Palestinian ambulances have repeatedly been used to ferry bombers and/or explosives. The Israelis would be crazy not to search them or to be wary of their presence in combat zone.
The International Red Cross has had moments of triumph and shame in its history. The way it is behaving in the Mideast now does not represent its finest hour.
Although it's meant to be scrupulously neutral, the Red Cross' hopelessly partisan stance was already made clear by its acceptance of the Palestine Red Crescent Society as an affiliate - while denying the same status to Israel's Magen David Adom (Red Star of David).
Now, spokesmen for the International Committee of the Red Cross are going on TV to denounce the Israeli army's insistence on searching vehicles and individuals belonging to the ICRC or Palestine Red Crescent.

Until the International Red Cross returns to its traditions of true neutrality, everything its spokespeople have to say about Israel or Afghanistan or Iraq should be taken with large grains of salt.
Meanwhile, the American Red Cross should start re-examining its ties to the world body.

What was the catalyst for Herzl to devise the concept of Zionism? Anti-Semitism -- that's right, read your history. From the Crusades to the Russian & Polish & Romanian pogroms of the 19th and early 20th Centuries to the Holocaust, Jews have particularly been persecuted and murdered for their distinctive religion and culture as well as for a million stereotypes or percieved slights. They've been persecuted for too communist and too capitalist in their economic and political philosophy. They've been persecuted for being too distinctive and refusing to assimilate and they've been persecuted for assimilating. They've been persecuted for being successful and persecuted for being failures. They've been persecuted because they didn't have a country and now they are being persecuted because they do.
The madness needs to stop and the only way to do that is to give Jews a place that is theirs.
It is intellectually dishonest to claim that Jews have not been persecuted to the point that we need a place to call our own. This is not due to our racism -- this is due to the racism of others who ostracized and persecuted Jews to the point that Jews decided they needed a safe haven!

Anti-Jewish pogroms in France and Eastern Europe, a synagogue bombed in Tunisia (16 dead) and one in Saskatoon, hate crimes here in Berkeley including the assault on two Orthodox men and two other assaults in the last year and egging of students in the middle of observance of Yom Kippur as well as a cinderblock through the window and grafitti "F-- the Jews." On the streets of Berlin, the site of Nazi atrocities two middle eastern men asked two women if they were Jewish, because they saw the 21 year old wearing the religious symbol the Star of David. When she said she was, he assaulted both women bruising them badly in the face and ripping off the Star of David, not because they support Israel, but because they were Jews!
This wave of anti-Semitic hate and pogroms proves that Israel is necessary. The answer to the Israeli Palestinian conflict must work for both parties -- namely security for Israel within the parameters of Camp David or Taba agreements and a Palestinian state in the West Bank Gaza and Arab East Jerusalem. Jews are entitled to security and after the Holocaust, it is unconscionable for you to rationalize doing away with Israel.

The Jews ARE NOT Nazis. The Nazis exterminated innocent defenseless Jews systematically trying to kill them one by one in ghettoes, cattle-cars and concentration camps with gas chambers. The Jews were peaceful and even when they fought back, it was against the military and police and not against civilians.
By contrast, Israel is making preventative incursions when the well-armed Palestinians are attacking peaceful women and children in Seders and Bar Mitzvahs in suicide bombing atrocities and while JEWS are getting brutally attacked around the world for being JEWS.

Further, they have been receiving Apache helicopters from another outside power with a history of military actions against the region. This outside power has miltary bases in six countries of the region propping up monarchies and dictatorships widely hated by their own people. It is a shame though, because I really think we could make some progress if you were big enough to admit you had shown some anti-Semitic tendencies and were willing to reconsider your attitude towards Jews in light of the fact that you yourself displayed several characteristics of the age old hatred which Jews have faced.
A peaceable resolution requires give and take and compromise among both parties. I'm more than willing to concede Palestinians' right to the Gaza and West Bank and Arab E Jerusalem, if they respect Israel's right to exist and be free from terror. I think that shows far more open-mindedness than you have displayed so far and hope that you can open your heart and mind -- that is the only way peace can be achieved.

I grew up in the city and know quite well that all Jews are not rich. Where's my check? However, I remember when fascist skin-heads invaded my neighborhood for year and we had to fight them off. Who did I fight with? Black guys and punks. And then I visited a friend in Skokie. I swear there were dozens of 16 year old Jewish girls who'd just gotten nose-jobs to look like the gentiles.
