NORTHERN CALIFORNIA SPEAKING TOUR FOR MUMIA'S ATTORNEY,
ELIOT GROSSMAN

Mumia's defense -- please post & reprint:

WEST COAST SPEAKING TOUR FOR MUMIA

ELIOT GROSSMAN, Member of Mumia Abu-Jamal's new legal defense team, will be speaking at the events listed below, in Seaside, Santa Cruz, San Jose, San Francisco and Oakland, California, on December 6th, 7th and 8th.

Mumia Abu-Jamal is a former member of the Black Panther Party, a MOVE supporter, a journalist and author, a union member, an anti-imperialist and anti-racist fighter -- and a class-war political prisoner. He has been on death row in Pennsylvania for 20 years for a crime he didn't commit. His grossly unfair conviction in 1982 has been condemned the world over. Now there is a confession by the real killer, one Arnold Beverly, which has been upheld by a lie detector test. The confession corroborates other
evidence in the case, as well as pointing to a vast police conspiracy, but the courts, state and federal, have so far refused to hear it!

In July of this year, Federal District Judge William H. Yohn denied a motion by the defense lawyers for a deposition of the Arnold Beverly confession, and on November 21 State Court Judge Pamela Dembe also rejected consideration of the confession, and denied Mumia a new state appeal
hearing.

These rulings are a statement by the system that innocence is no defense if you are considered a threat to the rich and powerful! They bring Mumia steps closer to lethal injection, and they are a warning to all of us.

The Anti-Terrorism & Effective Death Penalty Act was cited as a key component in these rulings, but the real reason is that the system wants to shut Mumia up forever! Mumia has been the victim of gross
censorship--his radio commentaries being yanked at the last minute from planned broadcast
on National Public Radio at the behest of the Fraternal Order of Police a few years ago. And the system wants to keep covered up one of the biggest police corruption scandals in US history!

In a recent submission to the courts, Mumia's new lawyers pointed to the direct and chilling parallel between Jamal's case and the 1920's case of Sacco and Vanzetti, two innocent Italian immigrants with anarchist sympathies who were executed in an atmosphere of anti-immigrant prejudice,
after a state court judge refused to grant a new trial despite the fact that the real murderer confessed and exonerated the two men of any involvement in the crime. Today's witchhunt is the "war on terrorism," and today's Sacco & Vanzetti is Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Should today's war against the poor, immigrants, workers and dissidents be allowed to kill this innocent, and heroic political activist, while keeping its own horrific crimes concealed under a veil of secrecy and censorship? WE SAY NO! Mumia's struggle has been supported by longshore workers,
who shut down West Coast ports, and teachers who have held teach-ins in several cities; as well as by labor federations, unions and working people everywhere. But now we must redouble our efforts, as the threat on Mumia's life--and against the rights of all of us--grows stronger.

Mumia Abu-Jamal must be released immediately!
