The Shortwave Report 5/17/02 ¡LISTEN GLOBALLY!

by Dan Roberts (outfarpress [at] saber.net)
A 30 minute review of international news and opinions recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast-13.7MB & quick/streaming-3.4MB. With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast upon notification. Netherlands, China, Germany, Spain, and Cuba
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (May 17) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality 13.7MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.4MB) (29:55) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application
(RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired at 7pm PST this Friday evening at KZYX/Z Philo CA and you MIGHT be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org/
There are several other streams that work quite well- http://members.cruzio.com/~frsc/ Freak Radio Santa Cruz streams this program on Friday at 5:35pm and on Monday at 9am.
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.rinku.zaq.ne.jp/bkaec205/
streaming the SWR at Fri 9:30PM/ Sat 9:30AM PM/ Sun 9:30AM PST
This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, China Radio International, Radio Deutsche Welle, Spanish National Radio, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Netherlands- this weeks election results in the Netherlands were radically altered by the assasination of a rt-wing candidate 10 days before the polls- the new ruling coaltion is markedly conservative, not unlike recent election results in France and Britain. The Indian part of Kashmir was the scene of more deadly clashes this week, and India’s Prime Minister vows revenge.
From China- Pakistan denies involvement in the recent attacks in India. A new NATO/Russia council is in the works, to be formalized at the end of May. The United Nations Security Council has extended the “oil-for-food” program for Iraq.
From Germany- a Brazilian environmentalist who helped create the Rio Summit has died. The 2002 Bribe-Payers Index has been published by Transparency International, pointing out that corruption levels continue to flourish globally, along with the misuse of power. Police in Berlin are gearing up for violent demonstrations next week upon George Bush’s 2 day visit.
From Spain- In the Dominican Republic, one person was killed and 2 injured in riots preceding parliamentary elections. Mexican President Fox has joined the European Union in criticism of the US farm subsidies and capital punishment.
From Cuba- On Monday, Jimmy Carter addressed the Cuban people, stating it was time to end the old animosities between the nations- he also pointed out a lack of civil liberties in both. Colin Powell has retracted the US statement that Cuba was working on and distributing biological weapons. The question of US involvement in the failed coup in Venezvuela is unresolved, with Pres Hugo Chavez saying he has proof of US military presence. The recent US/Russia agreement on nuclear arms reduction is being heavily criticized in Russia.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station.
I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
