today, on tuesday the 21st of may, one day before he arrives, approximately 70 thousand protesters (police estimates speak of 18,000) gathered to voice their dissapproval of president bush, war and capitalist globalization among other topics like environmental destruction, death penalty and many more.
this huge protest under rallying cries like 'we don't want your wars mr. president', 'stop bush', 'warmongers unwanted' and many imaginative like 'peace for the world - pretzels for bush' was organized by a coalition called 'axis of peace' of more than 200 groups consisting of the anticapitalist-movement, the peace movement, parts of the environmental movement and members of left political parties and countless other groups.
a small gathering initiated voicing 'friendly protest' by members of the ruling green party (the junior partner of the so called 'social democrats') ended abruptly after several leftist activist interrupted it shouting 'warmongers' and 'hypocrites'. the protests were inaugurated yesterday by a spectacular stunt
by a lone activist who climbed the 'victory tower' in central berlin to unfold a huge banner displaying the words 'globalize solidarity not war'. he got lots of media attention before he submitted to the police. he was greeted by a applauding crowd.
the protests are carried by a wide variety of groups using different tactics, there were already puppets and costumes, drums and dancers and direct actions like 'rename the streets', but from tomorrow on even more creative protests are expected like city wide direct action, reclaim the streets, 'cowboys for peace'.
some protestors and organizers stressed that they do not protest against america or the american people but against the war policy of the us government and their allies (also the european ones).
