IN A SHOW OF SOLIDARITY, IDRISS' MOTHER HAS MADE THE CALL TO USE THE UPCOMING 'JUSTICE FOR IDRISS' COMMUNITY FORUM TO TALK ABOUT THE RECENT HUNTERS POINT INCIDENT.
THE PARENTS OF THE FOUR CHILDREN (AGES 12 AND 13) BRUTALIZED BY SFPD OFFICERS WILL LEAD A CONVERSATION ABOUT HOW THE COMMUNITY CAN TAKE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS HORRIBLE ABUSE.

POLICEWATCH HAS BEEN GETTING MANY, MANY CALLS AND EMAILS IN RESPONSE TO A STORY IN THE BAYVIEW NEWSPAPER ABOUT FIVE CHILDREN WHO WERE BRUTALIZED IN HUNTERSPOINT BY SFPD OFFICERS DURING THE MLK HOLIDAY. THE PARENTS HAVE SHOWN TREMENDOUS COURAGE AND LEADERSHIP AND ARE READY AND ABLE TO LEAD THE COMMUNITY IN EFFORTS TO GET SOME ATTENTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY AROUND THIS ISSUE. BAY AREA POLICEWATCH HAS BEEN SUPPORTING THE FAMILIES WITH MEDIA ADVOCACY AND LEGAL ASSISTANCE. MESHA MONGE-IRIZARRY, IDRISS STELLEY'S MOTHER, HAS SUGGESTED THAT WE TURN THE COMMUNITY FORUM SCHEDULED FOR AN UPDATE ON IDRISS' CASE INTO A JOINT EVENT: AN UPDATE ON IDRISS' CASE AND A PLANNING MEETING FOR ACTION AROUND THE HUNTERS POINT INCIDENT. IT IS THIS KIND OF SOLIDARITY AND UNITY THAT MAKES US STRONG. THESE CASES ARE INTIMATELY LINKED. BOTH INVOLVE UNWARRANTED EXCESSIVE FORCE AGAINST YOUNG PEOPLE OF COLOR. AND IN BOTH SITUATIONS, BRAVE FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE STEPPED UP TO LEAD THE COMMUNITY IN JUSTICE CAMPAIGNS. LET'S FOLLOW THEIR LEAD. COME TO THIS IMPORTANT GATHERING AND SUPPORT BOTH OF THESE STRUGGLES FOR JUSTICE.

see below for information on the Justice for Idriss Campaign:

Idriss Stelley was shot more than 20 times and killed by SFPD officers at the Sony Metreon Theater on June 13th, 2001. The officers knew that Idriss was having a psychiatric crisis and needed help. But Idriss is dead, and there is no evidence to suggest that officers needed to use deadly force. Within weeks of the killing, following the leadership of Idriss' mother and fiance, the community mobilized to get Justice for Idriss. Our efforts have included local, national and international education and advocacy. In January, we won a major victory with a unanimous SF Board of Supervisors resolution calling for all SFPD Officers to receive crisis intervention training. But the struggle continues. It has been 8 months since Idriss' murder and we have yet to hear from the four known witnesses to the shooting.
We will not let the SFPD continue their shameless cover-up any longer!

The incident that took place on Dr. Martin Luther's Day where children were punished in all unfairness before their parents and civil adults - should send a clear signal that acts such as this will and should not be tolerated in any civilized society.

The higher authorities and that includes Da Mayor and the Office of Citizens Complaints should take all measures to heal the community.

The officer/officers involved in this incident where children were beaten should be sent for remedial tranining. Also, they should be put on Administrative Leave and not allowed to work in the Bayview Hunters Point. As was suggested at the Public Meeting held on February 14, 2002 in future all Officers reporting to Bayview Hunters Point should be presented to a Citizens Committee from Bayview Hunters Point for approval. Such a measure - would and will in good measure stop any racial profiling as has been happening for a long time in the Bayview Hunters Point Area.

In times of crisis - we should turn to the Police for help and not run away from them. In times of crisis - anyone who is in danger should be able to trust the Police. As citizens who abide by the law - we should be able to feel safe in the presence of any police officer. At the public meeting held on February 14, 2002 at Hunters Point - the constituents made it very clear that they did not feel safe at the hands of the Police.

I call upon the Mayor, the Supervisors, the Police Chief, the OCC, and the Police Commissioners to please order the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) to conduct themselves in a manner where children and adults are respected and treated in a fair manner. Police brutality in all forms must stop - more so when it involves children as was the case at Hunters Point.

The City of San Francisco was named after a Saint who is well known for his Compassion. The City and County of San Francisco is a City that knows how. I call upon the authorities to reach out and help the victims. Reach out and help the community. Put in place written mandates - where " no brutality on children or adults' in tolerated. Zero tolerance.

Towards this end if I can in any way be of assistance - I request the Police Chief and Commander Greg Suhr to contact me. At this time the mothers, fathers, and relatives of the victims - are waiting for some concrete signal from the SFPD - to bring about some healing.

Dr. Martin Luther King died so that many of us from all diverse communities may contribute our best to the United States and to the world. He died so that there would be no racial profiling. He stood for non-violence and always remind all - that love would over come hate. Let the City that knows how - lead the way. Let the children learn to be good citizens and not fear those who are supposed to protect them. Let the children trust those so that they may grow to contribute their best to our City and the world. Let us all learn to live as children of God in Peace.

I don't think these cops need remedial training or administrative leave. I think they need to find their asses in the unemployment line ---- if not in a jail cell for violating the civil rights of young Black people. Why are we content with the scraps when this bullshit with the police has been going on for hundreds of years? I am ready for a real fight against police brutality, and a real fight against police. We dont need them in our neighborhoods.

"Bay Area Hall of Shame":

We are going to publicize, mass mailing and flyers, the names of cops who have wrongfully disabled or killed our brothers and sisters in the Bay Area since 01-01-01, and demand their transfer from their respective precincts. Quite a conservative request, given the extent of racial profiling, don't you think?
