100 Soweto Electricity Activists have now spent 2 nights in jail

by SECC/APF (ahmed [at] union.org.za)
The Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee in South Africa campaigns against evictions and electricity cut-offs. Last December, the ANC government labelled these poverty stricken residents as a gang of criminals. On Saturday 6th April, 100 members were arrested for cutting off the water to the Mayor of Joburg's house. They did this after the Mayor's bodyguard shot at them while they were peacefully protesting in the street outside. Please! phone or fax the SA embassy in your country and demand the immediate release of the members and free services like electricity and water to the poor!

Full report on saturday's protest
by SECC/APF April 7 2002, Sun, 10:23am

[very good photos are on the SA indymedia site]

This serves as an update on the story of the protest march to Amos Masondo’s house in Kensington yesterday, Saturday, 6 April 2002. FROM THE SOWETO ELECTRICITY CRISIS COMMITTEE/ANTI-PRIVATISATION FORUM (SECC/APF)
A bus-load of SECC members embarked on a “Fire the Mayor – Fire the Council” protest. What was meant to be a peaceful march turned sour when a security guard, a “Mr Mathebula”, brandished a firearm and pointed towards the protestors. At that point in time, there was no sign whatsoever that the protesters were on a mission to damage or cause any harm to anybody or property.

It was after the security guard fired live ammunition, injuring two people, a youth from Thembalihle and a pensioner from Tshiawelo, that all hell broke loose.

80 people were charged with public violence and are presently still held at Jeppe Police Station. The signs today are that there are instructions from the national level to interfere with the granting of bail. The court hearing and bail application will be heard tomorrow.

What is upsetting is that the security officer is roaming around a free man, while being charged on a more serious offence, that is attempted murder on 2 counts.

In an attempt to divide the protesters, an ID parade was conducted at Booysens Police Station today. Our comrades were not given their right to a fair ID parade, they were still wearing their SECC/APF T-shirts. On the basis of this parade, 8 people were charged with malicious damage to property.

Furthermore, the SECC/APF is incensed at the callousness of the SAPS in treating elderly people worse than criminals, and refusing to grant the elderly people bail.

The SECC/APF will continue to picket and protest against all the mayors and councillors who do not deliver and furthermore will call for their immediate removal from the councils.

FORWARD WITH THE “FIRE THE MAYOR – FIRE THE COUNCIL CAMPAIGN”!
AWAY WITH LAZY COUNCILLORS AWAY!
