Darryl Cherney is an opportunistic hustler and shameless self promoter, making several livings off of environmental issues,while contributing not one whit to real environmental action. Check out the Anderson Valley Advertiser, the great weekly from up in Boonville (Mendocino County). The AVA's editor, Bruce Anderson, has done a series of articles and opinion pieces which totally deconstruct Darryl Cherney's phony lawsuit for $20,000,000. Care to back that up a little bit? Here's my check on your references:

A search for "Cherney" on http://www.counterpunch.org leads only to http://www.counterpunch.org/bari.html which says little about Cherney specifically.

Going to http://www.efmedia.org/ gets me only "Welcome to efmedia.org Coming soon!"

A look at http://www.flatlandbooks.com gets us http://www.flatlandbooks.com/bari.html which mentions some of Cherney's (mis)behavior in refusing to openly discuss the case and threatening others who have contrary viewpoints, but does not mention anything about him being and shameless self promoter, making several livings off of environmental issues,while contributing not one whit to real environmental action".

http://www.sonomacountyfreepress.org does not work right now, but looking at http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Awww.sonomacountyfreepress.org+cherney gives me some more letters and articles about his helping obstruct discussion, but nothing about his being "an opportunistic hustler", etc.

Would you care to be more specific with your references? URLs to specific pages would be nice. Thanks.

The poet, Karen Volkman, has said that "... Poetry Daily is another challenge to the myth of the non-existent poetry audience...". She's right: our readers come from every walk of life. They are lawyers, laborers, teachers, military men and women, doctors, scholars, designers, software professionals, students, health care professionals, poets, and heavy equipment operators. They are from small towns, rural areas, cities, all 50 states, and more than 60 countries. What they share is their interest in poetry and a need for news of and access to new poetry.

How are featured poems, books, and journals selected?

Selections are made by Poetry Daily's editors from review copies of books and journals submitted by publishers and editors. Poems are chosen for quality, variety, topical or seasonal interest, and numerous other factors. Although the editors review all submitted books and journals, selection from every source received is not guaranteed.

We suggest that you begin by looking at Poet's Market, a directory of poetry publishers that also contains advice on how to improve the chances that your poetry will be read by editors and that it might be published. Most decent-sized libraries have the book (often on "reserve"), as do many bookstores. You may also order the book through us.

The recent Anderson Valley Advertiser reprint of Cherney's own promotional letter - under the heading "Deadbeat Darryl's Roadshow" - advising dupes of how to get Cherney paid off for appearances at college campuses is must reading. This item appeared earlier this month. Cherney calls his upcoming trial "Earth First! versus the FBI" during his public appearances, but that is entirely misleading. The lawsuit which will go to trial April 8, is actually combined with another case which would award any monies to Cherney and to Judi Bari's estate. The case numbers are 4.91cv1057CW and 4.93cv1057CW. They have to be examined together to see that this is not a case for environmental justice or for a long overdue expose of the FBI, but rather a scheme to privately enrich a small band of pseudo radicals. While it may be a hassle, these cases can both be read at the Clerk of the District Court's office at the Oakland, California Federal Building at 13th and Clay. Be prepared to come early and stay late because this 11 year old lawsuit is massive. Another way to check out the Earth First! media website is to put in the term "Hayduke Rocks" on a search engine. It is maintained by Andy Caffrey of Garberville, California. Caffrey recently had trouble with the server of this site after 9-11, when the server got nervous about "terrorism". Don't know what has happened to the site for the Sonoma County Free Press , have passed along your concerns to both locations. Will try and give clearer directions in any future posts.

Well, Pam, the livings you refer to for Darryl are hardly "living", at least not at the level most environmentalists live that I know. Over the years (about 15), Darryl has worked for the environment almost continuously. You might argue that his work is more inspiration than perspiration, but work, nevertheless. I'll never understand why environmental work seems to be unduly critized when it is compensated.

Cherney seems not to do well with criticism. Darryl was already talking on the radio a month or so ago KZYX, Philo) about appealing the decision when (and if ) the upcoming case is lost. Darryl - you'll only have your self to blame when you try to go into court with your mythology in lieu of facts. I hope all available media are there to cover the April trial in Oakland.

No, it's about money --- TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS, by scum like Cherney who will do anything, lie about everything, and smear anybody who stands in the way of personal enrichment.

I'm a longtime activist who just got to know Darryl Cherney this year and I can tell you from what I've seen, the charges made here against him are a bunch of Bu@#sh it! I have seen him produce rallies and provide countless hours of support to forest activists, and I have seen his music reach people, change their perceptions and raise their spirits. He lives quite sincerely and humbly (I helped him push-start his broken down old Volvo last week; when I shared a meal with him I could tell he would be saying grace just the way he approached the table...) I attended a meeting with Bruce Anderson, Coburn et al trashing him and was not convinced. But even if any of it were true, Bush It! is a great song (I just heard it is #7 on the micropower radio charts) and I think we should all focus now on dumping on the real criminals in this country--very loudly!!

How uneducated are you, do you live in some world that lacks critical thinking? I can't belive people like you spout off. Have you no empathy or any ability to stand back from your small view of the world? Don't you know anything about what this case really is about? Do you have any idea that this is a person you are talking about firstly not some evil thing you seem to have created in your mind, and secondly, he was totally mishandled by the FBI, do you even know any of the facts, I'm not talking about propaganda from either side, I am talking about the cold, immutable facts? This person was treated incredibly injustly and the FBI deserves to have their pants sued off of them for it. Yes, we all have our personality quirks, I am sure you do too, but that does not in anyway change what happened or what is the truth. You are a stupid person and I am glad I do not know you or have to deal with you. People like you inspire me to add heat to the fire because you are so wrong and do not seem to want to make the world into a better, more beautiful, healthier place for anybody.
