KATHMANDU, March 12. — Sixteen Maoists have been killed in a series of encounters with security forces in various parts of Nepal, defence ministry said today.

Heavily armed rebels and troops on a search-and-destroy operation fought a fierce battle in Kalikot district yesterday in which six Maoists were killed.

Four insurgents died at the hands of security personnel in Surkhet district while three others were killed in Salyan district, the defence ministry said in a statement.

Three rebels were killed in encounters in Bardia, Gorkha and Baglung districts, it added.

Fighting erupted in Myagdi district yesterday with the rebels setting off underground bombs to target the security forces leading to casualties onx the Maoists’ side, the statement said adding that their number was not known. The terrorists ambushed a security vehicle injuring two in Bhojpur district yesterday. Five terrorists were arrested during the raids and arms seized in Rasuwa, Panchthar and Doli districts.

Deuba visit: The Nepalese Prime Minister, Mr Sher Bahadur Deuba, will pay a week-long goodwill visit to India beginning on 20 March, sources at the Prime Minister’s Office said.

Six policemen killed, five injured in Maoist ambush

Six policemen assigned escort duties for Speaker of the House of Representatives Taranath Ranabhatt were killed and five others were injured after being ambushed by Maoists at Sanghachowk 40 kms east of the capital Wednesday morning, fresh reports from district headquarters in neighbouring Sindhupalchowk district said.

The injured policemen are undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital. The speaker was not near the ambush site. He cut short the his visit to district headquarters Chautara while driving there after learning of the ambush at Koteshwor in the capital's outskirts.

He was to attend a golden jubilee celebration function of a secondary school in Chatuara. First reports issued by the Home Ministry said five policemen were killed and three others were injured in the ambush.

Government sources said security forces have launched a massive combing operation in the district after the ambush.

Five killed in Nepal landmine explosion

At least five Nepalese policemen have been killed and six others injured in a landmine explosion blamed by the authorities on Maoist rebels.

Officials said the truck the policemen were travelling in set off a landmine at Panichaur in the Sindhupalak district, east of Kathmandu.

The men had been on their way to provide security for a visit by Nepalese government and opposition leaders to a local school.
