Palestine2/15-18: Palestine Solidarity Movement Nat'l Student Conf.
NATIONAL STUDENT CONFERENCE OF THE PALESTINE SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT. NATIONAL STUDENT CONFERENCE OF THE PALESTINE SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT.
February 15-18, 2002 Berkeley, California Students for Justice in Palestine encourages interested students and activists to preregister online for the National Student Conference of the Palestine Solidarity Movement. Your preregistration is encouraged as it helps us to organize the conference more smoothly and be prepared for a more accurate number of attendees. In the wake of the all-out war now being waged on Palestine, it is more imperative than before that we in the United States coordinate our efforts to work for justice and human rights for the Palestinian people. Just as students in the United States played a key role in working for an end to South African apartheid in the 1980s, so we are now taking on the role of spearheading the movement against Israeli apartheid today. For this reason, Students for Justice in Palestine is coordinating a conference of campus-based activists. This conference is primarily focused for student activists, but community-based activists are welcome to participate. This will be a hands-on conference that allows us to share our experience as activists and participate in organizing a national movement. The conference program will include hands-on organizing workshops, large-group plenary sessions and panels, and organizing sessions for students and community-based activists. The Guild of Students (student union) of the University of Birmingham is attempting to censor publicity for a talk on Palestine - 13th May 2003.
Guild Vice-President has taken offence at references to the Palestinian struggle for freedom.
The offending words are a direct quote from Nelson Mandela:
“Palestinians are not struggling for a ‘state’ but for freedom, liberation and equality, just like we were struggling for freedom in South Africa... Israel has deprived millions of Palestinians of their liberty and property. It has perpetuated a system of gross racial discrimination and inequality. It has systematically incarcerated and tortured thousands of Palestinians, contrary to the rules of international law. It has, in particular, waged a war against a civilian population, in particular children.”
