I am an environmentalist, and as such, I believe that plants have rights, but people do not. Therefore, using my spurious argument, the tree should respond to this parasite by killing the tree sitter.

Well, they aren't the biggest source of oxygen production. Algae in the oceans do that. But, they do provide a critical role in mitigating local climate, stabilizing the hydrological cycle, and stabilizing the ground. So, when you cut down all the trees in an area there is less water vapor being released in to the air, less heat being absorbed, and more chance of erosion and landsliding.
I just finished looking at Afghanistan's five-year drought. Most of Afghanistan is now desert or semi-arid land, but it used to have lots of forests. these have been cut down over the last decade or so by people looking for fuel and profit from selling the wood. As a consequence, Afghanistan's rainfall has decreased to the point of severe drought.
Yes, I know everyone is tired of hearing about Afghanistan but it serves here to provide a good example of what happens when people clear cut their trees and don't plan for the future.
Do we walk helplessly over the abyss, allowing old white men (who will be dead soon enough anyway) to reap their short term profit at the expense of people who live on the land and will be affected by it? No way! I applaud the people who have the conviction to do these tree sits and forest defense actions.

It's hippie come-and-have-a-blast recruitment efforts like this that have gotten the cult of base camps off the ground. They have created an ambience of bliss uber alles at these camps which draws young folks up into the trees where they are left at the mercy of, frequently, utter morons.

When Beth O'Brien died, these cowards blamed the Forest Service, instead of blaming themselves for not having their shit together. If someone wants to Scuba dive 20 feet below sea level, they have to have a buddy who checks their gear and is personally responsible for their buddy's well being and even their survival. But is this happening 150 feet up in the air? Who was Beth's Buddy, and why didn't he or she make sure she was latched in before she walked across the rope ladder.

Duff, get a fucking life before you kill any more! Duff makes his living videotaping these sitters, and so he recruits more and more of them so he has something to make a movie out of and, therefore, make his own living out of their hides. He now wants you to go see his latest video Treesit, and for you to show it around, not worrying if he if he is feeding a cult that eats its own.

I sympathize to some degree with your assessment of the culture of direct action. I couldn't agree more with your emphasis on safety and preparadness. I entirely support sits as a last ditch (short term?) effort to save trees. Long term action and participation is also needed at all levels to change the laws, policies and public opinion that allow the last ancient trees to fall. I realize that it’s difficult to have thorough training and organization surrounding an under-funded, grassroots and less-than-legal activity yet there needs to be a continued emphasis on safety and responsible behavior. I certainly don’t wish to tell another how to act but to some degree the folks up in the trees are some of the most visible representatives of the North Coast environmental movement. I spent several days recently supporting a sit and I applaud everyone there who has put their ideals into action. Yet, without going into specifics, I was quite concerned with the safety, training and behavior of some of the sitters. If the sitters hope to create a broad base of popular support for this cause they must comport themselves in the most responsible manner possible. I acknowledge the importance of personal freedoms and the reluctance to instate a behavior code yet the community of sitters and the movement at large can be judged by the actions of a few irresponsible individuals.
