CHP -- the only terrorists on GG Bridge today

by anonymous copwatch
The only "terrorists" to be found on Golden Gate Bridge today were the California Highway Patrol. In full riot armor, with teargas bombs strapped to their chest, the CHP attacked people young and old, hitting them with metal nightsticks and spraying chemicals into their faces. A young 14-year-old girl was beaten repeatedly, and arrested. Over 25 other people were arrested.
1. Shame on all the sectarian groups who did not come to this protest because they think they are better than everyone else and prefer to play social games instead of fighting to win. Fuck you.

2. The cops were out of control. There were Coast Guard cutters, dozens and dozens of riot cops from the Highway Patrol, dozens of Park Police (who carry guns), cop videographers, cops on horseback, etc.

3. The protest organizers were very brave and continued on with the protest as planned. It came off pretty good.

4. The pigs were out of control, jabbing people in the back for "not walking fast enough," using pepper spray, attacking children, etc.

5. The pictures should be interested.

6. Again, an Indymedia journalist was targeted and arrested.

7. Several pigs were wearing American flag bandanas under their metal riot helmets. They did not interfere when several redneck-type assholes violently yelled at the group, telling those in attendance to "go back to your caves" or "this is my country and my bridge, not yours."

I got a real kick out of the arresting officers (all 20 of them needed to subdue just two stray protesters) who started to tell me, while I was sitting handcuffed against a wall, "America is the land of the free -- you can do whatever you want, if you don't like it, then you can leave..." As soon as I could begin to counter that essentially ludicrious statement, citing my personal reasons for *gasp* actually wanting to change and better this country, he tells me to shut up because I'm under arrest. The fucking hard-headed morons only wants to hear themselves talk and probably don't even know 1/4 of what they say
by Sascha (saschawinter [at] mac.com)
I was also arrested yesterday, for flying a black flag, the symbol of anarchy. I was peacefully walking near the toll booths and was attacked from behind by the Officers of the California Highway Patrol.
Earlier in the protest, I was beaten in the face, ribs and chest with a riot stick by officers McKinley and Merchant of the CHP.
I was sitting next to Geoff when he confronted the police and it made me very disgusted. These police officers acted revenged wolves, a product of the capitalist war machine they work for. They did not know what they were doing, and, after arresting me at the demands of their superiors, they showed their true ignorance of the issues. While at the police station, one of the officers asked where one of the protestors was from. He replied "Minneapolis." The officer asked "What city are you from?" as if Minneapolis was a state. We pay these people to carry loaded weapons?
by A Real Anarchist
You Idiot. The symbol of Anarchy is a RED flag. Get a clue.
by cp
is anyone kneejerk enough to fall for such an obviously ridiculous, baiting statement?
by You Cowards
The Cops were just doing their jobs. Those filthy hippies were disrupting traffic and preventing decent citizens from enjoying their hard-earned vacations.
by .
they were not disrupting traffic, the POLICE WERE. Not a single protesters walked into traffic, NOT ONE! Quit spewing your fucking bullshit.
by me
Actually the Red Flag is the communist flag, not the anarchist one. Like the fellow said, the anarchist flag is black. Anarcho-Syndicalists use a Red and Black flag. Communists took up the red flag which was the flag of the paris commune.

by patrick skey (henryfoolmiller [at] yahoo.com)
there is way too much profanity and hate remarks toward the cops who acted it would seem, ignorantly and violently towards the demonstators...their violent actions do not give anyone the right to call them assholes etc....this violates the rules of non-violence which at this juncture is the only way to resist the shadow that is slowly creeping over the land...check yourselves out homies...
by anti-cop
It isnt just their activities on the Bridge that leads us to call them assholes. It is their systematic occupation of poor neighborhoods. It is their daily assault on our communities which leads to an exploding prison population. It is their corruption and drug dealing and racism. You need to quit preaching, mr non-violent
by Jim
I've got ten pesos that says you've never been to one of these "occupied ghettos". Those of us who came up from nothing were always glad to see Officer Clancy on the street corner. Why the personal attack on the cops? Do you react like a spoiled child to everyone in a position of authority, or just those without obligation to listen to your sanctimonious ravings (aka bullshit)? That nice policeman was not your college professor, your therapist or your comrade in the struggle, he is somone we pay to keep the peace and preserve the freedoms of everyone on the bridge, not just for you hanky wavers. You've been in the ivory tower too long, your brain is oxygen starved.
by street cred
Wow, you can be anyone you want on the internet BBS, huh Jim? Enjoy it while you can, no one in real life face-to-face would ever believe such horseshit.
by Timmy
Hey, I love seeing cops in my neighborhood. I've never had an encounter with them and their presence makes me feel safe from some of the riff raffs in this city.

In any society that calls itself "FREE", people must have the right to walk on a bridge sidewalk and demonstrate their beliefs. The fact that the protestors were supposed to "get a permit" says a lot about this country being a place where we supposedly have "freedom" of assembly. Yeah, right, you are "free to assemble" -as long as it's before 2pm. Bear in mind that the protestors had gone to the lengths of actually securing a permit until 2pm and the police were hassling them at 1:30pm with a full on riot squad... Furthermore, the protestors were on the sidewalk and were not affecting traffic. Traffic was only grounded to a standstill on MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND because of the police involved. What gives??? At the same time, there's little reason to "bash" all cops and reinforce negativity. I totally agree with the person who cited "non-violence." The protest was about (as far as I know, i wasn't there, but wish I had known about it and was present to join our fellow humans who are making a diference by banding together in expressing themselves in the name of peace) increasing awareness and acting out of love. It is a serious disservice to throw in hateful remarks towards any group (ie. cops) in regards to the event. I know all kinds of cops, good and bad. Just like people, sometimes we are cool, sometimes we suck, and we are all things in between. Those specific cops who were involved in going overboard at the protest, they are obviously in need of review. What is up with dragging an 11 year old girl around on the asphalt and beating her with batons. Those officers need to have their eyes opened to their actions. How would they feel if their daughters were beaten while excercising their freedom that so many have died to defend? (it's Memorial Day as I write this)

And so in the spirt of bringing about a more fully realized community and to come to the aid of fellow humans who are working towards a better world (ever told someone that "world peace" is what you desire and meant it?) I invite you to join with me in making our voices heard. Apparently the SFPD have an e-mail address for a "public relations department". For all of those of you who wish to express your dissappointment of the Department's conduct in regards this matter and wish for improvements in the name of a more loving community, please e-mail sfpdpbaf [at] pacbell.net . The physical address is

Public Affairs Office
Hall of Justice
850 Bryant Street

Apparently the SFPD Chief is Chief Fred Lau. I don't know his number, but maybe he can be contacted at the Central Police Station. 766 Vallejo Street (415) 315-2400.

Also according to the SFPD website: "The San Francisco Police Commission mission meets every Wednesday at Thomas J. Cahill Hall of Justice 850 Bryant Street, Room 551, San Francisco, California. " Perhaps someone would be interested in going there to communicate with them regarding concerns. It is vital that we dialogue with our police and government and each other in ways that open our eyes to the fact that we are all human and live together and there is so much more to be gained when we all respect one another.

I am forwarding this posting to http://www.Craigslist.org (on the community bulletin board), the writers of the SF Chronicle story where I first learned of these events (Jim Herron Zamora jzamora [at] sfchronicle.com and Kelly St. Johnkstjohn [at] sfchronicle.com ) , Wendy Snyder (allpeepsmedia [at] yahoo.com ) of All People's Coalition to Stop U.S. Terror and Occupation (they organized saturday's march) , the War and Law League (http://warandlaw.homestead.com/) , the SF Board of Supervisors (board.of.supervisors [at] sfgov.org ), Mayor Willie Brown ( damayor [at] sfgov.org ) , the Cato Institute ( mchapman [at] cato.org ) , KQED ( civicspace [at] kqed.org ) , NPR ( ombudsman [at] npr.org ) and various other parties that are part of the overall picture. This is all in the spirit of peace and I invite you to contact me at alientao [at] yahoo.com so that we can dialogue and work together.

Hard-earned vacations?

All those "decent citizens" trying to enjoy their hard earned vacations wouldn't HAVE vacations if it weren't the protests and marches of the labor and union movements, you idiot. You want to go back to an 80-hour workweek with no benefits? How do you think you got those benefits? People who had the courage to march, to organize, to protest against unsafe working conditions, murdering pinkerton security cops, and an oppressive government and police force. "Filthy hippies" - what a tired cliche - go back to sleep.
And the proof of this is?
by Legal Advocate
Swearing does NOT constitute violence, except in the imagination of a [closet] conservative (so check the yourself...and state law, paper tiger ).

It is illegal to swear at a cop (profane language is NOT constitutionally protected free speech when directed at a person, particularly law enforcement); in fact any dialogue with the police can be construed as "making terrorist threats" or "menacing" (I seen people arrested for simply asking for a badge number).

It is better to let the lawyers, banners, and signs do the talking. Video doesn't lie.

"You want to go back to an 80-hour workweek with no benefits?"
This is the land of the free! start a business on the internet like i did. only in america i can do this. no country's government in the middle east would let me make the kind of money i make, with only my mind.
Seems this protest was made up of some regular protesters(who still use their dads gas and credit cards) and some very upset palestinian people.I wonder if that 11 year old girl will grow up respecting police or america? She is in a great place. I know cause it took me 20 yrs to get here traveling through 8 countries. And I get here and start MY OWN BUSINESS.. ONLY IN AMERICA!
by Ben Brown (realben [at] aol.com)
First, I am prejudiced against protesters in general. But when read about the 11 year old protesting in SF, that was too much. Her father should be locked up and charged with a felony, tried, and deported. It's not just that he had no control over his child, but he has indoctrinated his daughter from an early age, just like many Palistinians, to hate. It is sad that these children learn to hate from an early age. The idiot who wrote the article in the Indy Media about the police attacking the Palistinian protestors is a lunatic. How did the police know a 5 ft. 7 in. girl was eleven years old. Anyway, she should have stayed home with her brothers. Why is it that almost all protesters are young? It's because they are still stupid, but also because the older ones sit back and watch their children do the dirty work. It's kind of like terrorists. Do you ever see older terrorists? Never. The young people are the ones who blow themselves up and think they will go to heaven. They carry out those idiotic acts because they were taught to do so by their elders, who wouldn't think of doing those idiotic acts themselves.
by Jack (spiritchaser218 [at] aol.com)
This is the shit we need to fight against. what the fuck is that?!?!?! an 11 year girl gets arrested, a 14 year old is attacked? This is bull shit, the intentions for that march was to liberate and to let the palestinian's know we care. I'm involved with an activist group and we're currently planning protests for Palesatine, i'm just waiting for a pig to try and arrest me. i'll scream human rights so fucking loud the damn town will hear me.
by american protesters
Hey Ben, my recommendation to you is to pack your bags and go somewhere that your boot-licking ass-kissing mentality is accepted, like the Taliban government for instance. You would fit right in, you coward. I am an American, and we have a right to protest. If you disagree, get the fuck out of my country.
by Pissed Off
One question!!!! Could you make these same comments about your government and leadership in Palestine? I think not, you should think about where you are and the freedoms you hide behind. Before you make an ignorent comment about the way this country is run. Police are considered (LAW ENFORCERS), they are not Judges or Lawyers they simple carry-out the task of enforcing the law. And sometimes, that requires force common sense would've told you to leave if you saw police advancing on you.. Tell you what, go to any other country and protest you will be lucky to walk away period...
by palestinian
Um, not only are you pissed off but you are stupid too. Of course in Palestine you can protest -- you can protest all the time. People are critical of Arafat all the time. It is hard to spend any time at all in Palestine without seeing a protest. There are PA cops there, but they dont attack the crowd.

Now, if you have a protest in Israel, you will be teargassed, beaten and arrested.

I think "pissed off" needs to be educated a little bit about how the world works. Dumbass.
by mayam
i hope your son or your daughter will never be arrested like that.
Yours sincerelly.

You American, you watch. We will win. We are preparing new constitution of Islamic Republic of US. We will use your human rights, your freedom, your civil rights against you. We will win. Osma will win. Islam will win. We are the world. We have more powerful weapon than you have. We have our children and babies to sacrify. We will convert them to walking sucide bombers. What are you going to do?

Bush is pissing in his pant. He can't even take any action against my country, Saudi Arabia. Even though so many of our brother who targeted the WTC were from Saudi Arabai. My government giving $5,000 as reward to every suicide bomber against Israel. We are over a billion. We are over a billion sucide bomber.

You are history. Go read the book "End of the West".

Book "American Jihad" is a lie.

Allah is great.

I am born in the USA.. Grew up in Chicago and now living in Kentucky, just became Muslim. For the USA people. We have the USA Constitution declaring free speech, the right to practice religion. Tell me, whats the difference of a child being in a peaceful protest or in a crowd watching a parade or Mardi-Gras going by? Either way, the child has the right as much as adults to participate to practice her faith as much as a Christian or a Jew child does.
A Muslim does not make one a terrorist just as the IRA does not make a Catholic a terrorist. Or a German a Nazi. It is just that the perceptive of Islam..which is a VERY peaceful religion and people has NOTHING to do with MILITANTS such as Bin Laden. Because of Bin Laden coming from a Muslim country and background does not mean that Bin Laden follows the dictates of Islam just as your Christians do not follow the dictates of the Book in abusing women or children, or whatever.
90% of Muslim follow the laws of Islam peacefully. You people should look at MILITANTS as the evil-doers...not Muslim USA.
Remember that just over 150 years ago the North fought the South over the issue of slavery and freed them. It is interesting to see blacks still be treated as slaves still.
What's wrong in being a Muslim..it is just a faith, nothing more. Like what's wrong with being a Baptist or a Jehovah's Witness, for example?
I am proud to be a Muslim, and practicing its peaceful tenets.
Remember the US Constitution. Free Speech, Free to practice religion, Free to pursue the statue of LIBERTY.

What to do if you're stopped by The Police

To fight police abuse effectively you need to know your rights. There are some things you should do, some things you must do and some things you cannot do. If you are in the middle of a police encounter, you need a handy and quick reference to remind you what your rights and obligations are.

That's why the ACLU is making these tips available as a downloadable .pdf file. You can photocopy this and carry it in your wallet, pocket or glove compartment to give you quick access to your rights and obligations concerning police encounters.

"ACLU "Bustcard": Pocket Guidelines on Encounters with the Police

Complete instructions for printing the bustcard, and other resources on police reform are also availalble.

Be polite and respectful. Never bad-mouth a police officer.

Stay calm and in control of your words, body language and emotions.

Don't get into an argument with the police.

Remember, anything you say or do can be used against you.

Keep your hands where the police can see them.

Don't run. Don't touch any police officer.

Don't resist even if you believe you are innocent.

Don't complain on the scene or tell the police they're wrong or that you're going to file a complaint.

Do not make any statements regarding the incident. Ask for a lawyer immediately upon your arrest.

Remember officers' badge & patrol car numbers.

Write down everything you remember ASAP.

Try to find witnesses & their names & phone numbers.

If you are injured, take photographs of the injuries as soon as possible, but make sure you seek medical attention first.

If you feel your rights have been violated, file a written complaint with police department's internal affairs division or civilian complaint board.

KEEP THIS CARD HANDY!
IF YOU HAVE A POLICE ENCOUNTER, YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF.

1. What you say to the police is always important. What you say can be used against you, and it can give the police an excuse to arrest you, especially if you bad-mouth a police officer.

2. You don't have to answer a police officer's questions, but you must show your driver's license and registration when stopped in a car. In other situations, you can't legally be arrested for refusing to identify yourself to a police officer.

3. You don't have to consent to any search of yourself, your car or your house. If you DO consent to a search, it can affect you, rights later in court. If the police say they have a search warrant,ASK TO SEE IT.

4. Do not interfere with, or obstruct the police -- you can be arrested for it.

IF YOU ARE STOPPED FOR QUESTIONING

1. It's not a crime to refuse to answer questions, but refusing to answer can make the police suspicious about you. You can't be arrested merely for refusing to identify yourself on the street.

2. Police may "pat-down" your clothing if they suspect a concealed weapon. Don't physically resist, but make it clear that you don't consent to any further search.

3. Ask if you are under arrest. If you are, you have a right to know why.

4. Don't bad-mouth the police officer or run away, even if you believe what is happening is unreasonable. That could lead to your arrest.

IF YOU'RE STOPPED IN YOUR CAR

1. Upon request, show them your driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance. In certain cases, your car can be searched without a warrant as long as the police have probable cause. To protect yourself later, you should make it clear that you do not consent to a search. It is not lawful for police to arrest you simply for refusing to consent to a search.

2. If you're given a ticket, you should sign it; otherwise you can be arrested. You can always fight the case in court later.

3. If you're suspected of drunk driving (DWI) and refuse to take a blood, urine or breath test, your driver's license may be suspended.

IF YOU'RE ARRESTED OR TAKEN TO A POLICE STATION

1. You have the right to remain silent and to talk to a lawyer before you talk to the police. Tell the police nothing except your name and address. Don't give any explanations, excuses or stories. You can make your defense later, in court, based on what you and your lawyer decide is best.

2. Ask to see a lawyer immediately. If you can't pay for a lawyer, you have a right to a free one, and should ask the police how the lawyer can be contacted. Don't say anything without a lawyer.

3. Within a reasonable time after your arrest, or booking, you have the right to make a local phone call: to a lawyer, bail bondsman, a relative or any other person. The police may not listen to the call to the lawyer.

4. Sometimes you can be released without bail, or have bail lowered. Have your lawyer ask the judge about this possibility. You must be taken before the judge on the next court day after arrest.

5. Do not make any decisions in your case until you have talked with a lawyer.

IN YOUR HOME

1. If the police knock and ask to enter your home, you don't have to admit them unless they have a warrant signed by a judge.

2. However, in some emergency situations (like when a person is screaming for help inside, or when the police are chasing someone) officers are allowed to enter and search your home without a warrant.

3. If you are arrested, the police can search you and the area close by. If you are in a building, "close by" usually means just the room you are in.

We all recognize the need for effective law enforcement, but we should also understand our own rights and responsibilities -- especially in our relationships with the police. Everyone, including minors, has the right to courteous and respectful police treatment.

If your rights are violated, don't try to deal with the situation at the scene. You can discuss the matter with an attorney afterwards, or file a complaint with the Internal Affairs or Civilian Complaint Board.

How can our government try and tell us we are "free" if a peacefull protest conducted on a public walkway turns into something easily comparable to what police did to people in the sixtys. Has our country not already had enough riots and social uprising to have learned there lesson. Fuck the police
by John
There should be a much bigger protest on the same spot soon.

Beating, handcuffing and Kneeing an 11 year gold in the back should not be tolerarated by any civil society. All CHP officers involved in this should not only lose their jobs but should be barred from ever serving as a peace officer ever again.
by Craig
and those beating an 11 year girl exercising her right to peaceful protest are the worst kind. They should go to jail and lose their ability to serve as "Peace Officers" ever again.
NEWS FLASH

The girl was NOT, repeat was NOT beaten - she was ARRESTED and force was used because she resisted arrest. I would expect no different were I to resist arrest.

Rodney King was beaten - compare the 2 videos and tell me the girl was beaten.

When you blow things like this out of proportion as "injustice", it makes others evem more skeptical about other claims of injustice...

Nearly 200 anti-war protesters marched north across the GG bridge to denounce the "war on terrorism" at home and abroad. An eclectic group of both young and old, the protesters had to leave signs, banners, flags, flyers and even musical instruments of any type at the entrance to the
walkway of the bridge as stipulated by the terms of the permit. So once again, the exercise of freedom of speech and dissent is compromised as some sort of bargaining chip in order that they would "allow" us to cross the bridge, a public thoroughfare, even if the bridge itself is private
property. Despite every person being searched upon entering the walkway, unless of course you were, or looked like, a tourist, several protesters were able to sneak in such contraband material as political flyers (ooo!), flags (ooh!) and shirts declaring "Stop the War" (oh my!).

I stayed behind for a while with another friend playing plastic buckets as drums, which were not allowed as per the "permit". After playing for a while with a few others who showed up with drums, a cop grabbed my wrist and told me to stop playing. He confiscated my drum and sticks even
though I wasn't even on the bridge. I argued with whom appeared to be the head officer about the boundary of the permit, attempting in vain to convince him that I was not within it yet and as such still had the right to make all the fucking noise I goddamn please. He wouldn't even engage
with me in trying to define exactly where the permit was valid and where it was not. After my futile attempts I decided to catch up to the rest of my cohorts already halfway across the bridge.

Once out on the bridge, several people had banners and other signs confiscated by the police. The California Highway Patrol, the Golden Gate Bridge Police, and the San Francisco Police Department were all present with the majority officers coming from the CHP. I didn't count the number of cops, but it appeared that there were at least as many cops as protesters. They followed us along the road, blocking at least one lane of traffic, making sure we didn't try to take the street. Police intimidation came by way of helicopters and riot cops with rubber bullet rifles and teargas guns ready in open van doors facing us. Too bad no one driving by caught any glimpse of that face of the police state. This caravan continued all the way to the north end of the bridge.

As the march neared the north end of the GG bridge a good 100+ yards past the Marin County line, the CHP stopped us and decided to revoke the permit. The feeling of the protesters was one of indignation and outrage at the blatant abuse of power by the CHP. They would make it clear to us
that they were the ones who would tell us when, where and how much we would be able to exercise our freedom of speech.

I was able to reconvene with my friends and we decided to head up to the front of the protest to observe and lend support, among other things. At this point, the first real confrontations began as a large number of protesters wanted to cross the street and march back along the west walkway (southbound). This clearly went nowhere. The cops weren't about to let anyone cross the street for fear that we would actually all just sit down and block traffic going both directions, which we probably would have done. As it was, at this point the CHP began blocking all northbound traffic, the real news of the day according to the Chronicle.

Realizing we wouldn't be crossing the street without a major escalation of violence, several people resorted to holding their ground and sat down on the sidewalk where the police impeded our forward progress. Riot cops began pushing against the peaceful protesters with billy clubs. Those
sitting down soon got up, but the frontline solidified its resistance, locked arms and began pushing back.

For several minutes we pushed back and forth. Emotions ran heavy. Helmeted riot cops eyed individuals with a predatory stare that made me sick. A cop in back, clearly the one in charge, would put his hand on the shoulder of a cop who got too "into it" to calm him down. This would work very briefly however and the same commanding cop would then single out one protester and several cops would attempt to grab her or him. We all tightened up and held on to this one person and pulled her/him back.
This happened several times and also failed just as many. Every person who was captured was beaten and arrested. In a couple of the instances in which we succeeded in unarresting someone, we also all fell over and on top of one another. Several people still standing helped us up. This went on for some time.

At one point during this confrontation, everything de-escalated, but in reality the cops just wanted to officially tell us that the permit was revoked, that we were all obstructing the sidewalk, we had thirty seconds to comply and that that went for the media as well. This one brief occurrence is testament to the fact that the cops were the ones who escalated the situation in the first place and had the ability to de-escalate it. After their brief announcement, they escalated again. Unfortunately at this point we pretty much lost support from the rest of the march. People left the front line but there was still a good amount of people holding up. But bodies against metal billy clubs will eventually lose. We basically began to slowly comply and lost more and more ground as they pushed us southward. Everyone new they had won even though they would win very slowly.

But that was not enough for them. Our slow compliance would still not be tolerated. Shortly after, a fresh new batch of riot cops came in to take the place of those hard-working, billy club-swinging cops who had gotten so tired beating us up. With the new line came new grab attempts, the last one of which resulted in a big mass of us falling down, but this time we didn't get up until we were cuffed or hog tied. The main reason for us not being able to get up was that the cops pepper-sprayed those who attempted to help us up. Now people really fled and we were left to the devices of these "peacekeepers". The cops used those wonderful pain compliance techniques that we all love so much in order to pull us apart from one another. Several were thrown around after having been hog tied.

After being loaded all on a bus, we sat there for several hours as is normal for arrests of this type. We were allowed to go to the bathroom, but they took away some bread and water that were being passed around. Some clandestine cell phone calls were made. We talked a lot, too. We
counted 28 people on the bus, although I came to find out later that there were more arrests after ours. We all memorized the phone number for legal representation and talked with each other and made sure we were all alright as well as other general jail solidarity issues.

Finally we were taken to San Rafael, the Marin County Jail where we were cited and released, except for one man without identification who was booked and to my knowledge released the next day.

My more personal thoughts and reflections:

The permit: A piece of shit. It should never have been negotiated in the first place. Alas, this is the leitmotif of the mass protest movement. It is truly sad, and demonstrates how far fascism has come since the 40s, that those purportedly on the left don't see freedom of expression as an inalienable right, that you're born with, not that someone (cops or agents of the state) or something (the constitution) gives you.

The protest call: I was not really into this protest when I first heard about it since I recognized none of the organizing groups nor the All People's Coalition. I thought it was a pretty confrontational call, they were basically talking about massive civil disobedience on a major traffic
artery, and I figured it would be a massacre. I knew I wouldn't go alone but when I talked to others who were going
they convinced me to drag my ass out of bed.

The mass media: They seemed interested and actually filmed a couple of us arguing with a bike cop over the sheer ridiculousness of the permit. We even got a copy of it, it's a good read. They interviewed each of us as well but it didn't matter because we knew and they knew that the footage wouldn't be used. In the end, they seemed more concerned with finding out why there were so few of us rather than what our message was. Apparently, the coalition made no real effort to do media outreach and didn't even
send out a press release.

The independent media: Much props. There were two videographers that I saw out there taking some good footage. We watched some of one of them while waiting for the others to be released outside the jail.

The arrests: We were only charged with obstructing a sidewalk, could have been charged with felonies I'm sure but the arrests were ridiculous in any case. If we had been in the street then it would have made more sense but the cops just didn't want us there anymore. A few others actually got some more charges but I don't know the details there.

The solidarity: It was what I expected. When the cops made the call that everyone would be arrested if they didn't comply with their orders to leave, most of the march started to leave. Among the arrestees though, shit was tight. We stuck together and formed a good solidarity among us on the bus.

The cops: pure power trip as usual. If they had just let us finish marching the last couple hundred feet to the end of the bridge we would have turned around and walked right back without any provocation. If their intent was to silence us they would have done a better job of it if they had just left us alone since then they wouldn't have blocked off all northbound lanes of traffic to arrest us, we wouldn't have made the news (no violence, no news) and we would have went home without much ado and without all these posts on indymedia (the good ones and the bad ones). So maybe the cops were doing us a favor in that sense by initiating the violence, which got us some news coverage even if it was all bad and didn't cover the issues (what else is new?) I don't think the cops think that far in advance.

You want the CHP to expect your group will be on their "best behavior" for the rest of the march when they clearly displayed an willingness to break the permits limits by blocking traffic? As a rational human being, why would a CHP officer who is entrusted with the lives of everyone one the bridge make such assumption?

Could you imagine the public outcry if the CHP let your group cross the bridge (in violation of the permit)only to watch as one of the knuckleheads in your group caused an accident by purposely obstructing traffic? There would be condemnations, law suits, suspensions, etc., all because the CHP failed to uphold their obligations to public safety and the law -- in other words, they would get screwed for being "nice guys." If I was in their position, I'd do the same thing.

When you think about, this confrontation is roughly the the equivalent of a teenager/parental dispute. The adults are fully aware of the dangers that exist and are responsible for the kid's life, but the kid is just too strong-willed, too self-assured, and too inexperienced to see the bigger picture. So they rant carry-on about the injustice of it all, and start finding ways of skirting around their parents unfair rules.

I'm only sorry that you have bever lived in real "police-state" to know just how idiotic and inflammatory your comments.

In case you were unclear on the subject, NO PROTESTERS BLOCKED TRAFFIC ON THE BRIDGE THAT DAY. In fact they didn't even block the sidewalks. Who blocked the traffic AND the sidewalks? THE CHP! (OK admittedly they did let some tourists through on the sidewalk.)

Listen, all I said was that there was a point (AFTER the cops decided they would revoke our permit and not allow us to continue marching north toward Marin) when several protesters started chanting for the CHP to "Let us cross the bridge". Now, this can be taken two different ways:

1. Let us continue marching across the bridge northbound toward Marin, staying on the sidewalk and not obstructing any sidewalks.

2. Let us cross traffic lanes and march back south along the west side of the bridge.

From my view (warning: expression of opinion) #2 was what folks were wanting. If this was not the case, then good, because as 'works for me' points out, the cops would have been fools and irresponsible for having allowed us to cross traffic. However, 'works for me' reads too much into what I wrote. I said that people quickly gave up on this idea, if in fact that was anyone's intention in the first place. The cops could easily have de-escalated the situation by allowing us to finish our march north, on the east sidewalk, at which time we would have turned around and headed back to SF via the same east sidewalk, never crossing traffic. Obviously, I thought trying to get the CHP to let us cross traffic was ludricrous, they'd never go for it for the reasons 'works for me' mentions.

'works for me''s comparison to a teenager/parental dispute is insulting to say the least. Everyone who was out there understands the dangers of protesting, and if they didn't, due to some inexperience that 'works for me' pins on us when she/he wasn't there and/or doesn't know any of the protesters, they sure did gain some experience that day. I think the words you meant to use instead of 'teenager' and 'parent' are 'citizen' and 'state', respectively. In that context you would have us believe that the state or the parent always knows best, but anyone who knows anything about how the world really works recognizes the ridiculousness of that statement. If it were true, we'd still be living under British colonialist rule.

Yet all of this is ridiculous and insignificant compared to the reasons for calling the protest in the first place.

Even if we are not politicians we are still (at least for perhaps a little while longer) part of the political system and as such do have some tools with which to effect change that doesn't stem from my monetary value. When we were given a war without any conceivable end, a nullification of our rights via the Patriot act, a proxy war on the Palestinians funded by our tax dollars, government sanctioned racial profiling (racism) of immigrants and citizens alike, and all the political repression that goes with all of this, you better damn well be assured that I'll be making noise in every way I can to make sure that this doesn't actually become a full on police state. And if you can't see that that's the direction we're heading in, where we won't even be able to have a conversation like this, you're a fool. If you can and you choose to sit idly by, then, as Dante wrote, "The hottest seats in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, choose to do nothing."
by works for me
aaron d--

I think your original post clearly implies scenario #1

This clearly went nowhere. The cops weren't about to let anyone cross the street for fear that we would actually all just sit down and block traffic going both directions, which we probably would have done. As it was, at this point the CHP began blocking all northbound traffic, the real news of the day according to the Chronicle.
by works for me
Oops, I meant to say #2. As for the insulting comparison, the important thing to learn from this is that my view is one from the "independent observer's" perspective. I suspect that a great deal more people like me have a similar impression of the event. In a sense, it doesn't matter if you think we are wrong to think that way. What does matter is that your message is failing to reach its audience.

Why? The answer requires some truly unbiased thinking as to how the "public" feels about the issue and what is required of you to convince them (me) otherwise. If we feel your group isacting like a rebelious teenager, being overly dramatic and confrontational, then perhaps you ought to consider ways to give a different impression of yourselves during the next protest.

As I've posted before, my suggestion is to watch the early Civil Rights marches with MLK and model your dress and behavior after those very successful protests.

I'm sure that for most people, "let us cross the bridge" meant "let us continue the couple hundred feet on this sidewalk to complete our march".
by detainee
No one on the bridge even considered doing anything but staying on the eastern sidewalk. Why? because there were dozens and dozens of riot police with batons and tear gas guns lining the lanes of traffic.

It was the intention of the march to continue to the Marin side of the bridge; when the riot police prevented further northbound movement some protesters sat down in protest and were peppersprayed and arrested. The rest of the march was forcefully pushed back across the bridge, with further arrests along the way for "walking too slow."

So far, all charges resulting from the bridge action that have appeared in court have been dropped. And at this point several well-known civil rights groups are signing on to ensure not only that all other charges are dropped immediately, but that this gross abuse of power by the Bridge Authority and Highway Patrol never happens again.

Many videos are available, for instance this one has some on the scene narration and video of frivolous pepper spraying: http://www.indybay.org/news/2002/05/129446_comment.php#130971

I agree with 'works for me' in the sense that we do need different protest tactics in order to reach out to the rest of society with our message, but let's be realistic. There were only a few hundred people at this protest. Whatever the reasons for the low turnout, if the cops hadn't stopped us from finishing the march we wouldn't have made any news, mainly because the cops never would have felt the need to block off more than the one lane of traffic that they did until they escalated the situation. Remember the Chronicle's front page headline, "Protest Snarls Bridge Traffic" or something similar. That was the news, not any message we had.

Besides, outside of making noise at public protests, I personally utilize a lot of other venues and tactics to get my message out. I've held teach-ins where I work and in my union, lobbied my reps, appeared on the radio, written letters to the editor and articles to other publications, friends and family, and gone to protests that other people organize. All of these tactics and probably a million more are essential to achieving what we desire, an end to this war and all wars. So the diversity is there.

And Martin Luther King did sit-down protests of all sorts, in all kinds of places. And his tactics largely didn't work until there were those who would push the envelope because people frankly didn't give a shit about civil rights, especially for blacks, until there was a determined minority willing to put their bodies on the line for what they believed in. Do you think the Black Panthers had nothing to do with the Civil Rights movement? Even those within MLK's circle and MLK himself towards the end recognized the futility of non-violence to get their message out. What's the difference here? So we're a bit more defiant to the police. We're still almost exclusively non-violent (I can't account for everyone there of course) and look at what it gets us. I think our privilege as a pretty white movement still allows us to do that but again, I reiterate that all this comes back to the "why".

Why aren't we instead having a conversation on the effects of the "war on terrorism" at home and abroad? Can anyone justify this war? Are we safer now? Will we ever be?

Or how about a discussion on messaging? Again, I had nothing to do with the organizing of this protest and largely disagreed with it, on many points. I agreed enough with it however to lend it my solidarity, and by the end it became more a question of the police repression than anything else.

And the anti-war demo on April 20th? What did you think of that protest? There were tens of thousands that day. Completely peaceful, no police confrontations. How was the news coverage? For the size of it, pretty crappy. And the issues of this war? Almost non-existent and not very on target. They almost always get it wrong, largely because they oversimplify it. Especially when you're talking about complex issues such as these.
by aaron d
Mike,

My previous posts talk to your question of why I was out there at least. But I'll say it again, I unconditionally oppose the "war on terrorism" in all of its manifestations. I agree, as my previous posts point out, that questions of protest tactics and police brutality are beside the point. That's not why I originally went.

To equate our protest for the very reasonable legitimate demands of the majority of Palestinians (not necessarily of those of their leaders) with wanting the same system under which they are ruled, or a desire for suicide bombings to take place here, as you allude to, is totally unfounded and incredibly ridiculous. Unfortunately, it would seem that from your comments on Palestinians that you aren't actually interested in debating and seriously considering the situation in the Middle East.

I know several people who have actually gone to the Occupied Territories as Internationals and they were welcomed with open arms. You also show your ignorance by alluding that all Palestinians are Muslim. There is a rather large minority of Palestinian Christians as well as those who don't necessarily adhere to any religion and advocate a secular Palestinian state, like Israel's supposed to be. You should refrain from making such ludricrous statements until you learn a little more about the area.

And as far as shitting on those who sustain our rights, to whom exactly do you refer? The cops? The state? Our fellow citizens? You should refer to my original post where I talk about the exercising of rights of expression, that basically they are not rights that someone or something gives you or allows you to exercise, you are born with them and can exercise them at will.

I'm getting really tired of people who tell me to leave my own country. It's as much mine as it is yours. All the freedoms you and I enjoy were fought for and people died for them, and I'm not talking about wars on foreign soil, I'm talking about labor struggles for the 8-hour day, the right to organize, the women's suffrage movement, civil rights, environmental protections, etc.. They were all fought for in the streets, people exercising their natural rights. That is true patriotism, not this "yes, sir", "no, sir", "how high?" fall-in-line bullshit. So before you spout off telling me to leave my own country, you should check yourself. What was the last thing you did for this country? And I ain't talking about shopping to prop up the economy.

America is being consumed by the same activities of the beginning of the Nazi Regime, except our current regime has been creeping in for over 20 years.

Read about the mass blockage of good citizens from speaking at city council meetings or being allowed to participate in government throughout the South East U.S..

San Francisco is the forefront of the American struggle for rights and protections guaranteed by the constution and amendments, and SF is as under attack in many ways as many of the backward and regressive cities of the South Eastern U.S..

Our government in many facets is a Nazi regime under an American veil of propaganda and subjugation.

It is no wonder that expatriates from the USA are becoming as commonplace as illegal immigrants in the USA.

>>>Everyone who was out there understands the dangers of protesting, ...<<<

It need not be this way. If those who are organizing make clear the objectives of the protest and encourages those participating to stay within the confines of what they have agreed to do, there should be no danger. If you believe the police have treated you wrongly, i.e. in this case, forced you to quit before your allotted time is up, you certainly have a right to state your grievance in court. But, don't start arguing with them while you're there. Reasonably say, "We have until 2:00pm, it's only 1:30pm. We wish to utilize the time we have had set aside for us." If they push you off anyway, make note of what happened and address your greivance through the proper channels.

If you come up to a stop sign, come to a complete stop, and continue, and the police pulls you over for running a stop sign, you don't argue with the cop. You state that you came to a complete stop, you accept the ticket if he disputes your claim, and you show up in court and fight the charge. That's the procedure.
If the Founding Fathers had done that, America would still be a colony.
by PC Guy
>If the Founding Fathers had done that, America would still be a colony.

They did. It was only after their greivances were not heard they took up arms. If you feel as though the US government is not listening to your grievances, I suggest you do the same. Write a declaration of independance telling King George to piss off, pick up a gun and start killing "red coats". That's REAL protest. Any takers?

What was the end result of the American Revolution? Power in the US was taken away from English elites and increased in the US elite. At first, remember, only white males with property could even vote.

Those barriers are gone, but the existence of an elite (mostly white men with a LOT of property) persists. Shall we call a revolution and then find out that we have simply shifted the elite again? Or slightly enlarged it?

It'll take a little more planning than just picking up weapons and starting to shoot people.

Besides, why kill people when a general strike might achieve the same objective?
If the Founding Fathers had done that, America would still be a colony.

>>> It is their [cops] systematic occupation of poor neighborhoods <<<

Amazing, you whine because there are too many cops in poor neighborhoods, then you whine because there aren't enough cops in poor neighborhoods.

Ask the people hiding in their homes from drug dealers, crackheads, gang bangers, etc. whether they would prefer more or fewer police in their neighborhoods. What do you think they'll say?

All of this tired rhetoric about "capitalist pigs" etc. is so reminiscent of the misinformed and impotent turds who "rose up" during the 60's that it's sickening!! Where do you think all of THEM are now? I'll tell you . . there teaching at our Universities, running successful businesses and growing pot in Humboldt county. We have police, riot squads and the like BECAUSE of people like you . . . .hope it hurt, dumbass!

last year Oakland voted overwhelmingly for more police
but don't tell me the retort... (that was only 27% of the vote so it doesn't count like care not cash) you will most likely want to get approval from the criminals for more police "right" (or some other equally stupid argument)
