OAKLAND, CA—Earth First! organizer Darryl Cherney plans to address students
in several classes at Oakland High School (Park and MacArthur) Friday
morning, April 26, about civil rights and the car-bomb attack on him and
fellow activist Judi Bari. In fact, the bomb exploded in Bari’s Subaru
right in front of Oakland High School on that fateful May 24, 1990,
morning, sending the car into a slide that stretched more than 100 yards,
scattering debris everywhere along Park Avenue and MacArthur Blvd.

Cherney will sing, show slides, and speak in a presentation not unlike the
one he and Judi Bari were planning to give the day they were bombed. He
will address three classes, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. If media would like
to attend a classroom presentation in addition to the press conference at 1
pm, they can call the above number to make arrangements.

Cherney is a plaintiff in the civil rights lawsuit Bari v. FBI, presently
on trial in the Oakland Federal Courthouse. He and the estate of the late
Judi Bari (who died in 1997) are claiming unlawful prosecution based on the
FBI and Oakland Police Dept.’s handling of the incident, in which Bari and
Cherney were accused of carrying the bomb knowingly. No charges were ever
filed, and the case was never solved.

“This car bomb attack on Judi and me is also part of Oakland High School’s
history,” said Cherney. “It’s a privilege to be able to bring that living
history right into the classrooms.”

Cherney will address members of the media about the ongoing lawsuit and his
high school visit in front of Oakland High at 1 pm Friday.
