Eyewitness from Buenos Aires

An evening with Elena, a working class
activist and socialist who is active in the Asambleas Populares
(Peoples Assemblies). Don’t miss this rare
opportunity to meet with a participant in the struggle in
Argentina. The rebellion in Argentina that has toppled two
governments since mid-December.

From Seattle to Genoa, people around the world are
challenging the right of the International Monetary Fund,
and other agencies of capitalist globalization to run over
the whole planet. Today in Argentina that fightback has
become a mass movement, led by the workers of Argentina.

The Argentina Support Committee cheers on the fight of the
workers in Argentina in their life and death struggle
against the imposition of the IMF-mandated "reforms", which
are in reality “give-backs” like a 13% wage cut back, union
contracts voided and reimposed, the privatizations of
nationalized industries and pensions. Now Argentina is on
the brink of a revolutionary struggle between labor and
capital. The widening of the class struggle throughout
Argentina has also meant that capital's lieutenants of
labor, the entrenched union bureaucracy and political
reformists are working hard to limit struggle to electoral
campaigns, push militant actions to the most "acceptable"
and merely symbolic levels. The question of power looms in
the background. Whose Argentina? The Bosses or Workers?

We will present a video about the militant unemployed
working class struggle, titled “Piqueteros.” This video released
in late 2001, gives background on the worker fight back
around Argentina against the IMF-mandated labor laws. This video is in Spanish and will be translated during the presentation for the English-speaking audience.

The Argentina Solidarity Committee welcomes participation of individuals and groups interested in working on upcoming events and activities. The ASC maintains the only web site in English on the Argentina struggle, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Argentina_Solidarity/. We are planning a conference on Argentina Solidarity and we have worked to coordinated solidarity here in Los Angeles and Detroit. We work with groups in New Zealand, Finland, Sweden and the Ukraine.
