Tree-sits in Freshwater!

by Shunka (shunka_2002 [at] yahoo.com)
Two more tree-sits have gone up recently, in the Freshwater Creek watershed.
This press release was written by former Freshwater tree-sitter, Nate, who waited out the timber harvest plan that his sit was in, saving the Old Growth Redwood tree, "Mariah."

Another 182 acres, including old-growth, approved for clear-cut.

Activists respond with another Freashwater tree-sit.

Initiative to protect California’s remaining old-growth progresses.

While MAXXAM / Pacific Lumber continues the radical plan to clear-cut the last 3% of our heritage redwoods, forest defenders take the conservative position protecting not all the old-growth forest, just the last 3%.

Freshwater creek, a watershed of suffrage, has endured the burden of MAXXAM / Pacific Lumber’s debt driven clear-cutting for over a decade. The results of this devastation include down stream residents experiencing flooding of their homes and access roads, detrimental affects on their water quality and quantity, and property values that plummet as a result of MAXXAM / Pacific Lumbers devastating forest practices.

With over 500 acres of clear-cutting planed in Freshwater Creek for this year alone, forest defenders take their point to a higher level. After 20 days of continuous occupation in the tree known as, “Jerry,” tree-sitter Remedy says, “The last of the old-growth must be protected. I am sitting in a tree that is older than capitalism, it does not deserve to be cut for corporate profits.”

Also working on this issue is The Citizens Campaign for Old-Growth Preservation. This is a grass roots effort to qualify a ballot initiative that aims to protect trees in California that are older than California (1850). When The Heritage Tree Preservation act passes this November the trees occupied by the tree-sitters will be protected under it’s provisions. This effort makes the tree sits of extreme importance as without direct protection these trees would be cut prior to the passing of this protective measure. This initiative needs your help! Go to http://www.ancienttrees.org or call 213-484-4474 to find out more about the effort and to get involved.

Freashwater tree-sitters Remedy and Raven stand to endure dramatic forest devastation and personal threats as the 123 acres around them are clear-cut while they protect the most beautiful remnant old-growth in the area. “Clear-cutting destroys the quality of life of residents in the logging areas, adding toxins to their water and flooding their homes. How many more homes will be destroyed by clear-cut induced land slides before this devastating practice is outlawed.” Says Freashwater tree-sitter Remedy.
