Homosexuality a Factor in Sex Abuse by Priests

by Joel Mowbray
the overwhelming number of cases made public so far, the victims have been teenage boys (not girls),
Although greeted with a wave of protest, suggestions by Vatican spokesman Dr. Joaquin Navarro-Valls of a link between homosexuality and sexual abuse by priests cannot be lightly dismissed, and, in fact, demand further exploration.

Part of the sensitivity in this discussion is the fear that such comments imply a connection between homosexuality and pedophilia. But in the overwhelming number of cases made public so far, the victims have been teenage boys (not girls), meaning that this does not fit the clinical definition of pedophilia, which is the obsessive sexual attraction to prepubescent children.

In order to truly get at the root of the problem, the imperative question is why has the homosexuality of priests resulted in the molestation of adolescent boys?

According to most estimates, 25-50% of priests are homosexuals, compared to the 3-5% of men in the general public who are gay. Not only does the priesthood have a disproportionately strong appeal to homosexuals, but most of the priests involved in the scandals came of age during the sexual revolution of the late 60's and early 70's. Adding further fuel to the fire is the immaturity of many of these priests, who often joined the seminaries fresh out of grade school, denying them the normal social experiences of adolescence. The combination of homosexuality, lax sexual attitudes, and immaturity has proven a recipe for disaster.

The vast majority of priests accused of sexual abuse are middle-aged, an age group who came into the priesthood at a time of massive social upheaval, both in society at large and within the Church hierarchy. Around that time, homosexuals, or those who were at least sympathetic, began assuming more positions of power, including heading up dioceses and seminaries, according to Michael S. Rose, author of the forthcoming book Goodbye Good Men. In an interview, Rose discusses how now-deceased Joseph Bernadin, who was later Cardinal of Chicago, pushed out many conservative clergy members throughout the diocese and in the seminary when he became Archbishop of Cincinnati in 1972, replacing them with homosexuals and homosexual sympathizers.

Male homosexuality is inherently promiscuous. In a heterosexual relationship, women moderate the innate, intense male sex drive. But in a homosexual context, there is no such check. In short, gay couples have two people with male attitudes about sex, which naturally leads to a more permissive view of sexuality. And when seminaries began filling up with homosexuals--both in terms of seminarians and in leadership positions--promiscuity inevitably followed.

In The Changing Face of the Priesthood, author Father Donald Cozzens, the former head of a Catholic seminary, depicts the priesthood as "becoming a gay profession," and says that homosexual culture is now dominant at many seminaries. In an interview for this story, one priest says that at his former Milwaukee seminary, an openly gay seminarian often had his "good friend" come for overnight visits--all with the knowledge and tacit approval of the administration. Rose cites several examples in Men of gay priests and seminarians living an active, promiscuous homosexual lifestyle, including some who party together at gay nightclubs.

So how does this relate to the sex abuse scandals? The generation of priests who are largely responsible for the rash of sexual abuse cases mostly entered the priesthood at an extremely early age, ushered into an ensconced environment where they never got a chance to grow up. Teenage boys are the natural objects of sexual desire for an immature homosexual who was enveloped in a promiscuous, homosexual culture in the seminary.

What's the solution to this national tragedy? Given that homosexuals are such a significant presence in the American priesthood, the Church can't exactly run them all of out of town, nor should they. Just because someone is homosexual does not mean that he is necessarily sexually active, although Rose is skeptical that a gay priest in a sexually charged, all-male environment can adhere to the chastity discipline.

Reducing the number of homosexuals in the priesthood also might prove an elusive goal, because someone who's gay still faces a much lower personal cost to becoming a priest than a heterosexual, who actually has to forgo having a wife and kids. Rose says that many vocation offices have been actively recruiting gay men to seminary life for at least 30 years, perhaps to enhance the clout of what liberal priest Father Andrew Greeley has dubbed the "lavender mafia," or the power structure of the gay subculture of the priesthood.

The Church needs to come to grips with the situation that has developed over the past 35 years. Homosexual conduct by seminarians and priests must be absolutely condemned, and chastity must be thoroughly reinforced as a crucial element of the priesthood. The only way to achieve that goal is by altering the dominant gay culture found in many seminaries and even some dioceses.

Changing the culture of the priesthood is only the first step in addressing the sexual abuse crisis, but it is an absolutely necessary cornerstone of any successful reform effort.

"Male homosexuality is inherently promiscuous."

This is not true. Males are not inherently promiscous - no more than women. Pure brainwashed speculation with no evidence.

"In a heterosexual relationship, women moderate the innate, intense male sex drive."

My, you do have a brainwashed, traditional view of women, don't you? You should expand your social horizons.

The writer is a mal-informed bigot and a fool.

Here's a radical idea:

Instead of ratcheting up the levels of Guilt, Shame and Oppression upon priests and others, why don't we try supporting and celebrating consensual sexuality.

Change the stupid rules so that it's OK for priests to be sexual beings... for them to have sex... with any consenting adult of their choosing.

Perpetraitors of sexual abuse often were themselves abused in the past. The cycle tends to repeat. So think about looking into their childhoods.

These cycles can be broken. The abusive acts and the concomitant shame, doubt and self-hatred can be changed. There can be healing.

But the means of achieving it does not include oppression, fear, ignorance, and scapegoating.

At least 90% of child molesters and abusers are heterosexual. Some are homosexual. To a large degree this is irrelevant. What is relevant is that we live in a society that is sexually intolerant and repressive; this has tragic consequences for us all.

Don't get rid of gay priests. Instead, openly welcome them. And welcome women of all preferences.

Or, alternatively, just get rid of the damned priesthood altogether!

I don't need anyone to interpret g-d for me. You probably don't, either.

Peace.

i don't even know why i'm legitimitizing this ill informed crap with a response but here's a thought; maybe it's not so much the priesthood that needs reforming (though it certainly does) but the larger culture that stigmatizes homosexuality to the degree that people feel a lifetime of denial of sexuality and self-loathing are the only alternative to heterosexuality.

The major "factors" in the abuse of kids by priests are the priests who did it and the Church that enabled them.

Priests have "access," if you will, to boys, who serve as altar boys and have other exclusive encounters with priests. Like ostensibly hetero prisoners, priests are drawn to men/boys because the priesthood is an intensely male society and males are most readily available. If women were altar "girls" and priests, there would be a great deal more "heterosexual" abuse.

The notion that the promiscous ethic of the sixties contributed significantly to priest abuse is also spurious. The abuses by the sixties generation are the ones we are learning about. Such abuse was probably even more rampant in the authoritarian, pre-60's era, when priests possessed extraordinary moral authority and male/male abuse was even more hushed up than now. Anger over sexual abuse by priests (and nuns) was a major peasant grievance against the Catholic Church during the Spanish Civil War, for example.

The basic problem is that the Church is a dictatorship that preaches a punitive, misogynist and homophobic sexual ethic. Destroy the dictatorship and the ethic and you go a long way towards addressing the problem.

homosexuality is a birth defect, like webed toes. pedaphilia is a sickness, like schizophrenia. homosexuality is not a choice. allowing yourself to rape a child is not excusable no matter what the situation.

i dont think sickness excuses crime. i think sick people should be punished like well people.

the world is stuck with homosexuals so we should learn to accept and live with them. the world may also be stuck with pedaphiles, we should learn to run over them with steam rollers.

gay doesnt equal pedaphilia anymore than it equals serial killer.

but religion will always equal cancer.

"Rose says that many vocation offices have been actively recruiting gay men to seminary life for at least 30 years, perhaps to enhance the clout of what liberal priest Father Andrew Greeley has dubbed the 'lavender mafia,' or the power structure of the gay subculture of the priesthood."

Yes, and this "lavender mafia" is a horribly misogynistic culture. If a gay man hates women, what better place to go than the Catholic seminary, where they are completely excluded from any power whatsoever?

"The Church needs to come to grips with the situation that has developed over the past 35 years. Homosexual conduct by seminarians and priests must be absolutely condemned, and chastity must be thoroughly reinforced as a crucial element of the priesthood. The only way to achieve that goal is by altering the dominant gay culture found in many seminaries and even some dioceses."

This is bullshit. The only way the Catholic church will be truly reformed lies in its taking the following steps:

1. The Vatican must be accountable to its people, and stop deliberating in utter secret. Its seat on the UN ought to be abolished, as it is not a legitimate state.

2. Women should be allowed to become priests. There is absolutely no ethical, intellectual, or scriptural reason why women should be banned from the priesthood. Until women are allowed within the power ranks of the church, it will be imbalanced by misogynists who abuse their power.

3. Both male and female priests should be allowed to marry and have families. How else can they be expected to reasonably counsel Catholic families?

4. Birth control should be formally sanctioned by the church, instead of forbidden, as it is. It is *criminal and insane* to prohibit the use of condoms in an age of AIDS.

5. All bishops and cardinals who covered up crimes of priests or themselves committed them should be forced to serve PRISON TIME for their aiding and abetting serial child sexual abuse.

This includes Cardinal Law of Boston, and Cardinal Egan of New York, both of whom have been indicted by the FACTS as covering up these crimes of abuse.

6. Civil, not religious, penalties (prison) should apply to all priest molestors, as well as those who aided them.

7. Abortion should be kept legal and should be a matter of personal choice, not of church doctrine. Most Catholics are pro-choice, and Catholic women have abortions in the same number as other religious groups.

8. Divorce should be allowed.

IN SUM, the Catholic Church's medieval sexual repression is at the root of these problems, and its diseased sexual prohibitions must be entirely abolished. Catholics should be allowed to have full healthy sexual lives of their own choice, and this includes the choice to be homosexual if one wishes.

"Reform" will never occur until these fundamental changes are made in the church. All Catholics should speak up and demand that women be allowed into the priesthood, that all priests should be allowed to marry, and that the sick culture of punitive sexual strictures be abolished.

Odd how when given an opportunity to savage gay men, so-called "progresives" and "liberals" parrot back psychobabble and inanity just like their conservative and hate-mongering counterparts.

Since when did "pedophilia" become synonymous with "homosexuality?" And was it pedophelia or pederasty? There is a difference.

Just for the record, in reducing all events of adult-forced trauma upon kids into this particular story ("gay priests"), there is clearly a decided choice to ignore data. If it matters, homsexuals are NOT the most likely abuser in these kinds of abusive (sexually) encounters. No, it would be heterosexuals.

The sexist, homophobic notions that "women tame men" and that "gay men lack all impulse control" are more often than not found in spam mail from some cretin whose big thrill is to send out hate mail to newsgroups.

This child abuse scandal in the Catholic Church is a problem common to all religions. Every once in a while, the press runs a story on some rabbi or preacher abusing children, and that abuse includes rapes of female children, regardless of religion. When the less popular religions were in the forefront, such as the Moonies and Jim Jones' People's Temple (both CIA fronts), we heard how these religious rackets' leaders engaged in sexual abuse of children and women and were generally abusive, arrogant, sleazebags. These parasites have nothing to do; they know the gibberish they are teaching is just that so they do not have to work for a living.

We need to promote science, which means knowledge, no later than age 3, when school should start. Religion must be confined to its religious buildings, and those buildings must be taxed because churches are a business. All schools and hospitals must be secular and public (and most hospitals and schools are secular already, but not enough and most schools are public, but not enough).

It is labor that creates all wealth, not some superstitious being, and everyone who can should contribute their labor, either mental or manual, if not in school , retired or totally disabled. Retirement should be no later than age 60, and the goal should be to lower the retirement age to 50. Such a goal mandates a surplus of wealth, which can only be realized in a society the depends on abundance, namely socialism. Capitalism, with its profit motive, depends upon scarcity to maximize profits. That is why capitalism must be tossed into the dustbin of history; we need socialism now. For that, we need a labor movement, which mandates organizing the unorganized. This religious garbage and all its problems exist where labor is weak. Science prevails where labor is strong, and so does abundance and its benefits.

Now, hear this: 80 % of pedophiles are heterosexuals, not homosexuals, and are found in closed settings like the family and the parish church.
American cardinals are wrong in scapegoating gay priests for the sins and crimes of 'sexual offenders', whether they prey on males or females, whether they sexually assault children, adolescents or grown ups. All of these occur.
Vatican prelates are even worse in that, failing to act upon priests raping women, especially nuns, and sexually abusing men, especially seminarians, they have gone into denial and betrayal, concocting a 'new age' inquisition of gay priests in the United States.
The devil did not make them do that. They are doing it because they are corrupt, bankrupt, uncivil, arrivists, totalitarian, thus, un-Christian.

Even I am not suggesting that all homosexuals are pedophiles or that all pedophiles are homosexual. Priests are geeting all the attention because some lawyer implicated the Church and the Vatican, and we all know how much money is involved.

Can we ignore that the priests in question are mostly homosexual and committed child abuse at least, if not pedophilia? Simply semantics. Should they not be punished because we may bring attention to the fact that homosexuality and pedophilia(child abuse) are both deviate.

We have been forced to accept homosexuality by the media and lawyers, is pedophilia(child abuse) next. I believe it is because someone with power and money(Catholic Church) will get caught and use everthing at their disposal, money and lawyers, to justify immoral, illegal and inhumane behavior.
