to interest yourself in problems closer to your country and its honor. For instance, you might ask the French and American states to arrest the criminals who’ve ordered the murder of French and American citizens (civilian and military) in Lebanon. Here is a tip that might help you: In 1998, the Syrian Minister of Defense Mustapha Tlass announced publicly that it was he who, in 1983, had ordered the Hezbollah and other Moslem organizations to attack the barracks of American and French soldiers in Beirut (there were some 270 American soldiers and 85 French soldiers killed). This same minister, friend of France and the United States, had also announced that he refrained from authorizing an attack against Italian soldiers because he had a crush on Italian actress Gina Lolobrigida. How sad that neither France nor the United States had had a Lolobrigida of their own. She might have saved the lives of soldiers on a mission of peace.

this kind of stuff should be expected of the police. they always use the excuse that they are affraid of people but look at this they arrest a 11 year old for being out on a bridge this is a outrage and that cop with his knees on her should be fired and charged with a crime instead of the girls brother
by Orwa
As a great example of the demagogically puritan parties I'd like to quote here, just to help Mr"oppression" promote his party and to re-think about such an ideology's opportunity of fighting oppression!!!

"The principles of the Guardians.
Certain basic conditions must be availed to secure:
a) The durability of political movements.
b) The realisation of their aims.
We have therefore incorporated the following principles to found our Movement on:

1.- Intellect: People vanish, while intellect lives on. Our Movement gives first priority to this matter.
2.- Alertness: Our Movement is not only aware of all our Nation's political, social and economic problems, but it is fully conscious of their causes. It is capable of the diagnosis and possesses the cure.

3.- Insight: Our Movement possesses all the solutions to our chronic crisis. These solutions, having undergone a meticulous and rational study, can radically and practically remedy our case and modernise our Country.

4.- Decency: No Movement can carry out any reform unless it enjoys morality and idealism.

Our movement, being extremely cautious about this fact, has made it impossible for immoral members to find way to its ranks.

5.- Discipline: Our Movement is distinguished by the enlightened discipline of its members, a conviction which is essential for the execution of reform by political movements and parties.

6.- Charity, Insight, Freedom: All members holding responsible positions must enjoy these qualities. by charity, we mean the love of God, of the earth and of the human beings. Our senior executives must have great concern for their subordinates and must be exemplary in their conduct, even in their personal manners.

7.- Sense of Responsibility: Irrespective of the post or the mission allocated to them, all members must act as if they were the only persons held responsible in that specific instance, and use their initiative, relinquishing dependence and resignation.

8.- Missionary spirit: All members are enticed to preach their convictions, enlighten the greatest possible number of our countrymen and prepare the national opinion to accept and support the new reform movement.

9.- Hierarchy: As many cadres as possible must be rationally availed by the Party, to accommodate the greatest number of new partisans.

10.- Ambition: We are convinced that the new State we contemplate, must be founded on national pride and manned by dynamic and resolute leadership. Ambition generates power from weakness and valiance from hesitance.

We are also convinced that small nations feed on colossal ambitions and flourish on colossal roles."

Absoutley Outraged!!!

Ever since Sept 11 US has taken advantage rushing through new laws banning organisations , curbing civil libertiesand reducing safeguarding human rights violations

Reports around Europe say that 1000+ in US have been secretly arrested mostly foreigners since sept 11

Have US ever heard of the Geneva Convention???

by G.Adams
No Arab/Muslem is to lecture Americans on human rights violations, weve seen the state of human rights in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Iaman, Lybia etc.
by Rightist
" Reports around Europe say that 1000+ in US have been secretly arrested mostly foreigners since sept 11"

Yes, they have arrested a lot of foreigners who generally don't have citizenship in the US. In doing so the gov't has prevented further terrorist attacks.
Thank you.

by Nyr
Who do think is sponsoring the state terror in these countries? WHO? youve seen human rights violations, no youve seen nothing, you didnt try to be a subject of them, you didnt live under them, you didnt think of the corporate root of all violations, Are you human or just American?

Well, I see no assault on a child......I see a spoiled brat kid in handcuffs, where she rightly belongs!

Did you ever stop and think that this is just the kind of child to which they strap C4 explosives and send her into a crowded area full of Jews? And you have the audacity to call the above photos "abusive"? Is truly is to laugh, get a grip on reality folks! <rolleyes>

Its time the foreigners that have come to this land of the free to remember how they got here and try to help instead of hinder the police in their effort to protect all the people of this great land, when they are following orders, to obey them and not think because they are here where we have such an abundance of freedom that they can do as they please!
If you can't abide by our ways and customs with laws then by all means catch the next plane back to your own land where I am sure you will be much happier!

She took a swing at the cop. ITS A FRIKKEN CRIME. Doesn't matter if she is 80 pounds or he is 250. If youi don't like the law, ask your assembly man to change it. You liberal bleeding heart whack jobs cry like pussies when the bad guy is at your door. They you want "the pigs" there in 5 minutes or less. If they don't make it in time, then you want to sue 'em for being to slow. Make up your minds. Do you believe in the rule of law, or are you egg-sucking anarchists? IF YOU CAN'T DO THE TIME, DON'T DO THE CRIME.
by TC Rider
The eleven year old and the rest of her family should be deported back to Jerusulam.

Where are the pictures of the cops hitting the girl? Maybe she's learned that it's not nice to hit cops.
The pro-Terror Palestinian activists, spokesmen and representatives lie constantly. I'm not surprised that they'll lie about this assault. The real child abuse is that conducted by the Palestinian terrorists, when they use teenagers as homicide bombers, when they use 10 year olds as human shields to protect terrorists and when they murder 5 year olds in their beds. These marchers are acting as human shields for the bloody, brutal murderers. You marchers are all evil, sick people. Oh, btw, you're liars too, but no surprise there.
by Michelle
This outrage about human rights violations coming from Muslims is a little too hard to swallow. If I were Muslim-American I would spend a little more time trying to present a positive peacefull image and not adding more fuel to the fire. I can assure you that people of Middle Eastern decent have created a very negative image of themselves and I am sure that there are may who don't deserve it. Now is not the time to get into problems with the police and advertise it! Spend your time on something more postive.
by Bob
Maybe the brat should have been at home instead of marching in a protest. You're either an American or you're not, this brat is not. She and her family are free to move back to the middle east and take advantage of all the opportunities that a move like that would provide.

Like being blown up by a homicide bomber.

Beat it, we aren't interested in your holy war.

Having been in both the Bay Area during the antiwar protests and the Free Speech Movement in the early '60s and in Santa Barbara during the riots there in 1969-70, and having been whacked by the cops then, I'm no stranger to police violence and have no patience with it. That said, however, cops have a tough job and those who believe in civil disobedience and protest have a responsibility not to provoke assault. Remember when we were trained to go limp and not make any threatening movements when the cops got close? I do!

This doesn't look like police abuse to me. If the kid really took a swing at the cops (I wasn't there, so I'm not sure who to believe), then they were justified in arresting her. The bust looked pretty clean to me. The chpies held her at arm's length and put her face down. C'mon man, that's wthat they always do to protect themselves.

I don't want to hear about moslems bitching or that stupid professor above who said 'i used to say the us was so great but now i won't'. Stuff and Nonense. Ain't nowhere in the world anybody's as free as here. Yeah, we've got a long way to go, but doesn't anyone read the papers about what's happening around the world and how these moslem states treat people -- especially women! Wow, what reactionary scum they are! And the old Eastern bloc countries: didn't anyone read The Black Book of Communism -- written by French leftists, not a bunch of capitalists., which really laid out the lack of any freedom under Communism. It's enough to make an old SWP disgusted.

i'm just not sure we need all these moslems here if they don't want to be part of a tolerant, open society here. they want to remake even america as an islamic country. Man, anybody read the Koran and see what they're really like? Makes Tricky Dick look like George McGovern! No thanks, send 'em home.

I feel the same way about this as you do. if they don't like the way we do things here in "OUR" Country, GO HOME! The girl should have never been there in the first place. Yes, we do have a freedom of speech but who wants to hear them standing up for the idiots in their own Country? Go home! We don't want you people here. All you do is cause us American's trouble and grief. For God's sake, your protesting to stop what's going on over there, but what are we supposed to do to your people for what they did to ours? leave them alone? Like hell! They are getting what they deserve. Actually, what they've had coming to them all along. It's about time that's all!

There are some here who are saying that because this 11-year-old allegedly threw a punch at a cop, she deserved what she got, a felony charge of assaulting a police officer.

So, I ask you then, where is your cutoff? You feel it is appropriate to charge an 11-year-old with a felony for this crime. Would you feel it was appropriate if she was 10 years old? How about 8? Perhaps you feel that we as a society should be charging 6 year olds with felony assault if they get mad at an officer and try to punch him or her? Perhaps we should have cops stationed out at our kindergartens, ready to step in to protect us when these young but dangerous criminals get out of line.

Again, I ask you, where is your cutoff?

As for some believing that because she was only 11 years old she shouldn't be anywhere near a protest... why do you think this!? It seems to me that it would be an excellent civics lesson. Way too many people are totally turned off of politics the way it is. It seems to me that there should be many more 11 year olds participating, not less.
by Jeb Stuart
I have to make this brief, because I have to get to work (what a concept, huh, Lefties?).

First of all, you are all complaining about the wrong things, regarding the Police State we are becoming. That is because most of you on this thread are Lefty San Fransiscans that have lost your ability to think. Many of you here have apparently converted to a religion, or come from countries dominted by a religion that has no use for liberty OR peace. I hate your religion. It is dark and meaningless and Satanically-inspired.

That girl (very large for her size) was arrested because she was obnoxious, and the police can't just let children assault police officers, even if physically they may be in no danger. They had to make the arrest for the girl's sake. I don't see any abuse here. You want to see examples of police brutality and abuse of power, there are plenty of examples to find, and I can point you to some real samples.

They did the right thing to arrst her older brother. In true Muslim fashion, he was letting his little sister assault people, and endanger herself. What gentleman those Muslim men are. What brave, manly, men.

Finally, if you think I am completely unsympathetic - in a way I'm not. I think it is ridiculous that the protestors need a "permit" to protest, with guidelines and rules. that's absurd. That isn't in keeping with the right to free speech or the right to peaceably assemble. If you have to get the government's permission to protest it, where is free speech? I think the police should have stayed at a good distance, if there were no counter-protestors, and let the fools blow off steam, so that they won't go walk into a restaurant somewhere and blow themselves up.

But I believe in free speech because I agree with my ancestors, whom most of you on this site probably despise. but you can thank THEM for what freedom you still have, for the peace we have, for the prosperity, and for this forum.

I will fight for their ideal, for the sake of my posterity. You will have to kill me before you completely destroy what they have handed down to us. You Lefties, anti-American Muslims, and lovers of angrogeny and mediocrity are the reason we are becoming more and more of a police state. And you Bushies, don't think you're on my side - your man's a fool, a crook, and a typical lying politician!

There, that feels better.

by death to terrorists!
Stupid brat, if she wants to surrender to the terrorists, I''m sure we can arrange a one
way trip for her to the Arab nation of her choice. The freedom to protest only exists because
people will willing to fight and die for it.

Pushing a cop like that only shows what a spoiled brat she is, I bet her parents let her do whatever
she wants and let their kids push them around. She's better off learning at 11 that the world doesn't
work that way then finding out later.
by Antisophist
Nice points. I wasn't there, but the pics depict a clean bust from all signs.

The "stuf fan' nonsense" comments regarding civil disobedience are extremely well taken. One wonders what the Middle East (Israel, Palestine--Saudi Arabia, Syria, and even Kashmir) would look like if the infernally stupid Moslem radicals had embarked on a Gandhi-esque course.

Certainly, a protest like the Golden Gate one will persuade no one. And foolishly, it merely identifies our enemies.
by Craig Cutter
Oh the humanity! It's not a game girly...go back to the land of your people (and take your family with you) to protest and take a swing at an Israeli officer. I would love to see the pictures!
by Craig Cutter
And by the way, my niece goes to Carlton and I hear that this 'young lady' is quite the b i t c h.

Hey, Mr/Ms Ali,

God IS answering your prayers - He IS punishing America. He has allowed us to elect criminals to office for some time now, and he is allowing us to be flooded with more and more Muslims, with your dark, meaningless religion, to change our culture. That's the worst kind of punishment. Much like that of Rome's.

SHE HIT THE COP!!!! End of story. I agree with the guy who called her a spoiled brat. Now she (hopefully) has learned a lesson.

For all you Anti-American liberals, you have been putting Christian children in shackles like this for decades, so what again is your problem? I bet none of you even blinked when a kindergartner was intimidated and suspended for saying grace before her meal in GASP the presence of other students. You all are such a bunch of dishonest hypocrits. If this really shocked you, you would turn your indignation inward and look at all the children you have shackled and pushed to the ground for your ideals.
Anyone who would support the peoples who caused the death of 3000+American citizens deserves jail time and thier children sent to REAL American citizens for reeducation to save thier lives from the scourge of thier anti-American parents, brothers, etc. I wonder if any of you even shed a tear at the photo of the broken body of the person who had jumped out of the 90+ floor of the wtc? Where is your righteous indignation at this vile act? Where are your demonstrations at "Arab-American" and Islamic organizations that have yet to condemn ALL terrorist actions instead of serving thier own vile self interests? Where are your like protesting in the markets of Israel and being a human shield against homocide bombers? You are the most dishonest bunch of scum and I think America is beginning to see you for what you are.
by 5th Generation Californian
Those of us old enough to have been in the FSM, civil rights movement and the antiwar movement should remember the reasons we succeded as well as we did -- and we did, if only partially -- were because we showed the the moral bankruptcy of responding to peaceful protest with violence. Everyday Americans could identify with clean cut kids and respectable looking men and women of all colors submitting peacefully to arrest to make a point. Even the cops (outside the South) were usually subdued. Police riots occurred when the pigs were provoked, and didn't help the cause.

India is free of Britain today because of Ghandi's nonviolent movement, and the British overreaction -- including the Amritsar massacre, not because of violence and guerilla warfare.

That murdered Dutch professor/politician Pym Fortun (sp?) had a real point about Moslem immigrants: they are a threat to the progressive and tolerant multicultural society many would like to see us become. If being and American means anything, it means the liberal progressive values that break down all barriers to participation in society and encourage acceptance of others. The only thing we can't accept very much of is those who would destroy what we are builidng.

I am not a big supporter of the police. My father himself is a political activist and very much against police. It saddens me to see how someone would attack the police officers for doing thier jobs. I don't really think the girls age or race or ethnicity had anything to do with her getting arrested. I am not saying i believe the police, but they do have their side of the story too. Police arrest all sorts of people every day. Young, old, black, white, and so on. I am sure that a different tune would be being played if this didn't happen to someone at this rally. If she did do what they said, then they handled it correctly. Just because she is eleven doesnt mean she gets a soda pop and some candy and told to sit and wait for her dad. Come on people. People just need to open their eyes and see the whole picture. I really don't believe that the police officer would pick this girl out for no reason, i might be wrong, but i am intitled to my opinion. I do not agree with her brothers arrest. In the end, some one will learn a lesson.
by for FREEDOM
I'm sure that there is a reasonable explanation for why whe was arrested, and laid on the ground, the way she was. Know one really knows the whole story just what we see in the picture and what is shared with the us via news

Now days children lack discipline...No doubt about it... we should be able to discipline our own children and not get in to trouble with the law. That way the law won't have to discipline them for us.

We have the First ammendment for a reason but some people abuse it.

I feel if she felt old enough to do her part she should pay the price.
Don't do the Crime if you can't do the Time.

I'm am for the police officer who are only here to Serve and Protect those who choose to use that service.

Again, because of the Sept. 11 bombings, the US has had to change.....but, it is still the best Country to live in hands down. If you are unsure of that, then because of our freedoms in this land, you can choose to go back to where you came from.
That "child" did not belong at a Protest, and her brother was wrong in taking her there and her parents were wrong in letting him!!! These pictures do NOT in anyway show her being "mistreated, abused, molested etc., etc. What it does show is that she was arrested for something that is illegal. Read on to other notes and read what the person says that was on NBC 3 news. What it also shows, is that she is learning a life lesson for a privilaged and nieve girl. Her Parents need to educate her more on the laws of the land and make her and her other siblings realize just because they have money and privilage, they cannot do what they want. They are also welcomed to go back to their parents homeland and find out what would happen if they did this over there. I'm sure she would have been treated much differently....
by Mags
It is wrong that police have charged the girls brother with child endangerment, the only endangerment I see is being dealt out by the CHP officer digging his knee and his bulk into the back of the 11 year old girls knee.

With September 11th, the terrorists really did win, they've made average people in America paranoid and afraid to question their government. Questioning ones government is why and how our country of the United States was formed.

Normally I would criticize people for the "they are tying up traffic" argument, but I am man enough to realize when a legitamate problem occurs.

I'm sorry for your brother. I pray everything works out.

Grow up people. You live in the US. You spit, punch, slap or shove a cop...YOU GO TO JAIL. Period. If you don't like it...leave. Quit whining about it.
Yes, the child has a right to a peaceful protest, but that ended when she shoved the cop. Would you be saying all this if the same actions were done by an 18 year old? Maybe someone should of informed the child of what she should expect and her mannerisms if the police were called out. Shame on her family. The police were doing their job, and there is NO footage of the officer abusing her. Jeez.

Hey, Sorry to see that young girl abused by the SF police chief wannabe. I have a few questions?
Does your city have law requeriing police to live in thier own town or can they move?
As for people in CA. you are a very strange bunch and if this happened in NYC there would be hell to pay and that police man could not hide.

What has your mayor done to fix this situation besides look like a pimp and date young Asian women?

As for the police they have forgotten the order part of the law and order. They think that they are the law and forget that that they have become facsists and this will all come back in the form of bad Karma. They forget that they are part of the community and not until they are threatened with the same abuse do they react. It is a sad situation.
On the other hand this sort of abuse has gone on for years in places like LA, Oakland, and Brooklyn, Cinncinatti and people don't care because it happened to minority kids. So I am really sorry but if you do no take care of all people when a bad thing happens then don't complain later when it happens to you.

On the other hand this sort of abuse has gone on for years in places like LA, Oakland, and Brooklyn, Cinncinatti and people don't care because it happened to minority kids. So I am really sorry but if you do no take care of all people when a bad thing happens then don't complain later when it happens to you.

Get a life people ! A protest like that is no place for a child who thinks its a game, in the interviews she is well rehersed ,thanks daddy , looks like a lawsuit for us to pay for! Any excuse to sue the state which costs us all in the end . Thanks brat!!
by Bob Bates (tn_bob_maps [at] hotmail.com)
Well, if you strike a cop during a protest, what do you expect to have happen? And what the heck were you thinking in having a child at a protest like this? Did you need someone to hide behind or someone to use for propaganda purposes?

No sympathy here.

People of the Middle East "got here" because US planes destroyed thier homes, because the CIA has placed horrible dictatorships over there to repress people for the convinience of oil companies, because GM and Microsoft want cheaper skilled labor, not because this place is any "Bastion of Freedom and Democracy" because it obviously is not.

I understand the right to assemble in a peaceful manner but when you start hurling insults at the police officers who are under orders and just doing their job I have a real issue with your selective vision of this scenario.

This little girl should not have been there period. I'm a politacally active member of my community and I involve my kids by telling them about events from the news or from personal experience but I would never take them into one of these events because STUPID PEOPLE DO STUPID THINGS at such venues.

Whether that be something like this where a few militant idiots ruin the experiecne for everyone else or a more lethal situation can occur where a militant opposition shows up in force and begins a riot or shooting incidence to make there opposing view heard.

Good parenting includes knowing when to say "NO, YOU CAN NOT GO THERE!!!". Apparently not everyone is capable of controlling their children, hence the obvious problems with our society today; children who rule over their parents!!

You see the results everyday in the gang violence in our cities, if those kids had REAL PARENTS WHO TAKE CHARGE FOR THEIR KIDS ACTIONS, these gang members would not be roaming the streets at night causing mayhem. They'd be home doing their homework and sharing some quality time with both of their parents!!

People want to know where the cutoff is. They say that a child shouldn't be arrested assaulting a police officer at a rally, but then they turn around and say she's old enough to be at an adult rally over adult issues. Do you see your contradiction. A crime is a crime. If she was 3 and hit an officer, she hit an officer. Letting someone walk for that is teaching them, its OK. At 15, 16, 17 is it still ok or now is it wrong. No it was always wrong.

If the parents felt the child was old enough to be at the rally, then the cops were well in line to think she was old enough to be arrested for illegal behavior.
In a country where children are taught in school that an accused person is innocent until proven guilty, an awful lot of people seem to not have absorbed the lesson.

Let's not forget that the entire body of police, from the commander on down, were collectively committing a particularly egregious crime:
violent suppression of peaceful, absolutely law-abiding political speech. The police used force to illegally terminate the demonstration long before the permitted time had expired. Anyone who views the first video about the demo will hear the screams and see that at least two of the more vocal speakers had received black eyes from somebody. The violence and the blocked traffic are both purely the fault of the police, not the people engaged in law-abiding exercise of their, and our, most important civil right.

Any resistance to this crime on the part of an 11-year-old girl is something to celebrate. She, at least, understands what America is supposed to be about.

Nothing is LESS American than obedience to illegitimate authority. I recommend this link to those above, calling themselves patriots and americans, who advocate it:
http://www.nara.gov/exhall/charters/declaration/declaration.html
In particular, the following words:

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long rain of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

it is not that you don't like it you leave the place. if that was the case, U.S. would have remained in its shackles of slavery and racism forever. People have to change the way things are, if they are not just. If people don't fight things don't change. Much contrary to american people, the american goverments have been manipulative in most parts of the world and have caused terrible conflicts. The american foreign policy has to be scrutinized, and right actions to be taken.. Else, the world in large is going to see terrible conflicts in the coming years.

The girl should not have been there and should not have attacked the officer. At 5'7" and 100+ lbs she is the size of many of the women I work with that average 5' 1"-5'4" and about 110 lbs. If you think a 5ft 7in 100lb person can not do damage think again.

Charge her and her brother to the MAX.

by k
Geeze, so many assertions by people that the 11-year-old girl and her brother, should among other things, be 'charged to the max'.

I'm extremely curious of those who think this way: exactly why do you think her brother should be charged?

And do you really believe that it is in the best intersts of society to charge an 11-year-old with a felony, especially for something as minor as this?(!)
by Mike
I can't beleive you people who automatically take the side of this 11 year old girl without really knowing what happened. My gut feeling is that she probably did something stupid and got herself arrested. Why do i think this? Because I know what it's like to be young, full of emotion, and caught up in the moment. When I was 13 I did something stupid at a protest, and got myself arrested. Yeah, sure, at the time I thought f@$!ing pigs, etc., etc but now I look back at it and realize I was just stupid.

What the Israelis are doing to the Palastinians is wrong, what the Palastinians are doing to the Israelis is wrong. Whether one acts in response to the it doesn't matter. Two wrongs don't make a right. If this girl assaulted a police officer, she was wrong, period. It doesn't matter what her cause was or how young she was.

Before we jump into conclusions, we need to see the footage before she was handcuffed. Though i am against foreign policies of U.S, am no way jumping into conclusions. though the police officer kneeling down on a 11 yr old is disturbing, i would like to see what caused it.. If the girl hit the officer, sure what happened following that is expected.. Lets not mix the two issues here, anti war protest is legitimate way of protesting american foreign policy, if there was an abuse by the officer, that should be looked at as well. but just because, you support the protest, you don't have to support the violence often exhibited by protesters..

If you are going to protest with grown adults, prepare to act and respond as an adult. How young is too young or too skinny or too short to be arrested for assulting an officer? She went too far and is now going to be punished. What kind of irresponsilbe person takes an 11 year old to an anti-war protest?
Especially after 9-11, in this country? That person should also be brought up on charges, the police, I don't think so.

That is what the majority of these posts are. Don't you idiots realize that the First Amendment is exactly what these fundamentalist Islamic pieces of shit hate the most? People aren't supposed to have rights in their eyes. Either you follow their brand of religion or you are killed. If this girl takes a swing at a cop, it is a felony and she should be punished. I keep hearing about the poor Palestinians and makes me want to wretch. Poor poor people...blowing up babies at ice cream Parlors.

The best thing that could possibly happen would be for the USA to expand this war and help the Israeili's take out the Hezbollah, Hamas, and other groups that infect the world. Sophia and her brother have the right to protest protected by the Constitution. Her brother did nothing wrong in allowing his sister to accompany him to the planned peaceful demonstration. Charges against him should be dropped.
Whether Sophia swung at the CHPofficer or not, the officers overreacted. She mat be guilty or a misdemeanor, but the CHP officers are guilty of a felony for their abusive treatment of a child under 14 years of age.

I FIND IT VERY IRONIC THAT THE VERY GROUP THAT PROTESTS VIOLENCE AGAINST HUMANITY IS THE SAME GROUP ACTING VIOLENTLY. WHEN A PROTESTOR (11 YEARS OLD) ASSAULTS SOMEONE, THEY DESERVE TO BE PUNISHED. I ALSO FIND IT INTERESTING THE ARGUMENT THAT SHE IS NOT OLD ENOUGH TO BE PUNISHED BUT OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW THE COMPLEXITIES OF WORLD EVENTS TO PROTEST. WE DO NOT TAKE OUR CHILDREN TO BARS AND CERTAINLY SHOULD NOT BRING THEM TO EVENTS WHERE SUCH A MINORITY VIEW IS LIKELY TO BRING OUT THE CRAZIES IN OPPOSITION. AMERICA GIVES ITS PEOPLE THE RIGHT TO SPEAK BUT WITH EVERY RIGHT UNDER THE US CONSTITUTION, IT IS NOT ABSOLUTE. WE STILL MUST OBEY THE LAWS REGARDLESS OF OUR AGES.

THE SECOND IRONY IS THAT THE SAME GROUP THAT PROTESTS CALLING OUR GOVERNMENT WAR MONGERS AND WEAPON PRODUCING MACHINES, IS THE SAME GROUP BEING PROTECTED BY THOSE THEY PROTEST.

I am torn between freedom of speech and bringing an end to all this negativity.I find that it was probably poor judgement by the brother of this girl to bring her to an event that may cause trouble.I also support our police officers for doing a tough job that not many people want or truly understand. The country is losing it's morality and in general allowing too much violence to get created by bad news and sometimes wrong information.I don't believe in any website or article that stirs people to violence and promotes hatred, whether it is directed towards our country, children or anyone who is innocent and peaceful. The fact is we need to do something right now and maybe change some of the rules that were born in the "Bill of Rights".Censorship and profiling may be harsh in some ways, but it is our responsability to help stop our neighbors and fellow countrymen(wherever you may be from) from doing things that stir the fire even more.On a more angry note,i might even say that if you don't like this countries policies do something constructive to change them or get the f--k out. I don't agree with everything we do,but it is my country and i am proud of most things we stand for and accept them.To hell with all the pussies who go for martyrdom and blow up innocent people. The Palestinians have been given a bad rap for sure and something needs to be done, but not this terror. Also, any religion which feeds violence needs to go.I know of 3 or 4 such ones. One of the best sayings no matter where it came from is "let he who is without sin cast the first stone"! Once again, shackle or lock up anyone who breaks the law, overstays there visa's,or promotes violence. The law is the law until we change it and maybe we just need to even become more of a police state.Caning seems like a good idea also for small-time offenders. It works in other countries to curb bad behavior. Thanks for reading this even if it came out a little difficult.

I do not consider this to be child abuse. The girl should respect our men in uniform. Any one who takes a swing at officer should recieve some form of punishment. Hers was a little humility. How do we expect our young people to respect the law if they can do anything to show disrespect to them. This is not child abuse. Maybe may children should have this lesson and the world would not be in the shape it is in.

I see a lot of people here jumping to a lot of unfounded conclusions. I also see a lot of people here with an obvious anti-authority bias, who have demolished their own arguments with a lot of pointless deragatory remarks. This is a society, the society has rules, the police enforce those rules. If you don't like the rules then work to change them but you can't break them and expect not to be treated as a criminal.

The video shows nothing more than a girl being arrested, not abused, arrested. It doesn't show her taking a swing at the officer and it doesn't show her not taking a swing at the officer.

If she swung at the officer than the arrest is justified, if not then its not justified but there is no evidence here to show it one way or the other.

To the person asking where the age cutoff point is in arrests like this, I would answer that the cutoff point is not determined by age, it is determined by one's ability to differentiate right from wrong. I believe that unless this girl has very low IQ that she would know that taking a swing at an officer is wrong.

First, I know this family. My daughter went to school with this girl's older sister and played basketball with her. I have nothing against them. They seemed to be a very nice family (a bit puritanical, but nice.)

However, if she did take a swing at the cop, she needs to face the penalty. It's one of life's hard lessons. Her brother should also be charged. Protests are no place for children. Children do NOT have the mental capacity to understand what they are protesting. This is a very emotionally charged issue, and violence was inevitable. The brother being an adult should know better.

As far as the war goes, we MUST take out all these terroristic warlords and rout out all the evil people who give islam a bad name. I call on all muslims to clean their houses of these evil cowardly people who kill innocent women and children.

To all those in the US protesting our actions to secure our country and rout out evil: You are just as bad as the terrorists that kill babies by supporting them.

To the last commenter: what the fuck are you doing to "rout out terrorism" committed by your government? Not a damn thing, I imagine. You might have a daughter, but you need to grow up and figure out what the real world is like before you pass judgement on anyone else. And take a "swing" at a cop? Have you ever been on the receiving end of a metal nightstick wielded by a 6'2" body armor riot robot? Again, I'm guessing not so why don't you go back to your suburban womb and shut up.

Dear Jaime Blue,

The protestors had 2 hours to cross the bridge. After 2 hours they were only half way across the bridge. At that point the police asked the protestors to turn around and vacate the bridge. The protestors sat down instead. The spoiled 11 year old (as described by her father in the San Jose Mercury News) started yelling and tried to hit a police officer.

I'm an angry American. What right do these protestors have who support a terrorist organization to protest on a day that we observe and respect our war heros?

The spoiled child is one of seven children. What about being a good citizen of the world? What about zero population growth? The parents are Palestinians. Are they here legally? Is Los Gatos now their 'refugee camp'?

I hear nothing but lies coming from the Arabs. Nothing but lies coming from Arafat and the Palestians. And now more lies about a bratty 11 year old.

Does she know anything about Black September? Does she know anything about the Munich Olympics? Does she know anything about Arafat killing US Ambassador J. Curtis Moore? Does she know anything about the 1968 El Al hijacking or the Swissair and TWA hijackings in 1970? What about the Pan Am hijacking?

If Israel goes back to the 1967 borders will Arafat then go after the Jordanians and Egyptians as he did in 1960? After all the West Bank and Gaza Strip were NEVER a Palastinian nation.

Nothing for terrorists!

For 'Middle Eastern' guests in this county.

Our police put their lives on the line every day for our safety. If anyone lays a hand on an officer that is considered a felony.

This 'spoiled child' as her own father describes her, took a swing at an officer. It doesn't matter if she's 11 years old or 111. She committed a felony.

At least she won't get beheaded like she would in Saudi Arabia. And at least she can attend school and walk around town without a male escort unlike most Arab countries.

She needs to respect our laws.

I am born in the USA.. Grew up in Chicago and now living in Kentucky, just became Muslim. For the USA people. We have the USA Constitution declaring free speech, the right to practice religion. Tell me, whats the difference of a child being in a peaceful protest or in a crowd watching a parade or Mardi-Gras going by? Either way, the child has the right as much as adults to participate to practice her faith as much as a Christian or a Jew child does. A Muslim does not make one a terrorist just as the IRA does not make a Catholic a terrorist. Or a German a Nazi. It is just that the perceptive of Islam..which is a VERY peaceful religion and people has NOTHING to do with MILITANTS such as Bin Laden. Because of Bin Laden coming from a Muslim country and background does not mean that Bin Laden follows the dictates of Islam just as your Christians do not follow the dictates of the Book in abusing women or children, or whatever. 90% of Muslim follow the laws of Islam peacefully. You people should look at MILITANTS as the evil-doers...not Muslim USA. Remember that just over 150 years ago the North fought the South over the issue of slavery and freed them. It is interesting to see blacks still be treated as slaves still. What's wrong in being a Muslim..it is just a faith, nothing more. Like what's wrong with being a Baptist or a Jehovah's Witness, for example? I am proud to be a Muslim, and practicing its peaceful tenets. Remember the US Constitution. Free Speech, Free to practice religion, Free to pursue the statue of LIBERTY.

What to do if you're stopped by The Police

To fight police abuse effectively you need to know your rights. There are some things you should do, some things you must do and some things you cannot do. If you are in the middle of a police encounter, you need a handy and quick reference to remind you what your rights and obligations are.

That's why the ACLU is making these tips available as a downloadable .pdf file. You can photocopy this and carry it in your wallet, pocket or glove compartment to give you quick access to your rights and obligations concerning police encounters.

"ACLU "Bustcard": Pocket Guidelines on Encounters with the Police

Complete instructions for printing the bustcard, and other resources on police reform are also availalble.

Be polite and respectful. Never bad-mouth a police officer.

Stay calm and in control of your words, body language and emotions.

Don't get into an argument with the police.

Remember, anything you say or do can be used against you.

Keep your hands where the police can see them.

Don't run. Don't touch any police officer.

Don't resist even if you believe you are innocent.

Don't complain on the scene or tell the police they're wrong or that you're going to file a complaint.

Do not make any statements regarding the incident. Ask for a lawyer immediately upon your arrest.

Remember officers' badge & patrol car numbers.

Write down everything you remember ASAP.

Try to find witnesses & their names & phone numbers.

If you are injured, take photographs of the injuries as soon as possible, but make sure you seek medical attention first.

If you feel your rights have been violated, file a written complaint with police department's internal affairs division or civilian complaint board.

KEEP THIS CARD HANDY!
IF YOU HAVE A POLICE ENCOUNTER, YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF.

1. What you say to the police is always important. What you say can be used against you, and it can give the police an excuse to arrest you, especially if you bad-mouth a police officer.

2. You don't have to answer a police officer's questions, but you must show your driver's license and registration when stopped in a car. In other situations, you can't legally be arrested for refusing to identify yourself to a police officer.

3. You don't have to consent to any search of yourself, your car or your house. If you DO consent to a search, it can affect you, rights later in court. If the police say they have a search warrant,ASK TO SEE IT.

4. Do not interfere with, or obstruct the police -- you can be arrested for it.

IF YOU ARE STOPPED FOR QUESTIONING

1. It's not a crime to refuse to answer questions, but refusing to answer can make the police suspicious about you. You can't be arrested merely for refusing to identify yourself on the street.

2. Police may "pat-down" your clothing if they suspect a concealed weapon. Don't physically resist, but make it clear that you don't consent to any further search.

3. Ask if you are under arrest. If you are, you have a right to know why.

4. Don't bad-mouth the police officer or run away, even if you believe what is happening is unreasonable. That could lead to your arrest.

IF YOU'RE STOPPED IN YOUR CAR

1. Upon request, show them your driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance. In certain cases, your car can be searched without a warrant as long as the police have probable cause. To protect yourself later, you should make it clear that you do not consent to a search. It is not lawful for police to arrest you simply for refusing to consent to a search.

2. If you're given a ticket, you should sign it; otherwise you can be arrested. You can always fight the case in court later.

3. If you're suspected of drunk driving (DWI) and refuse to take a blood, urine or breath test, your driver's license may be suspended.

IF YOU'RE ARRESTED OR TAKEN TO A POLICE STATION

1. You have the right to remain silent and to talk to a lawyer before you talk to the police. Tell the police nothing except your name and address. Don't give any explanations, excuses or stories. You can make your defense later, in court, based on what you and your lawyer decide is best.

2. Ask to see a lawyer immediately. If you can't pay for a lawyer, you have a right to a free one, and should ask the police how the lawyer can be contacted. Don't say anything without a lawyer.

3. Within a reasonable time after your arrest, or booking, you have the right to make a local phone call: to a lawyer, bail bondsman, a relative or any other person. The police may not listen to the call to the lawyer.

4. Sometimes you can be released without bail, or have bail lowered. Have your lawyer ask the judge about this possibility. You must be taken before the judge on the next court day after arrest.

5. Do not make any decisions in your case until you have talked with a lawyer.

IN YOUR HOME

1. If the police knock and ask to enter your home, you don't have to admit them unless they have a warrant signed by a judge.

2. However, in some emergency situations (like when a person is screaming for help inside, or when the police are chasing someone) officers are allowed to enter and search your home without a warrant.

3. If you are arrested, the police can search you and the area close by. If you are in a building, "close by" usually means just the room you are in.

We all recognize the need for effective law enforcement, but we should also understand our own rights and responsibilities -- especially in our relationships with the police. Everyone, including minors, has the right to courteous and respectful police treatment.

If your rights are violated, don't try to deal with the situation at the scene. You can discuss the matter with an attorney afterwards, or file a complaint with the Internal Affairs or Civilian Complaint Board.

Of course, this is all well and good, ASSUMING that the police are obeying their own rules of conduct. Once that is no longer the case, sorry. All bets are off.
Gee, they are charging the crowd with their batons now, so I think I will just stand here in place like it says here on my trusty pocket reference and ask for my lawyer. 12 armored robo-cops yanking an 11 year old to the ground and jamming a 200 pound knee into her back is wrong even if you can't bear to accept people protesting your government. You self-righteous, racist, I-got-mine, selfish, black and white issue, ignorant, polluted, cubicle working, servile cattle.
by k
I had previously asked about where the cutoff should
be (in charging children), and why her brother should
be charged.

But because most, if not all of the responses to those
questions seemed to skirt around what I thought the
issue is, I'll ask it again.

I personally feel that, yes, if she indeed did hit the
officer, that there should be some sort of response to
that.

My point is that she was supposedly charged with a
*felony*! That is not teaching her a 'lesson'. That is
potentially seperating her from her family and sending
her off to a juvinile hall, etc. That is a very severe
charge. For those who believe she should be
punished if she was guilty, do you really believe that
the potential punishment is warranted?? I'd really like
to think not, but it's becoming way too obvious where
most of the 'evil-doers' of the world reside.

As for her brother being charged, again, with a
*felony*, supposedly bringing her to this protest, how
can this charge be justified!? If you feel this charge is
warranted, on what legal grounds?

Do then then feel that a parent who brings their child to
a protest because either they couldn't find or afford
daycare, or because they wanted to share the
experience with their child should be seperated from
that child and placed in prison for years? That is what
would happen if the felony would stick. Is that really
what you feel?

As for the comment that 'violence was inevitable'...
exactly how did you come up with that? The only ones
who know that to be case are those who intend to
cause it, and in this case it appears to be those brave
souls wearing the badges.

Being convicted of a felony as a juvenile is really no big deal. As long as it isn't too bad, you're not going to spend a lot of time in juvie, and after you're 18, your records are sealed. I know several people who were convicted of felonies (grand theft auto, sales of narcotics) when they were juveniles, but now have their records sealed, they're not getting into trouble anymore, and it has never caused a problem for them.

That's what the juvenile system is for. Some kid does something dumb (like take a swing at a cop), and they are punished, with the understanding that a kid is a lot more likely to learn from their mistakes. Nowadays it's really one of the only progressive parts of the United States criminal justice system

So stop the moaning and groaning about how charging this girl with a felony will ruin her life. Even if she gets convicted of it (doubtful), it really isn't too big of a deal.
by 1
Good point. However, a friend of mine had a brother who was arrested for breaking and entering. He was under 18, and was found guilty.

Well, he served his time, graduated from high school, and tried to enlist in the US Air force.

Because of his juvinille record, he was kept out.

He was however able to get into the Navy.

So although juvinille records are sealed, sometimes, they can screw you up.

F.B.I. Given Broad Authority to Monitor the Public
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Council on American-Islamic Relation (CAIR)

Filed at 3:33 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Attorney General John Ashcroft on Thursday gave the FBI broad new authority to monitor Internet sites, libraries, churches and political organizations, calling restrictions on domestic spying ``a competitive advantage for terrorists.''

Ashcroft, joined at a news conference by FBI Director Robert Mueller, claimed the bureau's agents had been hampered by a range of bureaucratic restrictions. Under present guidelines, Ashcroft said, agents ``cannot surf the Web, the way you and I can,'' and cannot simply walk into public events to observe people and activities.

Okay, so you think that a felony charge for a child is no
big deal, that as long as they watch their Ps and Qs
things will be okay in the long run, and the time they
will have to spend in juvy will be short as long as
the charge wasn't too bad.

What about the other charge in question, the felony
child endangerment charge against a legal adult?
by CAIR is a terrorist orgonization
Mr. Anwar:

Bis-millah her-rahma nir-raheem.

You asked for it.

Item 1
You will have to be patient. This is a long one. I will read your response as long as you don’t give me BS of your prophet Mohammed and Quran. I want to see Muslims’ action. Action of last couple of centuries, their contribution for the betterment of mankind, because I am condemning thinking capability, mentality and action of PRESENT day’s Muslim.

Item 2
Please read this email twice, think before you answer. I have put item numbers for your convenient. Keep in mind that I am talking about 90% of Muslim population of the world. 5% are probably reasonable Muslim. Another important thing for you to know is that I don’t buy what Muslims say in front of the camera but what is in their mind and their act.

Item 3
There is a difference between American Muslims and Muslims living in the US with US citizenship or otherwise. The former is less than 10% of the total US Muslim population and the later is 90%. It is very clear that you belong to the later group. I have read and saved several of your emails in our mail server that you sent to your buddies.

Item 4
An American holds US interest first.
Muslims in the US hold Islamic country's interest first.

Item 5
“You wrote: Having a difference of opinion is part of our constitutional right and
part of any civilized society.”
That is exactly what those 19 Muslim suicide bombers used. They used the openness of our civilized society. They used our trust. They used our kindness. They learned how to use our system. They used our tolerance. They learned how to fly our planes in our schools because we did not suspect them. Now Muslims in the US can never fool us with those words “constitutional rights”, “civilized society”, “we condemn 911 act but….”, “Islam is a peaceful religion” and so on. There is no constitutional right without security. Those days are over for Muslims. That is why we passed so many anti-terrorist laws in the recent days, backed by popular support for it.

Item 6
For you information:
If congress declare emergency then President can suspend the constitution. FEMA takes over. They can pull out anyone from their home and shoot him/her on the street in front of everybody-no question ask. We are not there yet. If you do not believe this go check it out with a legal expert.

Item 7
911 was a wakeup call for us. But what is more alarming is the world wide Muslims’ sympathy for terrorist and reaction against Mr. Bushes policy on war against terrorism starting from Afghanistan. It is very clear to informed Americans, media, and our government that 80% to 90% Muslims of the world, including the one lives in the US, and/or Europe wants to see destruction of the western civilization, if they had their way.

Item 8
Following facts are not public knowledge:
a) 43% Kuwaiti considers Osama as their hero. Only 35% thinks otherwise.
b) 83% Muslims in Pakistan wanted to see Taliban win.
c) 80% Muslims of the world wanted to see Saddam win in the Gulf war.
d) 80% Muslims of the world favored banning of Salaman Rushdie book.
e) 75% Muslims were for his (Mr. Rushdie) death sentence.
f) 90% of Americans favors Mr. Bushes decision on war on terrorism and starting that from Afghanistan whereas 90% Muslims in the US are against it.
g) Previous sanctions against Pakistan and Iraq.
h) Only 15% Americans think Muslims are favorable to terrorist’s cause (Philistine issue, US troops in Saudi Arabia, and sanction against Afghanistan). (You are lucky.)
i) 80% Egyptians believe WTC-911 attack was carried by Jews and that over 4,000 jews did not show up for work on that day.

Item 9
Its simply doesn’t matter where you live, US, UK, Holland, Australia. What matters is whether you are a Muslim or not. You have declared the West as your country of convenience for material gains. After screwing up 50 or so Islamic country’s system now you folks have infested the West. If Islamic laws were so good then why don’t you just implement that in one of your Islamic country and show us how great the result is. I don’t buy what you think Quran says. I go buy your action. Quran is interpreted hundred different ways by hundred different group. Therefore, it has no value whatsoever. Show me Muslims action.

Item 10
I know, that you know, most Americans are not very politically informed. That is a good news for you. American people’s ignorance of Muslims hidden agenda is keeping you alive here. If they had known above (a) through (i) facts then Muslims would be in deep trouble in the US. However, for your information, our government is now aware of this. Our government is not advertising above facts to save Muslims life from massive scale public backlash.

Item 11
Hundreds of school in Saudi Arabia, thousands of Madrassas in Pakistan, hundreds of Mosques in the US and Europe, dozens of charity fund raising front, are churning out tens of millions of Walking-Talking-NonThinking-West-Hating-Parasitic-Islamic-Terrorist-Robots.

Thanks god, now US government knows about it.

Item 12
Food for your thought:

Any action US takes for its own interest that goes against an Islamic country you and people like you are against it. American population overwhelmingly supports each of the following. Notice: I did not list Vietnam War because Vietnam War did not have public support. I am comparing the things that are supported by American public versus Muslims.

War on Afghanistan.
War on Iraq.
Closing BCCI (Bank for Crook and Criminals Incorporated)
Freezing of account of Holy Land Foundation (Recent development)
Supporting of Salaman Rushdie’s right to write his thought.
Attacking Lybia in 86.
US attempt to rescue its hostages from Iran.

This list can go on forever.

Item 13
If you replace our president, Mr. Bush, with any other US president then our president would still be taking similar actions. And Muslims won’t approve it. Muslims in the US. Europe, world, CAIR, ISNA, and dozen more organization will again be against it. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to determine that Muslims interest is in sharp conflict with American interest. Do you think American government doesn’t realize this? They do now.

Item 14
People with more or less similar interest, culture, ambition, and ideology, live and thrive together. You should leave this country and find one that matches your interest. I guess, it is too painful for you to give up your worldly things. Look at Osama, a multi-millionaire, choose to live a very simple life. Isn’t that what prophet Mohammad taught you? You should go to Afghanistan to fight for Taliban. Look, thousands of Pakistani is fighting with Taliban. But you are too greedy to give up all the luxury the West has to offer. I am sure you can come up with some excuse for not moving to back to an Islamic country. At least Osama stood for what he believes in. If you do not believe in Osama philosophy then at least you can go to one of those Islamic country and make that a better place. Can you?

Item 15 (CAIR web site)
Billy Graham’s son, Franklin Graham: openly declared that “Islam is a wicked religion and Muslims are evil people”

Item 16 (AMA web site)
A prominent national Islamic advocacy group today called on Rabbi Marvin Hier to clarify his accusation that the Quran, Islam's revealed text, holds "extremist" views.

Item 17 (ISNA web site)
In a joint statement issued today, the American Muslim Alliance (AMA), American Muslim Council (AMC), Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), Muslim American Society (MAS), Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), and Muslim Student Association of USA and Canada, and CEO of Holy Land Foundation said: “He [Mr. Bush} has a lot to answer to Islamic community.”

Item 18
To keep your status quo, your family and friend’s consent, approval, your sense of right and wrong has surrendered in front of the masses. You can’t rise up and say anything against them. Do you have the guts to disagree with the Muslim organizations listed in item 15. You will loose your social acceptance.

Item 19
Do you want me to probe deeper in your brain? I am an insider. I can expose Islam and Muslims to the masses like no one else can. I know all about Islamic brain. I know genetic code of Muslim. I know every neuron of Muslim, their blood cells, their breathing. Muslims are completely rotten beyond repair, 90% of the Muslims have lost the soul with which one distinguishes between right and wrong. 21st century will be a very sad and dark century for Muslims. Go think, cry, and ask for forgiveness in solitude. God may forgive you.

Item 20
Have you ever thought why Japanese do not hate the US as much as Muslims do? What about German? How come Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, S. Korea, Japan, France, Holland, UK, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Belgium,…….…and even Russia are with the US in the war against terrorism and on Afghanistan? But you and 90% Muslim population have to be against it. Why? Why? Are all these countries are idiots? These countries produce 80% of the world-GDP. 16% of the world population (Muslims, 50 or so Islamic countries) produce less than 4% of world GDP. There is another name for those people who like to live on others hard work. It is called parasite.

Item 21
I tell you why.
Because this is a war between civilizations, between haves and haves-not, between competent and incompetents, between 7th century (Islam) and 21st century, between optimists and pessimists, between losers and winners, between social and anti-social, between science-and-technology and Stone Age. That is the only way you can group the countries in the world who are with the US and who are with you and your Islamic ideology.

Item 22
Think, seriously.
If I know these, then do you think our government doesn’t know this? I would agree with you though that general Americans are ignorant of international politics and therefore, are not aware of Islamic agenda.

Item 23
I assure you that our government is now convinced that Muslims are the number one enemy of the West. Not only because 911 but for the sympathy toward the terrorist cause.

Item 24
Mr. Bush’s approval rating is 90% but 90% Muslims are against his foreign policy. That’s clearly tell us Muslims interest and American interest are two different things. Islam is more than a religion, it spans over politics, economics, power, way of living etc. and against US interest, therefore, Islam should be declared non-religion and then ban it in the US.

Who are these people?

A large group of people on the surface of Earth contributes very little to nothing to the welfare of human race. This group of people has invented no medicine of significant importance in the last several hundred years. Modern medicines have saved hundreds of millions of life in the last hundred years. Who are these people?

A large group of people on the surface of Earth contributes very little to nothing to the welfare of human race. This group of people has invented no medicine of significant importance in the last several hundred years. Modern medicines have saved hundreds of millions of life in the last hundred years. Nice to see the level of reasoned debate coming from the supporters of America's and Israel's War on (Some) Terrorism. All people should see how great these arguments are. They'd really see then who the civilized people are.

I did not skirt the issue. I answered very plainly where I believe the cutoff point is. I did not debate you on the child endangerment charge because I do not disagree with you. I engaged you on a point that I disagreed with you on and one that I saw as being central to your argument. As for the penalty, that has not been decided yet nor has a conviction been made so I see little to debate on that front. The court will decide the punishment.
by Mark Ehly
Well I believe if anyone takes a swing at a cop needs to be dealt with. In the heat of things you stop the threat and then deal with it. Just in the pictures she does appear older than 11. Could be 16 or 17. Wake up you freaks this is the real world. How often do we hear of young kids involved in violent crimes? Again they took fast action and stopped the threat. It does not matter if she was 18 or 11 she took a swing at a uniformed Officer. And by the way she does not look like she was beat. They could have placed face down on the sidewalk or pavement. I am sure had she kept her mouth shut and not taken a swing she would have been home in time to do what ever 11 year old protesters do in there spare time.

The main terrorist are the fascists mole police state cops and their related organizations like the riders in oakland rampart in la and many others in the police around te usa and of corse the paramilitary death squads around the world paid for by the rober baron oil companies

I saw what happened was not in the protest though just a tourist on the bridge the protest was peaceful no banners on the bridge the protesters stayed on the side walk the cops stopped the protest at 1:35 the cops blocked the sidewalk the cops stopped the traffic on the bridge so the could get their buses in to take off the courageous protesters that where abused by the chpig fascists
The little girl I saw arrested after the protest near that little parking lot by the bridge walk way about 50 yds from the bridge at about 1:59 the courageous little girl did not assault the chpig the chpigs where pushing the people with sticks she said stop pushing me an the chpigs attacked her after the chpigs tied the little girl up and tossed her to the ground one chpig fatass kneeled on her and grabbed her ass I took a photo of this
if courageous people like the 11 yr old don’t protest the fascist practices of our dictator bush over in other peoples countries more terrorist will be willing to come over here and kill the people that support their oppressors

With regard to the arrest of the 11 year old demonstrator:
Having read the majority of the comments made so far it does not surprise me at all that you have such racist and thuggish tactics used by your so called democratic police force. No doubt there were "jewish elements in the police force at the time! This would not have happened to a jewish kid!! The police use special traffic control tactics to slow it down deliberately and then blame it on the demonstrators!!
America is no longer a true democracy. It is a dictatorship ruled by a 2% minority of fascists out to rule our world. The September 11 was carried out by your own homegrown variety of Zionists and of course Arab Muslims get the blame. It is time America opened its eyes and grew up. You are so blind to what is really happening and it is you who are selfish, self serving, stupid, ignorant and YOU ARE THE LOSERS! Your so called democracy represents the ugly face of fascism and a form of zionist dictatorship(Right and Left- communism created by Jews) with no freedom of speech whatsoever. No doubt many of the commentators are that way inclined! Your racist and juvenile comments just show people for what you really stand for: total control. Your are really a nation of thugs, bullies and murderers all done in the so called name of Democracy- even your ignorant, corrupt and dumb president was not honestly elected. And to top it all your corrupt government ensures dictatorships in other foreign countries thrive in order to fulfill its nasty zionist agenda.
So save the crap- not everyone is fooled by your racist and ignorant opinions. The Zionists killed democracy on September 11th and our destroying the USA.
It takes courage and bravery to participate in a demo, to stand for what is just, and it is honest and honourable, something Zionist America is at present completely devoid of.!! May God bless the young girl and her family. She and her family could have taken legal action against the police but I forget justice no longer resides in American courts, only lies and trumped up charges!!

That all the people on this board scream that there's no evidence that Arabs were the terrorists that flew planes into the WTC, and that there needs to be more fact-finding and research into "whodunnit" - but after seeing an incomplete video of an arrest (you DON'T see what actually ocurrs with the girl, just the arrest), you are all ready to indict the entire CHP for police brutality, sexual harrassment, etc... Please - someone explain to me why the same scrutiny you demand of others does not apply to you?

It seems that the only way for this country to be liberated is to form an aliance with the gangs.

We need to join forces with the Cryps, Bloods, 8-ball posse, and the like to fight against this police state!

We must do this to achieve our goal

We tried passive resistance, and it failed. Drastic action must be taken!!!

I saw the video of the eleven year old girl being arrested, dragged, on the news. I was horrified.
I wrote a letter to the Gov. because I had heard that theywas chp officers. So far I haven't gotten a reply.
I'm enclosing my letter below, if anyone knows who better to send it to, let me know.

Thanks,
Wendy

(letter follows)
Dear Gov. Davis,
I just saw a video on the news of several chp officers beating and dragging an 11-year old girl who was demonstrating on the golden gate bridge, or at the approach, last weekend.
I feel this is totally unacceptable, and would like to know what your position is on this incident, and who else I can talk to to make my viewpoint heard. It looked like a scene from a police state. The chp position on the news was that there was provocation, but there were 3 or 4 officers all restraining and dragging this tiny girl, very horrifying.
I think these officers should lose their jobs, should not be in this kind of position of authority. A clear message should be sent to all the other officers that they can not get away jwith this kind of behavior.

Please let me know what is happening with this case, where you stand, and where I can find out more.

Ok, so beat up a kid, then arrest the brother. Hmmm, more like Nazi Germany, don't you think?
by filter
No, doesn't sound like Nazi Germany at all...

In Nazi Germany there wouldn't have even been a protest, and anyone even caught planning an act unsympathetic to the government would already be in jail or "Work Camps".

Had the protesters and organizers somehow eluded the secret police's attention, they would have been arrested the instant they approached the bridge. Anyone resisting arrest or attempting to attack a policeman would be lucky not to have been shot.

Read up on your history a little - that way you won't get caught making trendy knee-jerk comparisons in the future...

BTW - the closest thing to Nazism since WWII has come from the Left, which so to many on this site hold near and dear.
by an observer
It is saddening to know that the only argument you have to a blatant attack on the basic right to voice ones opinion is to call the 11 year old "stupid" and "ugly". Stupid is to make the assumption that a person who refuses to accept and blindly follow the norm is stupid. I would be "very amused" if you were able to provide an argument with any substance.

No, the closest thing since WWI would probably be Israel from 1967 to the present: shooting protestors, mass oppression, torture, detention without charges, and concentration camps.

I know you must savor the perverse irony of referring to Jews as Nazis, but I think you're way off base.

Jordanians have killed more Palestinians than Jews ever have: where's your rage at them?

I'm not jewish, nor do I have any great love for Israel - but the one-sided, narrow minded, idealogically flawed, terror-apologist crap that I see here is nonsense.

Go to Dachau or Bergen Belsen or Thereisienstadt, where MILLIONS were killed and then come back and tell me you think they're "just as bad as the Nazis"

You do your cause a disservice when you make such comparisons.

I entirely agree with filter . . . and as for modern day attrocities, well I suggest running a search for "Pol Pot" or "Khmer Rouge" if you really want to know just how different the Israeli Occupation is from true genocide.

Now, I ask all of you who took the time to look at these pictures, does this make you feel safe? Remember, you are all AMERICANS! We have freedom of speech. That does not imply that our speech has to be politicly correct, simply that we have the freedom of speech. If 100000000 peaple ralied to support Isreal would there be police arresting young girls? I think not. In fact im quite sure the little 11 year old girl would be interviewed and glorified for supporting these poor people, the Jews. Well its time you all wake up and see things for what they really are. How can you be free if your freedoms are based on what is accecpted by the general pulic. If that police officer were to do this to my daughter I would attempt to take him to court, if that failed I would kill him for taking such action against my helpless little girl. Thats right, I would kill him. It is time we stopped acting like the brainwashed idiots we have become and say STOP, this is wrong and I will no longer allow it. Untill then we will never be free.

Our neighborhood police have successfully been transformed into American Storm Troopers, jack-booted thugs armed to the teeth and backed by the full weight of power and authority of the political and legal systems, which enable and encourage their behavior.

We are now a nation of sheep, expected to be terrorized into obedience by our "protectors."

I shed no tears when I hear of a cop getting killed.

What a fearful moment for a child! What a transforming moment for her and everyone who hears this story. Our country has lost its reason when a child can cause such fear. What a powerful testament to the right course she decided to take. Our country was built on the resistence to oppression how ironic that now our country is so fearful of anything that resembles our glory days. I hope this young girl has become more resolved to fight and stand up for her belifes. And I pray she finds power in the company of other like minded indivduals. It sure was. The time for neutrality by the U.S. regarding affairs in the mid-East is WAY OVERDUE. However, that is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future given the self-serving political whores in D.C. are firmly under the thumb of AIPAC - American-Israeli Political Action Committee. It is far more important for these whores in Washington to get re-elected than to do what's right - adopt a neutral policy in the mid-East - and to take care of the Fed/Gov's #1 priority and that's to ensure the safety and security of all U.S. citizens here in America. I guess if I could see, read, or otherwise find some proof that this was an 11-year-old girl (photos both here and at the strongly anti-Jewish "La Voz de Aztlan" are not clear enough and a search of Lexis-Nexis revealed nothing (but that's because of the Zionist media conspiracy, I'm sure..heheh) I'm gonna have to pass on this one. If you have any proof, like police reports, a mug shot, another independent witness something other than a long range shot of what appears to be a young adolescent or early 20s female in trouble with the law, you're sure not gaining any sympathizers and only preaching to the proverbial choir.
by cpo
You are doubting that the girl was 11? You need major media proof? It was all over the major media, incidentally.
and also incidentally, the Voz de Aztlan is run by two wealthy engineer nuts who hang out in their basement. Almost every left group that has heard of them has strongly disavowed any connection.
Here are major media stories that involve the girl's teacher, her father etc. She's in 5th grade. do you need a birth certificate? One has a quickfilm of the story played on TV

It is a sorry day for Americans when a peaceful demonstration is disrupted. I would expect this in Florida but not in California.
If we are acting on the principles that disruption of free speech and protest is a bad thing then we should hear a chorus of indignation at GUPS malicious disruption of Jewish students' rally at SFSU. The attempted riot and threats to the lives of Jews, was preceeded by the infamous blood libel poster alleging that Palestinians were being killed "according to Jewish rites." The mob that demanded and succeeded in ending the rally early included assertions that "Hitler should have finished the job" threats of violence and challenges to fight. This disruption of Jewish students' expression is impermissible and should be condemned with at least equal vehemence by all on this site.
by David Faubion (davidfaubion [at] ivwnet.com)
Which 'side' used the child as a pawn? The oppression/conflict in Palestine is simple
enough for a seven year old (not brainwashed/dead by TV., et al) to understand. From her heart and mind, she wanted to be in that protest. Really, the cops used that child as a pawn, the pawn of state sponsored terrorism. All the violence by law enforcement on the people comes down from the executive branch. The U.S. President could stop all of it with one signature. That is not in the best interest of the empire's current regime. On the contrary, the empire thrives by keeping the people emotionally griped with fear, hate, loathing, hopelessness, et al negativity. Perusing through these posts proves the effectiveness of the empire's terror. The issue is not about ideologies. It is purely about violence as the means by the elite minority to take from the majority, who largely have invested all their power in a powerless consumer culture of ignorance, deception, and apathetic numbness. <P>That girl and her brother seem to also to be Semitic, likely of the 'Arabic gene droplet' variety to have been such an lucrative target for the cops.
<p> If all of that absurd brutality looks macabre and psychotic be not aghast. It is just that because the line between play-acting and reality is non-existent when violence is involved? Solders are violent psychopaths. Having realized that, the martial artist seeks to avoid initiating conflict at all costs.<p> To deny that child's impulse and will to participate would be a stifling of creativity. At such an age, that lose would be dear to her creative development. Yes, she should be forewarned of the dangers, and it is likely that she did.<p>

Yes you are correct they SHOULD condemn anti-semitism with the same ferociousness they do all other forms of racism. But they won't and they'll claim anyone pointing out this hypocrasy is a reactionary, pro-zionist trying to fuck up their cause. Even the ISO admitted in this weeks issue of The NAtion that they have had anti-semetic speakers before. The lefties won't address this because it would mean having to face up to their double standards and hypocrasies and they are neither morally or intellectually stroing enough to do so. The will try to brush it under the rug or else claim it is the jews themselves committing hate crimes to divert attention away from the Palestinian cause, as one un-enlightened lefty on NY IMC put it. Shame on the lefties, they have now stooped to a level of scapegoating and promoting racial hatred that by passes even the far right.

Yes, those zany leftists that condemn Isreal for killing Palestinians and seizing their lands. We should round them all up, fence them into little territories, prevent them from going to market, then start sniping at them and prevent ambulances from getting into their areas. Then, we should call them terrorists and just finnish them off. This will help us feel better about ourselves and help us to get over that dreadful "holocaust."

I've been to many protests in France and the police there help to make them a success. I created a video "mosaic" about a recent demonstration in Paris, France for the occasion of George W. Bush's trip to France.

Watch the video here: http://www.thedubyareport.com/media.html

This is an interactive video "mosaic." Click on any one of the mini-videos (tiles) and it will expand into a full size video... or at least as full size as a video can get on the internet. When watching a full size video, you can return to the original video mosaic by clicking on the arrow at the bottom left of the screen.

This is extremly dangerous, who do these petty cops think they are. The should just stick to handing out tickets. The Governor of the State needs to be questions about this abuse by the the California Hwy Patrol. They have abused so many. What's next.

If we don't stop it now, it will only get worse.

You are presuming guilt (on the part of the CHP) before a trial. Don't you believe that due process, equal protection under the law, and a presumption of innocence is guaranteed to all citizens and not just protesters? Are not the people who comprise the CHP also entitled to the same rights and protections as you?

I believe the father was going to file a civil suit against the CHP -- any word on how that is going?
by Amy Louise Lane. (loobylane [at] democrat.com)
This is absolutely sick. All you people in San Francisco searching for something to fight for need look no further. Whose rights are more inviolable than those of the child? This issue will not go away. It is time for action, time to stop 'police' brutality, time to protect innocents the world over. NOW is the time to make your stand for all that made America great. NOW is the time to protect the citizens of tomorrow and NOW is the time for public reform. Making sure that the officials protect ALL Americans, whatever their age, race, political affiliations, beliefs or gender.
It is you that can make the change. Stand with us to ensure that this never happens again.

since when did a single website become holy scripture for all Muslims? thats just one guy's interpretation. What you are saying is akin to saying that just because a single Christian preacher exhorts his flock to violence or hatred, as happened during say the Crusades or within Nazi Germany or for the glory of the British Empire, that that one single bigot represents all Christians. That is stereotyping and it is illogical. If a green haired man steals my bike, then all green haired men are thieves - that is the fallacy of stereotyping.

After Bridge Protest, cops go crazy and attack child
by A • Saturday May 25, 2002 at 09:36 PM

After the Take It To The Bridge Protest on May 25th, police attacked an eleven year old girl named Sophia, throwing her on the ground and binding her arms together. She was left face down on the ground for over five minutes before they took her away. After all that, they then had the nerve to arrest her older brother Musa for bringing her to the protest. Are the Presidio Park Police so messed up that they must beat up children to feel good about themselves. San Franciscans should be outraged!

Child Endangerment?
by Meria Heller • Sunday May 26, 2002 at 09:40 AM
Meria [at] Meria.net 602-404-7556

The other side of the story
by Devil's advocate • Sunday May 26, 2002 at 10:08 AM

The only danger she was in was from the pigs....
by Jesse • Sunday May 26, 2002 at 10:13 AM

You can make your own decision.

davecampbell [at] igc.org

It's so easy to ridicule "lefties" when you're another unquestioning clone....or just one of those people who aren't satisfied with the corporate state ownership of all the mainstream media and feel the need to harass in the few outlets left for alternative points of view.

what the f**** !? what is that about the city/ police "letting" us walk the bridge when it could be bombed? bombings don't seem to be the concern every other day when they bring in the bridge tolls and tourists $. and for many of us, well i'll speak for myself, i'd rather die in an imperfect world than have someone tell me i can't walk somewhere just because they have the power in this police state to regulate my body and actions. i don't think so. if they cared so much about "terrorists" and our safety they wouldn't have terrorized us and a peaceful demonstration of the our freedom of speech. the u.s. was founded on terrorism and cops are trained to be terrorists for the state.

Children who protest are not pawns - are you?
by Jan Gilbrecht • Sunday May 26, 2002 at 08:43 PM
jan_gilbrecht [at] hotmail.com

I'm sorry about what happened, and I know it's easy to blame those operating outside the law, but please, take these words from a first hand witness of the day's events into consideration.

loss of life

crowswings [at] juno.com

let me respond respectfully to your message...
one of the reasons anti-war demonstrators were there, is to oppose needless loss of life... and this was a consideration when none of the demonstrators, to my knowledge, stepped in to lanes of traffic... the police blocked only one lane originally... and when the police stopped the march near the marin side of the bridge, no one that committed civil disobedience, to my knowledge, did so by obstucting traffic... to my knowledge, traffic was completely obstructed only when the police blocked all marin-bound traffic in order to TURN AROUND a city bus in which the arrestees were being held to take them to the san francisco side... at the san francisco side, the arrestees were held in the bus and then returned to the marin side...
in other words, the blocking of traffic was unnecessary, since the arrestees were to be processed in marin county due to the location of the arrests...
traffic on the bridge from marin toward stanford was minimally affected...
in-city traffic was effected was apparently effected but, whether this was caused by the demonstrators or by the overzealous response of law enforcement, is unclear at best...
i am very saddened by your loss, and although i do not believe that the demonstrators are responsible, as you claim, i would still like to offer my condolences, and accept that your anger is directed at those that you perceive to be responsible...

Just like it must mean that all blacks are gang members and all mexicans are illegal aliens, and all arabs are terrorists, and all whites are racists and so on and so on.

Maybe they are US citizens, maybe not - but it would be interesting to see what would happen if an anti-government protest was organized in Syria or Egypt or Iraq or Palestine, or just about ANY Middle Eastern nation...

at least all the middle eastern countries do not claim to be "free-speech" countires.

Maybe, just maybe, there are some within the Police agency, who abhor such nasty and illegal conduct....!

a girl's courage calls for more
by Ted Bagg • Tuesday May 28, 2002 at 05:32 PM
tbagg [at] minn.net

Police arrest 30 as anti-war activists block bridge Golden Gate span protest snarls traffi
by Sean Holstege, Oakland Tribune • Tuesday May 28, 2002 at 08:50 PM

The Main Problem in the Middle East
by Jihad Renee Albanee • Tuesday May 28, 2002 at 09:39 PM

Stuff and Nonsense!
by 5th Generation Californian • Wednesday May 29, 2002 at 07:27 AM

No thanks, send 'em home.

by Tracy • Wednesday May 29, 2002 at 07:31 AM

I feel the same way about this as you do. if they don't like the way we do things here in "OUR" Country, GO HOME! The girl should have never been there in the first place. Yes, we do have a freedom of speech but who wants to hear them standing up for the idiots in their own Country? Go home! We don't want you people here. All you do is cause us American's trouble and grief. For God's sake, your protesting to stop what's going on over there, but what are we supposed to do to your people for what they did to ours? leave them alone? Like hell! They are getting what they deserve. Actually, what they've had coming to them all along. It's about time that's all!

Hi,

Please take the time and read this article! This goes out to all the dum cops. I think that the police did the wrong thing beacuse shes a little girl and dosen't understand and already she has hang cufs on her. They realized that they made a mistake took her brother to jail. If i was the mom of that child i would sew the police department so bad that they would see the last of there paychecks. So, now the question really is why do people hate them so much? Of course everybody knows that answer. I only want to say couple of things. First is that, police think that they have power over everybody but, they are just the same poeple as everybody else. Just take them out of there uniforms and they will be the same. Second is that sometimes they stop, for no reason. Or maybe theire boss expects they to catch this amount of people, but if the police didn't have enough tickets, they stop for every little reasons. Yeah...they get paid really good, because all the cars they stop and then they ask there selves why are we so fat and always eat donuts? Well, the problem is that all the people that pay there tickets, they go to the paycheck of some cop that thinks he did the right thing. I'm not saying that all the police is like that. But sooner or later everybody will have to face GOD and GOD sees the the truth, there is no way of escaping.

To all cops and people!
by Stupid cops dont know what to call them!

stupid ass cops they think they have the power, yeah right. if all the people went against cops then they would all be sitting on walfers. Yeah.......right free country. It's just what they say. Im from a different country but when my family was leaving to america they said its free it's better then here and everything like that. But when i came here i regreted it. If only the the country was free then we couldn't have to be living like this. All the time not sleeping at night worried about paying ur ticket or going to court. If only Clinton wouldn't have hireid so much police then we would have to suffer this much. On time i just wanna to hit a cop out so bad so he wouldn't remember who he is. Oh you all now the cop that was shot in the face right? Right so, this is a sight of how much the people are getting tired of all the bowl shit. If i was a presidn't it would be a whole new world.

Hate all the jack asses!

Psyco-cop Doug Schaffler of the Richmond Heights, Missouri in June of 2001 fired 5 shots at point blank range into my daughter's Golden Lab as she looked on being restrained by neighbors. His reason? He thought his life was in danger! In danger from an overweight, nuetered, thought he was a lap dog Golden Lab?
My daughter is 30 something and does not have children. The dog, named Murphy, was her baby.
It'll 2 years this May. My daughter is still being treated for post trauma stress syndrome. She has not been able to hold a job since.
What happened to psyco-cop Schaffler? They made him a sargent the next year.
You can express your outrage to: http://www.richmondheights.org. If you do be asured that we are most grateful for any support you might lend.

u guys are really weird.. serious.. y are u all hating police? my aunt and uncle are both cops. and they do a fine job. they are happily married to eachother with lovely daughters whom they love. they would never assault when it is not necessary.. now, i wasnt there, but it is unfair to lable all cops as pigs. do you even realize how much cops risk their lives to help others everyday. im sure that out there, there are police men and women who are not properly trained for this job and abuse their high authority. but it is defenetly not fair to label all of the men and women police officers as pigs.
by M. Taylor (Astro*#*#*Afric@opton*#*#*line.net)
Sorry if this is a lengthy post. But it's to counter some of the subliterate ranting.

I am writing from the NYC area. I was here on 9/11, and I saw the smoke from the burning buildings. I saw the sky darker than I have seen it in years, as malls, skyscrapers, and other buildings went dark. I watched the glow from the fire for that first day, and on Thursday the wind shifted and the smell of corpses and vaporized brick and wood wafted up the Hudson for twenty or thirty miles. I know people who lost a best friend, a son, a co-worker. Three weeks before I had been up on the observation deck of the South Tower and been astounded by their scale, the view, the polyglot flow of visitors.

I can tell you that, having been there that day, I would never, ever support a movement which I thought would encourage the repeat of such acts, and which I thought would glorify the individuals who carried out the acts. Absloutely not, no way Jose. And that is why I want to see Bush, Rove, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft and the rest of them voted out of the picture as fast as possible, punished and exposed for the fanatical, Machiavellian madmen that they are.

Many people say that peace protestors are cowards. That peace protestors have forgotten what happened on that day. That peace protestors support those who did this act and want to roll over and play dead so that it can be done again.

Peace protestors cannot uniformly be called cowards. Anyone who is willing to say such things (gee, maybe Bush is wrong) in this present climate is not a coward. Anyone who is willing to put their face on TV, knowing that their message will be peverted, their event or action dismissed, their very name dragged through the mud, they are not cowards. Anyone who is willing to criticise the shameful misuse of our courageous men and women in uniform to do things like invade Panama, Grenada, and Iraq, when at the same time Wal-mart sells Easter baskets filled with toy soldiers, they are not cowards. And a young girl who is angry enough to yell at, or strike, a policeman, is not a coward.

Did she deserve to be tied up and left lying in the grass? Jeeze Louise, she's not even twelve years old! My brother (a 12-year veteran of the New York State troopers) has told me stories of teenagers doing far worse things to him and getting away with it.

Did her brother deserve to be charged with "felony endangerment?" Is it "felony endangerment" to go to a march? No - what's the big deal about walking across a bridge carrying a t-shirt over your head and yelling? Is is "felony endangerment" to march across a known terrorist target? What about the people driving over said bridge, with infants in the car? Is it "felony endangerment" to walk across a bridge with dozens of police nipping at your heels, with snipers in the bushes, with irate drivers yelling at you? Perhaps, but is that the fault of the protestors? The police say they had two hours for the march and that time was exceeded. Perhaps more people came than were expected? And do they mean from when the first person steps on the bridge to when the first person steps off the bridge? or when the last person steps off the bridge? And if they exceed that time, is that just cause to snarl traffic and arrest people by the busload?

To dismiss this girl as a "little brat" who "deserves what she got" is the same kind of us/them, you're with us or you're against us, oversimplified nonsense which has become what passes for discourse in this country. If she had simply yelled at them, would she be a "brat?" What if she expressed similar opinions and was beaten in school? Or was chastisized by her teacher? Or censored if she wanted to read a poem on the subject at a school event? There are any number of cases of these and more happening and the kids in question being called "brats" or "brainwashed" or "dangerous" or "asocial" or far worse.

I don't think anyone who was alive that day, short of a lobotomy or massive stroke, will ever be able to forget. The difference is that some say we can prevent similar things from happening by attacking the places where we think they would originate. Others say that we can prevent further attacks by changing the way we treat the rest of the world. Basically, Both care about how the rest of the world sees us - one wants everybody else to be scared sh**less, the other wants the rest of the world to be our friend. Both can backfire. Perhaps bombs and bluster are easier in the short run, but in the long run they are more likely to backfire. Bombs are easy, as is engendering fear, and changing present policy is no easy task. but I would submit that to deeply, fundamentally alter our policy toward the rest of the world - not simply flipping the switches to the settings requested by everybody's favorite international terrorist organization - is the only sane, just, long-term solution.

Is marching and protesting part of that? Yes. Is resisting police abuses of power part of that? Yes. Is exposing illegal practices of interrogation and detention part of that? Yes. Do we need the police to do their duty of apprehending criminals and protecting the general welfare, Yes.

Protestors: Keep marching, keep reaching out (don't forget the suburbs!) keep it professional and powerful. Police officers: Remember that your fealty is to the Constitution, and not necessarily to any given governmental official. You have the right to dissent as well. Make it clear that you're not going to be used as an instrument for the oppression of free speech.

Sophia: next time keep close to someone with a camera. You go, girl...

thanks for the eloquent post from m. taylor. one thing however:

"The police say they had two hours for the march and that time was exceeded"

i was an organizer of the protest. we had a "permit" to walk across the bridge as long as we had no bullhorns or signs from 12pm to 2pm on that day. (it is noteworthy that walking across the golden gate bridge with no signs or loudspeakers is something anyone can do at any time without a permit)

the police ordered us to "stop protesting" at 1:45pm; 15 minutes before the "permit" had expired. that is when people starting getting arrested and sophia was brutalized.

The police are so fucked here in MA. They bother us all day long instead of stoping a 40 year old freak raping your daughter. They spend all their time busting some kids having a little fun. Meanwhile your daughter is grown up and now that 40 year old is selling her crack while she sells her body for it. And still they are fucking looking for a few kids having some fun. WHAT A GOOD FUCKIN JOB YOU FAT ASS PIGS eat my shit

First off since the 60's whether
it be in San Fransiso or especially in Washington DC
all Police whether it be in the sixties or in the 90's or in 2004 have always wanted confrontation at any protest or riot.....Thye want action but only when they have the fire power and upper hand ....You rebels are in the right and I applaud you for taking the intiative to show your right to demonstrate but do to your fear of imprisonment and lack of battle tactics and fire power you are of little or not threat nor fear to the supporters of the evil lie called democracy....Only the insurgents
in Palestine and Bagdad are makng headway and another very determined and angry mob once which demonstrated carring high powered rifles to a demonstration in America who always are suppressed and so used to police in unifrom and have abolsutely little fear or welcome state and federal prisons The Black who were Black Panthers and I think Muslims such as in Palestine or Bagdad were never confronted by police as the plice knew in thier hearts that these strong willed individuals all of which were armed and fully prepared to fight with verocity and fully willing to kill thier enemy again took no resistance....I have been to California and your action are niceness to ech other but so many persons who are really looking out for your individual selves and in your hearts fear deep down being arrested or inprisoned or committing death to your enemy.;

The police on the other hand do not absolutley and feel they are 100 percent allowed to atack and kill if necessary by the LYING law of America and the State Law so this is why you shall never succeed. You pray to be heard peacefully but deep down you know it is never going to happen!!!! Even if one of your members resists to the death you will flee You are not as qan army but as scared children ans willremain so until that day you become a REAL force to be reckoned with and then it may esaclate and National guard comes in as you overwhelm the local authority. You would be squashed
but as is happening in Bagdad right now even an army who is not weak but armed to the max is being destroyed slowly because it's opponants do not fearto take ultimate action probably because they have it in thier hearts just as the hardened Black protestors I mentioned who came to a protest armed heavily and ready to act..... Search your heart and tell your self the truth --You fear not being able to go and get a BIg Mac or buying some ICE creamm so keep on demonstating as children afraid to fight for what you believe in!!!!

if a cop pulls u over and says, "son your eyes look red. Have u been drinking?" you don't want to say: "officer your eyes look glazed. have you been eating donuts?"
