MLK noticed that there were more blacks in jail in Mississippi than registered black voters.. this was no accident.. to maintain white political hegemony in the South.. nine days later, March 7, 1965, a day that came to be known as <I>Bloody Sunday.</I> About 650 unarmed marchers on their way from Selma to Birmingham were attacked by police wielding tear gas, clubs and bullwhips at the Edmund Petus Bridge.. <IMG SRC="http://www.flashpoints.net/images/196503.jpg" align=left hspace=4 BORDER=1 HEIGHT=185 WIDTH=200 ALT="Edmun Petus Bridge">
the assault, recorded by the national media, left 70 marchers hospitalized and another 70 injured.. finally, the third march from Selma, 50,000 marched.. arrived in Birmingham, March 25, 1965, the most spectacular event in the civil rights movement (link2).. Laura: I've done some work for the past ten years when I got out of the military.. I've lived in Central America.. just visited East Timor (mojones).. Maxxam/Pacifica Lumber logging old growth in the headwaters, in spite of buy out plan<br><FONT COLOR=#cc6600>-</FONT><FONT COLOR=#ffff99>00:30</font> <FONT COLOR=#ffcc00>Dennis:</FONT> .. MLK noticed that there were more blacks in jail in Mississippi than registered black voters.. this was no accident.. to maintain white political hegemony in the South.. nine days later, March 7, 1965, a day that came to be known as <I>Bloody Sunday.</I> About 650 unarmed marchers on their way from Selma to Birmingham were attacked by police wielding tear gas, clubs and bullwhips at the Edmund Petus Bridge.. <IMG SRC="http://www.flashpoints.net/images/196503.jpg" align=left hspace=4 BORDER=1 HEIGHT=185 WIDTH=200 ALT="Edmun Petus Bridge">
the assault, recorded by the national media, left 70 marchers hospitalized and another 70 injured.. finally, the third march from Selma, 50,000 marched.. arrived in Birmingham, March 25, 1965, the most spectacular event in the civil rights movement (link2).. MLK later said, "We marched through a swamp of poverty, ignorance, race hatred.." ..about Karl Bencurt, march marshall.. handed his tape recorder to a total stranger who laid down a great impromtu color commentary.. audio starts: ".. at least twenty thousand people in this procession.. in the lead Dr. Martin Luther King with assistant head of the United Nations.. the whole vangard protected by march marshals.. plus five army jeeps full of soldiers, rifles at the ready.. looking for snipers.. <IMG SRC="http://www.flashpoints.net/images/MLK101.jpg" align=right BORDER=0 HEIGHT=140 WIDTH=125 ALT="Martin Luther King, Jr. artwork"> behind them a car with chief U.S. Marshall Jim McShane.. and the assistant U.S. attorney general.. Laura: I've done some work for the past ten years when I got out of the military.. I've lived in Central America.. just visited East Timor (mojones)..
