# Pacifica Now! Pacifica Radio's Role in Asserting Speech Rights
Tuesday, May 14th, 7:00 pm.
During Pacifica Radio's first 20 years the stations gave voice to heretical, banned and underground movements and challenged government repression. What role can Pacifica have extending and defending speech rights today? With Peter Franck, member of the Committee on Democratic Communication of the National Lawyer's Guild and former President of Pacifica Radio. New College, 777 Valencia Street, San Francisco.
The Pacifica Now! Series includes weekly classes and a conference to engage a long-term discussion of the key underlying social-philosophical challenges facing the network and the movement. Classes are held on consecutive Tuesdays through June 11th at New College, 777 Valencia, SF. Donations requested (no one turned away). The conference takes place June 18th-21st at New College. For more information: 510-527-1884 or http://www.newcollegenews.net/cesocialchange.html

# YLEM Forum: Artists, Freedom and Privacy Wed May 15 7:30 PM
McBean Theater, The Exploratorium 3601 Lyon St FREE
http://www.ylem.org issues and legislation affecting
artists, including intellectual property and the Hollings bill.
Will future machines prevent faithful duplication of images
as well as music and film? What about fair use and copying
ones' own work? Another concern is privacy vs. marketing and security
information-gathering. Is a certain amount of anonymity
necessary for free thought?
"Why Johnny Can't Encrypt: Social Aspects and Barriers to Adoption of
Privacy Technology" is the subject of Matt Hamrick's talk. Use of
privacy-enhancing technology has been compared to the use of seat
belts or condoms: It's there to protect against infrequent crises.
Seat belt usage is nearly universal in the United States, but
usage of even the simplest privacy technology is limited to a
small percentage of Internet users. The question is, why?
Matt Hamrick spends his day developing security
features for mobile handheld devices. He's worked as a
Cryptographer, an Engineering Manager, a Bail Bondsman,
and a Marine. When not prodding cell phones or
PDA's he enjoys a good novel and occasionally writes under several
different pseudonyms...
Future Forum dates: July 17, September 18, November 20.
