Statement by Coretta Scott King On The Trial of Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin
It is critically important that the rights of the accused be fully respected and protected at every phase of this trial. All of the inconsistencies that have emerged in this case must be thoroughly explored and fully investigated, and a clear and unequivocal motive must be established for the verdict to have the credibility needed for closure.

Statement by Coretta Scott King
On The Trial of Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin
I want to express my concern about fairness and justice in the trial of Mr. Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, who is accused in the murder of Deputy Ricky Kinchen and the shooting of Deputy Aldranon English.
While I well understand the need for swift and decisive justice, especially on behalf of the victims' families, who have suffered so much, I feel that it is critically important that the rights of the accused be fully respected and protected at every phase of this trial. All of the inconsistencies that have emerged in this case must be thoroughly explored and fully investigated, and a clear and unequivocal motive must be established for the verdict to have the
credibility needed for closure.
Mr. Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin is entitled to the same presumption of innocence until proven guilty, and impartial justice that is the birthright of every citizen. For justice to be faithfully served, there must be no rush to judgment and the defense must be allowed to present all of its evidence, just as the prosecution must uphold the highest standards in meeting the burden of proof.
This terrible tragedy has already caused much pain and suffering among the loved ones of the victims, and indeed for all who care about the safety of the public servants who protect our community. This tragedy must not be compounded by a flawed trial or rushed verdict. All care must be taken to insure that justice prevails for the victims, the defendant and the community. If these standards are scrupulously observed and reflected in the outcome, then the healing process can begin.
