A WILD PREDICTION about the SPORTS WORLD (and 9-11)

by the Agony of da Feet
My wild prediction:
I predict that some people will start suggesting in next few days that the Super Bowl was deliberately fixed for the Patriots to win--all as part of the propaganda for America's New Terror War.

And I am not talking about leftist or Indymedia type of people, who have already been (half-Jokingly) suggesting this idea on the Newswire.

I am talking about maintream people who will float this as a rumor. This in turn will cause the mainstream (sports) media outlets like ESPN or CNN/SI to pick up the story and dismiss it as wild conspiracy theory.

I make this prediction first because the Patriots were something like 14 points underdogs, and not only staged one of the greatest upsets in Super Bowl history (as one CNN achor put it) but also did so in a dramatic "Hollywood-style" ending.

Moreover, something kind of similar to this scenario has already happened. After race car drive Dale Earnhardt was killed in a car crash last year, his son Dale Earnhardt Jr. later won the first race subsequently staged at the same race course his father was killed at.

This caused many fans--and even other race car drivers--to suggest that the race was fixed for Dale Jr. to win, for sentimental reasons.

The mainstream media picked up on this story, and of course were indignant at such a insinuation. Nothing was ever proven however.

Another analogous similar example is Cal Ripken Jr. homering in his last All-Star game appearance last year. Some people suggested that the pitcher deliberately "grooved one" to Cal in order to let him hit a homerun. Indeed, the pitcher made a postgame joke that he "gave Cal a retirement present" with that pitch--thus further fueling conspiracy theorizing. And again the Media was indignant and quick to discredit the story.

I could be dead wrong. On the other hand, I could be right. Just wait and see..

by bernie kosar
absolutely!! this is brilliant.

other points of interest: there was rioting at the last cleveland browns game on a really shady call, which effectively knocked them out of playoff wildcard chances.

also, the questionable call which put the patriots in the super bowl at the raiders game.

also -- the AFC never wins the super bowl!

now this is some conspiracy theories that i can get behind. cleveland browns fans know how corrupt the NFL can be, with mobster Art Modell selling out the team which has the most heart of any other in the entire league!!

"-- the AFC never wins the super bowl! "

NOT TRUE. The dencver broncos won it 2 years in a row
by Marselo
first off, the USA national soccer team just won the regional championship, CONCACAF "Gold Cup", against the tournament favorite Costa Rica. the US won 2-0, but for some reason the C.R. squad didn't play up to its potential. with this win, the US team will be able to play in another international tournament, the Federations Cup, played by the top teams in every continent next year.

second... now that the Patriots have won, i can't wait to see the White House ceremony with Bush receiving the Patriots' #1 jersey... get it? "Number 1 Patriot" = George W. =]

and y'all thought the military 3hr informecial ended there!? next stop: Salt Lake City! 800mill peeps saw the SB, most of those abroad, now the infomercial goes on for another 16 days internationally! my UHF don't pick up NBC in S.F., yey!

sports fan in da struggle,

Ridge here. The patriots win shows that God is on the side of the United States of America. You're either with us or against us. Those who are with us will be showered with gifts. Those who are against us will be classified as "battlefield detainees," and sent to re-education camps in Iowa. Any questions? Shut up.

I'm sorry, the *RAIDERS* are the people's team???? give me a break!! the cleveland browns are the people's team, 50 years of class warfare against steelworkers and all they have left is their miserable, non-winning football team. alternatively, green bay is the league's only communally-owned football team, so perhaps they are the people's team. anyway, cleveland browns fans are the only ones who understand that sports & rioting go hand-in-hand

by Sports Are For Losers
I love football!!! Let's drink beer!!! The Boston Bruins are the best football team ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by sports
oh sorry, football is just a working class thing. i know that has nothing to do with your radical politics.
by hazardous taste
To whoever it is, who's doing the "Office of Homeland Security" schtick: That's some funny shit. Thanks for the laughs :)

The gag about "Rummy", that's on another thread, was particularly funny ... if the networks weren't so hung-up on being patriotically correct these days, I'd warn you that some of you're material might get ripped by a latenight TV comedian, or a show like SNL (way back in the good ol' days)
by Nikkos
Everyone just watches football for the reason you stated, peer pressure. You started watching because someone you know got you into it. Sports have such gravity and are watched by so many people that those people with their enormous gravity suck in all humans near their orbit.

Do not get sucked into the vacuous hole.
by aaron
Nikkos is expressing his views. One could disagree with him, but most working class people respect pull-no-punches honesty

What working people generally don't like is transparent pandering, which is what you're proposing Nessie.
by anarchist
I dont think Nessie is doing that, I think he is trying to explain it to you in terms that might make sense to you, as a leftoid weirdo who cant like sports. Since 90% of the world likes or participates in some kind of sport and dont share your misanthropic hatred of physical games, maybe you should pay attention. Is the "leftist cultural elite" really this snobbish???
by Nikkos
What she is doing is little more than bullshit politicial correctness. Can you compile a list of things that offend you, so I can spend my afternoon ignoring that list?

By vacous hole I meant watching tv so much is a waste of time.

"How, after having insulted them all in public, can you possibly expect any of them to ever take seriously anything else you might say, let alone take it into their hearts? You can't. They now think you both rude and a fool. They’re not going to listen to you. How many rude fools do you listen too?"

If someone is so close minded that me stating what I think, would induce them to not want to hear any of my views, why would I want to explain any complex concept to such a dim person. This is so absurd that I think you said it to provoke a reaction.

" Besides, unless you know more NBA stats than the worker you're talking to, you can't criticize Michael Jordan's relationship with Nike, and be taken seriously. (S)he will simply consider you ignorant, and write off whatever you say."

Why the hell would you need to talk about Michael Jordan to criticize Nike? You suck at this trolling thing, you are supposed to be more subtule.

"She dragged me to a superbowl party where everybody but me had a Ph.D. I was a grease monkey. It suddenly dawned on me who was the dumb guy that day."

Again these two sentences have the same paucity of logic as the other snippets. So watching sports was dumb and now that someone with a paper from an insititution that sells a reputation for being educated watches it, you realize that you were the dumb one for thinking sports were dumb.

I think I will frame a diploma on my wall declaring myself the smarterest man of the world! Then because I say watching sports is dumb, I can use the argument from authority that most smarterest man in the world thinks you are wrong! Dur!

"No wonder you, and all the beliefs you hold most dear, are trapped in an incestuous and marginalized milieu."

Troll me a line. Really troll it to me.

by aaron
I don't hate sports. I spent most of my time growing up playing baseball, soccer, football, basketball. I was a pitcher in high school and also played on the lacrosse team.

What I think is absurd is the idea that people who don't much like sports or find the hype surrounding them boring need to feign interest or silence themselves on the matter in order to be effective radicals. Personally, I find we are most sucessful when we are real and honest, not when we are calibrating our moves to appeal to some bogus populist conception of what the "people" are really about. This is the same logic that had leftists in the 70s outfitting themselves in denim and plaid and smoking Winston cigarettes. People see through it and don't respect it.

In saying this, I'm not arguing that sports or interest in sports is a bad thing. And, in fact, a sports wrap-up on indymedia could get interesting and probably pretty amusing -- that is, if it isn't used as a platform to shout how "with the people" we are for covering the Raiders or whatever.

by Nikkos
"Since 90% of the world likes or participates in some kind of sport and dont share your misanthropic hatred of physical games, maybe you should pay attention. Is the "leftist cultural elite" really this snobbish???"

First of all I am an anarchist. I do not innately hate sports and thanks for creating strawman arguments you dollop. Pretty easy to knock down strawmen, huh?

I have no problem with playing sports. I have a problem with all these people who watch sports, just sitting in front of the tv all day watching sports because their friends do.

People need to be questioning to be radicalized. Nessie's assertation that my statement will alienate people is absurd(troll). There are millions of apathetic people who just watch tv, believe almost everything the media and government says, think that education is going to a school or college so that you can get a piece of paper. There is no easy way you can make such people into radicals by being a jackass and pretending to be sympathetic to their watching sports, such people need to change their whole way of thinking before they would be able to become radicals and there is no easy way to do that and me watching sports all day is certainly not gonna change this.

And its funny of accusing me of leftist snob when you seem to be an anarchist snob yourself. I thought that politically correctness was a liberal phenomen. You also seem to try to leverage this liberalism about watching sports to try to attack me, for being an elitist leftist snob, just like the real liberals do.
by Nikkos
I think Aaron's view that Nessie is being conscending and trying to feign interest is spot on. That sounds more accurate than my assertion that he was trolling.

"How, after having insulted them all in public, can you possibly expect any of them to ever take seriously anything else you might say, let alone take it into their hearts? You can't. They now think you both rude and a fool. They’re not going to listen to you. How many rude fools do you listen too?"

If that is what you think of people who watch sports you are actually insulting them far more than I ever have by insisting that they are such simpletons.

"Besides, unless you know more NBA stats than the worker you're talking to, you can't criticize Michael Jordan's relationship with Nike, and be taken seriously. (S)he will simply consider you ignorant, and write off whatever you say."

Another denigration. Perhaps we should put posters up about the most hyped sports teams to gain new recruits? They obviously cannot understand the real issues so lets ignore them and talk about what a God on the court Jordan is.

if you hadn't heard about this one it's worth reading about:
by Trek

Yeah a sports page might be interesting-- i personally like basketball. I think Adonal Foyle on the Warriors is a left winger.

Bono at the Super Bowl at the end of his performance at half time opened his jacket to reveal the American flag. This nationalist pandering (by an Irishman!) sucked and wont be bad for his record sales.

Michael Moore is clearly an example of a phony panderer. He can stick his baseball cap up his ass!

----------------------------------------------------------
What Makes Mainstream Media Mainstream

"The real mass media are basically trying to divert people. Let them do something else, but don’t bother us (us being the people who run the show). Let them get interested in professional sports, for example. Let everybody be crazed about professional sports or sex scandals or the personalities and their problems or something like that. Anything, as long as it isn’t serious. Of course, the serious stuff is for the big guys. "We" take care of that." -Noam Chomsky

I think Noam hit the fence post in the ground with that analysis.

The media tries a lot to get the peoples attention focused on stuff like the Presidental Sex Scandals during Clintons reign. If you remember the media joked that he used the war bombings of Iraq and Yugoslavia to draw away public attention away from the sex scandal, when in reality it was the reverse. The US government invented so many lies about Slobodan, in Yugoslavia minorities had even more reperestantion than they do in the States. In most of Europe the truth starting to get about how Slobodan was really a good statesman and was a victim of NATO and in Germany, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Greece there was mass protest against the NATO war against Yugoslavia.

Also if you noticed in America people are really politicially apathetic, they are not informed about what Washington is doing, in a large part because the American media funnels their attention into sports and other places. The media creates a psuedo reality for them, that makes them think things are much better off than they are and most people do not ever have to challenge this fake vision of the world. I really think tv as we know is a bad thing. I think it is obvious that the big sports teams help to create a fanbase and the hype surronding sports just like how Nike and Gap try to create hype and demand for their products.

by nssie
Why did Cleveland Browns fans nearly riot over that bad call last season? It seems more like something that legend has it the Raider's fans would be more likely to do. Bad calls happen all the time. They're one of the variables of the game, like injuries or the weather. Usually, though, they don't spark a hail of missiles. What made that particular call different? What else was happening in Cleveland that might have contributed? Why do some people in Cleveland still defend what happened?
by glong
Sure, it was all planned, all rigged, and how clever that they even planned for a 48 years field goal to make it real exciting, knowing all the time that that kick would sail right through the goal posts.
