Richmond homelessness actions report

by rgreens FWD:
Update on situation with Richmond City Council. Please help with actions. Next one is Sunday Feb 3 at 1:30 pm. (see below)
Virginia Harrison just spoke to the city council
during the Public Forum part of their meeting .
She was very good and expressed the deep
feelings of concern we all are having about this.
Well done Virginia....

Here are some observations:

1. They felt obliged to respond and discuss
the issue rather than to ignore it all together.
( even when the rules of the city council
sate that there will be no response nor
dialogue with people in the Public Forum)

The city manager stated that in response to
"certain demonstrations taken place lately"
and "e-mails received" they are preparing
with the Public Information officer, Angela
Jones, a package that will describe how
much Richmond does for the homeless.

The city is preparing a P.R. response.
When it comes we will dismantle it.

Mayor Anderson stated that :
a) She hopes that package gets distributed
b) The city gives half a million for the homeless (NOT TRUE)
c) Ultimately it is the county who is responsible
about the homeless ( not the city)
d) She is calling for a "summit" in April
e) The tapes are there to be reviewed to show
that many discussions were hold on the topic
before the desicion.

2) THEY ARE RUNNING TOWARDS THE SUMMIT
COVERING THEMSELVES WITH THE FEW MISERABLE
THINGS DONE FOR THE HOMELESS AND
WITHOUT ADDRESSING OUR MAIN POINT OF
CONTENTION: REGARDLESS of what the city does
for the homeless CRIMINALIZATION is not acceptable.

3) They know that that is their weak point and they are trying
to avoid talking about that, because they hate to have to revert
themselves.

4) For the next speakers: It is important to hammer this point:
REGARDLESS of what the city says it does for the homeless,
REGARDLESS of anything else
CRIMINALIZATION IS UNACCEPTABLE.
CRIMINALIZATION OF THE HOMELESS GOES
AGAINST OUR HUMAN CONCIENCE AND ETHICS.

I hope you all see and are proud OF THE GOOD IMPACT
on the "perpetrators" of this ordinance THAT THE PROTEST,
LETTERS, PUBLIC STATEMENTS are having.

We have not wan yet, but WE WILL.
Do you think they will want to put up with nine months of
pressure from us, at every public event, at any opportunity,
when with less than a month of pressure they are already
running for cover?

We got a winer. Kept the faith. Keep the letters going.
We will win.
