Judy Greenspan at vigil for Stephen Wayne Anderson
a few minute speech by prison/hiv activist Judy Greenspan at the vigil for Stephen Wayne Anderson, executed by the state on January 28
Listen now:
A vigil for Stephen Wayne Anderson, executed by the state for the murder of Elizabeth Lyman in 1980, was held at San Quentin State Prison. Upwards of 500 people gathered there, a mix of individuals and groups including Lesbian and Gay Insurrection, Death Penalty Focus, various religious organizations, and the ubiquitous Socialist Action.
Most of the evening was solemn, with speakers reading poems written by Stephen Wayne Anderson and musicians strumming guitars, along with prayer circles and scattered chants of "Gray Davis you can't hide, we charge you with genocide," the larger connections between state murder on the individual level and global capitalism and the racist application of the death penalty were largely ignored.
Judy Greenspan was the only speaker to touch upon the subject, so I thought her words were valuable to record........
