On a site where protests against Apartheid South Africa were once held, people
gathered to demand an end to US government and University of California
support of Israeli Apartheid.

In observance of International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
close to 100 people gathered on UC Berkeley campus to take action.
The action took the form of an informational picket.

Those passing through Sather Gate, a busy midday route for students, were
invited to read the long list of United Nations Resolutions Against Israel: http://www.stanford.edu/group/MSAN/palestine/resolutions.html
The list was displayed dramatically - on a single sheet of paper over forty feet
long.

People lined up on both sides of Sather Gate holding signs and banners, to
educate passersby on the plight of the Palestinians and to Demand:
End Israeli Apartheid
No Investment in Occupation
UC (University of California) Regents Divest from Israel
Stop US Aid to Israel
End the Occupation
Palestinians are People - Israel is an Apartheid State…Divest.

“We are out here today because we refuse to be accessories to Israel’s war
crimes. The US government gives $10 million American tax dollars to
Israel every day. Israel spends our money on: weapons to kill and maim
indigenous Palestinian civilians…bulldozers to destroy homes and
farmland…materials to build illegal colonies (called “settlements”)
connected by “Jews only” highways (“bypass roads”) in illegally occupied
Palestine (“the territories”).” - Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP)

Wake up Americans. Put an end to this costly parasite on american politik.
by Baruch
You mean America should support the Palestinians who were dancing and celebrating when 5000 civilians were massacred by Arab terrorists at the WTC.
by the burningman
To the students who held this rally - you are true heros. Brave, righteous and decent. Remember the mass of the world supports you and the mass of americans will too as they learn the truth about the occupation.

Palestine will win! I love you all.
by Que' Roule Dier (mediacollective [at] students.sou.edu)
thanks for being courageous enough to stand up.
all americans should realize what israel is doing with the 6 billion we give them every year.
these attacks in the last few days: amazing.
is the complacency and ignorance of americans really so etched into our societal fabric that we refuse to recognize the oppression?
do folks here just not care?
by B Bernstein (bbernstein68 [at] yahoo.com)
Congratulations young students at Berkeley, for standing up for what you believe - Support of a corrupt dictatorship terrorist state over a democratic free state. Remember, while you protest in complete safety and freedom against your government, you would be imprisoned or executed if you did the same in most Arab countries.

The Palestinian people deserve to be liberated from a regime led by Yassir Arafat that breeds fear, hate and terror. The Palestinian people, as well as you, are victims of propaganda, a propaganda whose source is Yassir Arafat\'s regime and the western media.

Continue on, brave students. Remind the rest of us how much freedom we have here in America and in Israel.
by the burningman
Right, complete freedom. That's why it's against the law to raise funds for any of the main palestinian factions in the US. This, while billions are given to Israel. Our schools rot and we send F-16s to Israel. Fuck you.

And in the meantime, over a thousand Muslims have been arrested and detained without charge or with dubious charges in hidden prisons without legal aid.

You are a fascist.
by weibing
students should protest to have the US stay out of either side of this issue.
Neither side are the 'good guys'.
by SF Yuppie
Given every chance, Palestinians have uniformly chosen to do nothing else but attack Israel and plot the murder of Jews.

Those who claim that billions are given to Israel by the US should also understand that the PA enjoys the same thing. They don't build schools, they teach hatred, they buy weapons, and they turn young people into walking bombs.

Time to stop fucking around with them.

burningman, go heave yourself throat-first from the top of a high cliff onto a flaming pile of spiked cocks, you murder-loving, unstable, imbalanced faggot.
by disgusted-ex-liberal
burningman December 20 2001, Thu, 12:46pm:

"Fuck You."

Exactly what we have come to expect from the lefty Hate Our Own Country First crowd. Obfuscate the facts, treat your own propagandization as truth (even after someone succinctly points it out to you), and question the motives of anyone with whom you disagree. Then when all else fails, resort to name calling and obscenities.

Show us your education, Berkeley!.
by D.Remini
The Palenstinians need to be bombed into oblivian.
That goes double for all fanatical muslims.
by Tired of these children
I agree, let's stop tax funding these sophmoric students and their silly little games. Let them protest on their own time and money.

by Patchpics
All palestinians are terrorists at heart. Thier actions have lead me to believe that they forfieted their right to live many years ago. The other Arab nations put down Israel, but are quick to refuse the palestinians any terrirtory. The eradication of Palestinians would be but a step toward world peace! I am not so sure that those who support Palestine shouldn't be considered terrorists, thus enemies of America, and treated accordingly.
by ronny jonjon
the level of vitriol spewed out in these comments, and on sf indymedia in general, is simply amazing. how can so many speak without offering even the slightest bit of reasoning or evidence to back up their words. most people will listen if you speak somewhat calmly and don't just attack them personally. well, that is if you're actually trying to convey some message other than "i'm so irrationaly that i can't hold a conversation so i'll just call you names as if i were five."

i mean, come on, there are ton of trolls on this site, or perhaps just a few with several nicks, and hardly any of them have anything to say other than "fuck off faggot."

at least with jon-type folks there is a discussion of some sort.

to claim that all palestinians are terrorists is just ludicrous. to claim that all israelis are zionists is ludicrous too. arafat is a power-hungry sell-out and sharon is a murderous thug operating under the rule of thugs led by the united states. governments are basically just legal, organized bodies of crime.

the israeli people need to rise up against their government, to stop being complicit in the colonialist government they implicitly support. palestinians need to get rid of arafat and create true, direct democracy so that they have a say in the issues that affect their lives.

and the US, fuck, people here need to learn that they're living off the fruits of imperialism, and that our privilege in being able to ignore violent conflicts in the world will come to a screeching halt as soon as this "war on terrorism" escalates beyond control, and more and more desperate people rise up to oppose us.

"Yes, the existence of a separate Palestinian identity serves only tactical purposes. The founding of a Palestinian state is a new tool in the continuing battle against Israel ...
-- Zuheir Muhsin, late Military Department head of the PLO and member of its Executive Council, Dutch daily Trouw, March 1977

"Kill a settler every day.... Shoot at settlers everywhere.... Woe to you if you let them reach their homes safely or travel safely on the roads.... I want you to kill as many settlers as possible.... Do not pay attention to what I say to the media, the television or public appearances. Pay attention only to the written instructions that you receive from me."
- Yasser Arafat, addressing his people at a public event, July 2001

"The suicide bombers of today are the noble successors of their noble predecessors...the Lebanese suicide bombers, who taught the US Marines a tough lesson in [Lebanon]... These suicide bombers are the salt of the earth, the engines of history...They are the most honorable [people] among us..." [Al Hayat Al Jadida Sept. 11, 2001].

The Achille Lauro Hijacking

The morning of Oct 7, four members of the Palestine Liberation Front, or PLF, walked out of cabin 82, and into the main dining room, where a small number of passengers were. The majority of the passengers were off the ship in Alexandria, Egypt, on a tour of the area when the terrorists attacked. Walking into the room, they began firing their weapons at random, wounding two people before stopping. Armed with AK-47s, grenades, and handguns, the four terrorists gathered up the 320 crewmen and 80 remaining passengers, and began seperating them by nationality. The American and British hostages were placed together and surrounded with oil drums, which the terrorists threatened to light on fire. They then ordered the ships Captain to set sail for the Syrian port of Tartus.

The demands of the terrorist were simple. They wanted the release of 50 Palestinians being held by the Israeli government. Negotiations were already being held Tuesday morning. The Syrian government, after having consulted the American and Italian governments, denied the Achille Lauro permission to dock at the port in Tartus. This is when the terrorists took action.

The terrorists took Leon Klinghoffer, a 69 year old retired Jewish businessman from New York, who was confined to a wheelchair after being partially paralyzed by two strokes, and threw him overboard, after having shot him in the head and chest. The terrorists then ordered the ship to sail for the ships original destination of Port Said in Egypt, since attempts to dock in Cyprus were also met with denial.

Leon Klinghoffer's body was found several days later, when it washed up on a Syrian beach.

August 21, 1997 (18th of Av) marks the 68th anniversary of the 1929 riots that plagued Eretz Yisrael. Jews were murdered throughout the land, but the worst slaughter was in Hebron.

What was the relationship between the then Jewish Community of Hebron with their Arab neighbors? The Arabs spoke, aside from Arabic, Yiddish and Ladino, and that the Jewish women would leave their small children with the Arab neighbors when they went to the market.
The Jews and Arabs were very accustomed to each other - the Jewish Quarter of Hebron having been founded some 450 years previously.

What happened over those fateful 24 hours. Here are portions of "The Scroll of Blood" excerpted and translated from "The Book of Hebron" by Oded Avisar. [ ] denote editor's note.

Members of the Hagana arrive in Hebron from Jerusalem. They requested to leave weapons in Hebron, in the bank, so as not to be found and confiscated by the British police. [The Jews in Hebron refused the weapons. The responded by saying that they had nothing to worry about.
Hebron's Arabs were their friends. They had no need for weapons.]

Friday 17 Av 5689

At 2:30 in the afternoon a young Arab was seen on a motorcycle, arriving from Jerusalem.
He announced to all Hebron's Arabs that the blood of thousands of Jerusalem Arabs had been shed. He called on Hebron's Muslims'sto seek revenge. Hebron's Arabs were noticeably excited, especially after tens of automobiles from Jerusalem began arriving in Hebron, notifying the Arabs of riots in Jerusalem. Arabs called for revenge from rooftops of cars.
[In 1923 the British had appointed Amin el-Hussainei (Feisal's granddaddy) as grand Mufti of Jerusalem. (He later planned, with Hitler in Berlin, the "final solution to the Jewish problem in Eretz Yisrael, when Rommel's forces entered the area.) Hussainei had been inciting for years, but now spread rumors that the Jews were conquering Temple Mount in Jerusalem.]

A mass of frenzied Arab rioters proceeded towards the (Hebron) Yeshiva. The hour was late and it was nearly Shabbat. For this reason the study hall was empty, with the exception of two people: the custodian and one student, nicknamed the "matmid" or perpetual student, Shmuel Rosenhaltz, from Lita. He was already dressed in his Shabbat clothing, and was studying his daily lessons. When the murderers appeared at the entrance to the Yeshiva, their faces full of madness and their eyes shining like those of wild animals, holding knives and daggers, the Yemenite custodian managed to jump into a water pit and hide there.
Rosenhaltz, the perpetual student, engrossed in his studies, continued concentrating on his Gemara, totally unaware of the impending danger. Suddenly, hundreds of stones flew into the Yeshiva. A large stone hit Rosenhaltz in the head, stunning him. Blood poured from the wound onto the pages of the Gemara. In shock, he stood and ran towards the door. Within moments he was stabbed by tens of Arabs. He fell on the Yeshiva floor, lying in his blood, the first victim of the Arab mob.

An English officer declared: "All Jews should remain in their houses on Shabbat, and shouldn't be seen outside. I am responsible for their lives.

Shabbat - Saturday 18 Av 5689 - August 1929

Hundreds of Arabs surround Eliezer Dan Slonim's house. (Slonim was the great grandson of Menucha Rachel [Shneerson] Slonim, grand daughter of the "Admor HaZaken - "Ba'al HaTania.") They charged the house in fury. The air shook with screams from unspeakable atrocities. Over seventy people sought refuge here, including Yeshiva students, and family members, who thought this to be the most secure place in Hebron. For Eliezer Dan Slonim was highly esteemed by the Arabs. He was the director of the local English-Palestine bank whose many clients were Arabs, and was the sole Jewish member of the Hebron Municipal Council.
He had many friends among the Arab elders and they had promised to protect him. Therefore, many families gathered at his home, for fear of the Arab mobs, hoping to find here refuge and safety.

Wrapped in their prayer shawls and full of fear, the men stood and prayed in awe, morning Sabbath services. Several watched the massacre at the Borland house. Suddenly the house exploded with the sound of broken glass. Yeshiva students moved furniture to the front door to prevent it from being forced open.

For over fifteen minutes the sound of metal bars and axes pounding at the door filled the air, along with the horrid screaming of the people inside. Suddenly a hole appeared in the door.
Gunshots thundered. Mr. Vilanski is hit in the face and badly hurt. A bullet hits a yeshiva student, Yisrael Mordechai Kaplan, killing him. Voices screaming "Shema Yisrael" fill the house.

The murders enter the house through the door on the roof. The front door is forced open. Eliezer Dan Slonim shoots from his pistol. A metal bar splits open his head, his weapon flying from his hand. Death screams fill the house.

[The British police stood by the entire day and did almost nothing. Most of the police were unarmed. Towards evening, two Arabs approached an English policeman on horseback. Feeling threatened, he removed his gun from its holster and fired into the air. Hearing the gunshots, the Arab mobs immediately dissipated. The riot came to an end. Sixty seven Jews were killed and hundreds wounded. The survivors were herded into the basement of the police station at Beit Romano and left their for three days. The Arabs rampage their houses, stealing and destroying Jewish property, undisturbed. A minion of 10 men were allowed to participate in the funeral for the murdered Jews, held at night, in the ancient Jewish cemetery in Hebron. After three days the Jews were loaded onto cars and sent to Jerusalem, exiled from their homes, the city of the Patriarchs. For the first time in hundreds of years, Hebron had no Jewish residents.]

"The Martyrs of Hebron" - Personal Reminiscences of Some of the Men and Women Who Offered their Lives During the Massacre of August 24, 1929, at Hebron, and of Some Who Were Spared by Rabbi Leo Gottesman z”l.
Rabbi Gottesman studied in the "Hebron Yeshiva" in 1929.
Following the massacre he wrote a book, published in 1930.

From the Forward

...The world will wonder one day about these times, and about the people who lived and struggled and gave their lives in achieving the victory of transforming a desolate Palestine into a flourishing Eretz Yisrael. Is it not we who must give the record to the world? Shall they who sacrificed themselves be so inscribed that future generations may render to their memory such reverence as we are humbly proud to render today? We would be derelict in our duty, both to those who are gone from earth and t hose who are yet to come, if we failed to write the story of the martyrs while their remembrance is fresh in our hearts.

Those Who Were Killed

1. Eliezer Dan Slonim

Twenty-two died in the home of Eliezer Dan Slonim and he the first of them, on the morning of August 24th.
His heroic martyrdom in death was characteristic of the man. With him died his wife Hannah, and their little son Aaron...The introduction to him took place in the Hebron branch of the Anglo-Palestine Bank, of which he was the manager...He mentioned that there was a spare room in his home which would probably be suitable.
But he had not contemplated letting it, and could not do so without consulting his wife. He invited me, however, to accompany him home to meet Mrs. Slonim...Rarely has such a fine friendship developed in a short time as did between the Slonim family and myself...Never was I permitted to leave the house in the morning until I had had coffee, or at other times, until I had joined in eating of the best delicacies - particularly kugel on the Sabbath. ....

(Slonim's) interest in the Yeshiva knew no bounds and his services were invaluable. Most characteristic of him, Eliezer Dan acted without show and without ostentation. No one know how many times he stepped in to save the Yeshiva or one of its people in time of trouble... His love of Palestine as a whole and Hebron in particular was infinite. He was offered a position in Tel Aviv that would pay him a larger salary than he was getting. He declined. He did not wish to leave Hebron. ...He knew the Arabs well and was on terms of best friendship with them. On cold nights during the rainy season, when the best Arab homes are none to comfortable, the local Sheiks were accustomed to gather in Eliezer Dan's house, to talk, and play chess, and drink black Arabian coffee. He got along so well with them that even now it seemunbelievable that he as killed by Arabs. And indeed,he could have saved himself on the basis of this friendship.

Hannah Slonim's benevolence, her charity, her social welfare work, were know and praised by all the inhabitants of Hebron, Jewish and Arab. Her overbrimming kindness, her spiritual capacity, her personal greatness was a thing to marvel over. We used to get our water from a well in front of her house-the Well of Jacob. I remember her numerous kindness to the dirty tattered Arab lad who used to fetch water. It was not more, however, than what she did for all the needed of Hebron.

...A number of Arabs came knocking at his door. Give out the strangers you are harboring there they cried, and we will spare you and your kinfolk. His answer, a culminating step in his martyrdom, was characteristic of the man:
"I have no strangers here, - only my brethren!"

Eliezer Dan had a revolver, which he was licensed to carry because of his position in the bank. When they shattered the door, the Arabs found themselves facing Eliezer Dan, revolver in hand; behind him, the huddled crowd of women and children. Eliezer Dan pulled the trigger. The revolver had never been used. It jammed. They sprang upon him, a nd so he was the first to die. Hannah was not killed by the Arabs. She died there because her heart burst when she saw her husband murdered.

Little Aaron was killed. Hannah's parents were killed.
Twenty-two in all, died in Eliezer Dan's house.
Twenty-two martyrs. Their souls rest in peace. There were no arms in the house - except Eliezer Dan's revolver that failed. The people were defenseless.
Two were saved in that house as by a miracle. A girl of fifteen, Hannah's sister, was pushed into a closet by Lezer Yanishker-one of the students at the Yeshiva.
Yanishker, twenty four years old, powerfully built, was known as the giant of the Yeshiva. He held the girl confined in the closet during the massacre. When she saw her parents killed-she was watching through a crack in the door of the closet-she would have screamed.
Yanishker held her mouth-held it so tightly that her lips were swollen and distorted for weeks after.

The Arabs had not forgotten the friendship of Eliezer Dan Slonim. They killed him and his little child and wife, and her parents, in spite of it. He died, as he had lived, a son of his people, a nobleman of nature.

In the bloody Arab riots of 1921, when Yosef Hayyim Brenner, the distinguished socialist pioneer and author, was among those murdered, I was not in Palestine. . . But in the second half of 1929, where there was a fresh wave of murderous Arab attacks throughout Palestine, from Hebron to Safed, I was back at home...

I believe I was the first Jew to reach Safed from the outside after the massacre there. One Friday morning we heard that there had been a pogrom in Safed. We read the official announcement: "On August 29, at 6:15, disturbances broke out in Safed. The army arrived on the scene at 8:35 and immediately restored order. There were some fatal casualties and many houses were burnt. The Jewish inhabitants were at once transferred to safety. Since then calm has prevailed in Safed."

August 29 was a Thursday. Throughout the day rumors continued to come in that the pogrom in Safed was still going on. But Government House provided us with no further information about events in Safed, which was included in the jurisdiction of the Haifa district commissioner. We had enough experience not to trust the reassuring official announcement...

We set out on Saturday morning. . . I could not believe my eyes. . . I met some of the town's Jewish elders, who fell on my neck weeping bitterly. We went down alleys and steps to the old town. Inside the houses I saw the mutilated and burned bodies of the victims of the massacre, and the burned body of a woman tied to the grille of a window. Going from house to house, I counted ten bodies that had not yet been collected. I saw the destruction and the signs of fire. Even in my grimmest thoughts I had not imagined that this was how I would find Safed where "calm prevailed."

The local Jews gave me a detailed description of how the tragedy had started. The pogrom began on the afternoon of Thursday, August 29, and was carried out by Arabs from Safed and from the nearby villages, armed with weapons and tins of kerosene. Advancing on the street of the Sefardi Jews from Kfar Meron and Ein Zeitim, they looted and set fire to houses, urging each other on to continue with the killing. They slaughtered the schoolteacher, Aphriat, together with his wife and mother, and cut the lawyer, Toledano, to pieces with their knives. Bursting into the orphanages, they smashed the children's heads and cut off their hands. I myself saw the victims. Yitshak Mammon, a native of Safed who lived with an Arab family, was murdered with indescribable brutality: he was stabbed again and again, until his body became a bloody sieve, and then he was trampled to death. Throughout the whole pogrom the police did not fire a single shot. The British police commander, Farradav, walked up and down the main street of the town, where everything was quiet, and did not go down to the scene of the massacre...

The district commissioner defended his own conduct. He said he had known that the situation there was serious, and had therefore demanded that troops be sent in, but they had arrived too late. . . I was unsparing in my criticism of him for not having visited Safed. I said that this showed in the clearest possible way that the government was to blame for what had happened. Riots had been taking place for the past seven days, seven whole days since the Hebron massacre. Incitement to violence in the Safed mosques and provocative stone throwing and threats in the streets had been daily occurrences. The warship and troops had already arrived by then. The looting, destruction, burning, and killing had begun already on Thursday evening and continued all that night and all the next day. Why, then, had the government put out its falsely reassuring announcement?

Instead of protecting the Jewish population and its property, the police commander had evacuated four thousand Jews from their homes to the courtyard of Government House, leaving their homes to be looted and burned. While the looting and killing were still going on, the police were searching the Jews for arms...

My thoughts about the Safed tragedy gave me no peace for a long time. How had such a thing happened? What was the explanation for the terrible loss of Jewish life and property, 18 killed, about 40 wounded, and 200 houses burned and looted?
". . . You declare, my friend, that you do not hate the Jews, you are merely 'anti-Zionist.' And I say, let the truth ring forth from the high mountain tops, let it echo through the valleys of God's green earth: When people criticize Zionism, they mean Jews--this is God's own truth.
"Antisemitism, the hatred of the Jewish people, has been and remains a blot on the soul of mankind. In this we are in full agreement. So know also this: anti-Zionist is inherently antisemitic, and ever will be so.

"Why is this? You know that Zionism is nothing less than the dream and ideal of the Jewish people returning to live in their own land. The Jewish people, the Scriptures tell us, once enjoyed a flourishing Commonwealth in the Holy Land. From this they were expelled by the Roman tyrant, the same Romans who cruelly murdered Our Lord. Driven from their homeland, their nation in ashes, forced to wander the globe, the Jewish people time and again suffered the lash of whichever tyrant happened to rule over them.

"The Negro people, my friend, know what it is to suffer the torment of tyranny under rulers not of our choosing. Our brothers in Africa have begged, pleaded, requested--DEMANDED the recognition and realization of our inborn right to live in peace under our own sovereignty in our own country.

"How easy it should be, for anyone who holds dear this inalienable right of all mankind, to understand and support the right of the Jewish People to live in their ancient Land of Israel. All men of good will exult in the fulfilment of God's promise, that his People should return in joy to rebuild their plundered land.

This is Zionism, nothing more, nothing less.

"And what is anti-Zionist? It is the denial to the Jewish people of a fundamental right that we justly claim for the people of Africa and freely accord all other nations of the Globe. It is discrimination against Jews, my friend, because they are Jews. In short, it is antisemitism.

"The antisemite rejoices at any opportunity to vent his malice. The times have made it unpopular, in the West, to proclaim openly a hatred of the Jews. This being the case, the antisemite must constantly seek new forms and forums for his poison. How he must revel in the new masquerade! He does not hate the Jews, he is just 'anti-Zionist'!

"My friend, I do not accuse you of deliberate antisemitism. I know you feel, as I do, a deep love of truth and justice and a revulsion for racism, prejudice, and discrimination. But I know you have been misled--as others have been--into thinking you can be 'anti-Zionist' and yet remain true to these heartfelt principles that you and I share.

Let my words echo in the depths of your soul: When people criticize Zionism, they mean Jews--make no mistake about it."

I have a sneaking suspicion, that were MLK to visit the occupied territories today, he would most certainly know what side he was on.

Just ask Nelson Mandela, or any other African leader. They know that the Israelis actively collaborated with the Apartheid regime because they recognized a soul mate.

Both settler nations believed that the lands of the earth belonged to them and that the original inhabitants were nothing but slaves or "terrorists."

But all tyrannies fall. Zionism is doomed. Do the math. Maybe with your patron in Washington DC, you can keep a bunch of F16s around to bomb civilians. But their children will remember and so on. Your time will come.

Most grotesque has to be the apologists for Israel. Those American Jews who, after their teenage indoctrination trip to an Israeli air base or whatever, now spend their time spewing distorted nonsense that no one else believes.

You see, the rest of us believe in human rights for all people. We don't think we are the chosen people of god, like the settlers do. We think all people deserve dignity and democratic rights. Until Israel lets the people who hold title to the land return and lay claim, they will continue to live in a permanent state of war. Until Palestine wins. And fear not, that day will come.

The Palestinian men send their children out to do the dangerous work. They hide behind their children.

The Isreali men send their young men out to shoot them. They hide behind their army.

They are both sick. The world, including the U.S. should turn its back on both and stay out of this war. Let the insane fight it out in that asylum called Isreal/Palestine. Maybe they will beat some sense into each other. No outside will be able to solve that mess.

No western money or guns should go to either side.
by Ariel Sharon
I have a sneaking suspicion, that were MLK to visit the occupied territories today, he would most certainly know what side he was on.

===> Perhaps. He would also see the pizza parlor full of teens that Hamas targeted.

Just ask Nelson Mandela, or any other African leader. They know that the Israelis actively collaborated with the Apartheid regime because they recognized a soul mate.

===> What's interesting about your post is the depth of your ignorance. Israel and many, many African states were allies up until the '67 and '73 wars, when they realized they could get more goodies from the Soviets and their Arab clients than they would from the Jews. As far as collaboration with S.A., re-read first couple sentences. Maybe if the Arab states and soviet clients hadn;t taken a rejectionist stance, Israel would not be forced to do business with the only states who would trade with them.

Both settler nations believed that the lands of the earth belonged to them and that the original inhabitants were nothing but slaves or "terrorists."

===> Slaves or terrorists? Interesting. What do you think the Muslim and Arab settlers in the 7th century thought of the *original* inhabitants of the lands they conquered back then? Oh, that's right. Indigenous status only goes back to the th century.

But all tyrannies fall. Zionism is doomed. Do the math.

===> I tried Calc., trig, and some geometry, but it still adds up to Jews living free and Palis choosing to live for the struggle, no for their state.

Maybe with your patron in Washington DC, you can keep a bunch of F16s around to bomb civilians. But their children will remember and so on. Your time will
come.

===> And their children will continue to blow up pizza parlors, buses. This is the funny part where the brave progressive souls fight the intidada from the safety of the Bay Area. Hilarious. My favorite peeps are the ones who wear t-shirts, hats, and jewelry with the Palestinian flag on it. Some folks have the Raiders of Giants, you have the Palis. Neat-O! Go Team!

Most grotesque has to be the apologists for Israel. Those American Jews who, after their teenage indoctrination trip to an Israeli air base or whatever, now spend their time spewing distorted nonsense that no one else believes.

===> Check the latest public opinion polls, including Zogby. 70% of Americans are believeing it. HAHAHA!

You see, the rest of us believe in human rights for all people.

===> Except Israelis it seems.

We don't think we are the chosen people of god, like the settlers do.

===> Or the Jews for that matter! Those pesky settlers in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, etc. Why don't they just go back to Poland or Russia where they came from!

We think all people deserve dignity and democratic rights.

===> "We'? You have a mouse in your pocket? And again, i guess all people means everyone but Israelis......

Until Israel lets the people who hold title to the land return and lay claim, they will continue to live in a permanent state of war. Until Palestine wins. And fear not, that day will come.

===> That day will come indeed. Sure, keep sending kids to throw rocks at tanks. keep blowing up buses. It's working so well isn;t it? 4 to 1 death rate, an economy in ruins, complete erosion of political capital from other nations blown up in the smoke of terrorist bombings. Your cowardice is amazing. You type slogans from your computer in America while real people die so you feel part of a *struggle*. Please post more often, Palestine should be proud to have you as an advocate!

by the burningman
Bravery. Funny coming from an apologist for a fascist nation. I am not a soldier and never claimed to be one. I support democratic rights for all people in historic Palestine, including Jews. I suspect however, that the Jews will head en masse for New York when they aren't able to keep Palestinians as their toilet cleaners.

70% of Americans support Israel? Come to New York City where all the media and government is more pro-Israel than the Israelis. And talk to non-Jews on the street. People are fucking fed up. Our city just got bombed because of our government's involvement in dominating the middle east. And a lot of people here are pretty clear on that.

Look, you can complain about suicide bombings all day long. They horrify my too. Imagine what needs to happen before something like that becomes common place. I do. And I talk to Arabs pretty regularly. A lot has happened. Decades of degredation, like the Palestinians have been under, produces either defeat or rage. Palestine has decided to never again leave, be defeated or surrender.

And the Israelis are increasingly isolated in the international community. They are despised as puppets of the US. Billions a year to support their militarism and brutality. They fly american jets and make people we've never met hate us because we as a nation abide by the horror.

It's got to stop. And you can mock those students at Berkeley all day long. For Arabs to stand up now in the US is, indeed, brave. Hundreds have been kidnapped by the FBI and INS without charges or notification. But you, despicable Quisling that you are, cannot even begin to realize the depth of the human rights catastrophe happening within the US, let alone the occupied territories.

Again, if the Israelis are an entirely military society, who are the innocent? They all choose to move onto some one else's land. They all join the army for their entire adult life and they vote for a scumbag like Sharon by a two to one margin. Who are the innocents? You tell me.

And the Israelis, to answer another post, don't have their backs against the wall. There's always New York. I live in a mostly Israeli neighborhood. They seem to be doing alright to me. Most of them have dual citizenship with the US, the EU or another third country. Because Israel isn't a nation - it's a garrison.

shut up, burningman, you anti-Semitic moron!!!!!
by the burningman
Could Mike please quote the anti-Semetic argument I'm making? Or could he please shut the fuck up?

I swear, these people are so insular they have no idea how isolated they are.

People, most people, believe in decency. One day you may learn about that.
by Fred
I'll take this one.

Burningman writes....."What is so great about Israel that it shouldn't be destroyed....the Israeli state must fall."

How is it possible to "destroy" Israel without it resulting in the mass slaughter or other cause of death of Jews. Statement like this are an incitement to slaughter by Hamas-type terrorists.

Elsewhere you write that Israelis in the U.S. are doing ok and they shouldn't whine about the plight of Israel. That type of reasoning--"what's wrong with the Jews? They're rich"- is typical of anti-Semites.

You may not be an anti-Semite, burningman. In fact, my hunch is that you are not. But out of one side of your mouth you mutter humanitarian platitudes and out of the other you issue blood-curdling pronouncements like the above. So you have no one but yourself to blame if people conclude that you are a bigot.

As for you, "mike," you're just an idiot. Shutup.
.
by mike
i know you are but what am i? sticks and bones my break my stones but names will never burp me. oh, i was born in the usa, bornnn in the usssaaaaa, yeah, yeah, all's we are saying is give peace a chance, yeah, yeah, yeah.......eeewanngo z tango!
by the burningman
I'm all for calling bigots out. The only people who have ever called me a bigot, of any kind, were Zionists. The democratic underpinning of my argument was never discussed. Again, only Zionists. I've been baited as a Jew quite a few more times than that and unlike the vast majority of American activists, have had to make work against anti-Semetism an integral part of my routine. At least when I was in school.

The destruction of a state says nothing about the people. The destruction of the Italian fascist state was carried out by the Italian people. But I'm not holding my breath to see Sharon hanging from a lamp pole. And neither are the Palestinians. They've had enough.

And so has the world. The pressure will only build. Israel has never and will never know peace.

And a frank discussion of what America offers the jewish people is not anti-semetic. Again, Jews are one of the richest and most pampered ethnic groups in the US. They aren't running the show. There's no conspiracy. But the census doesn't lie. Jewish ghettos in America? Like Skokie? Or Forest Hills? I'm not making this up. Check out municipal politics in NYC.

I hope Jewish people wake up to the atrocities committed in their name. Many have. In New York, Jews Against the Occupation has even gone so far as to support the Palestinian right of return. Brave indeed.

But the utter intransigence of Israelis is an abomination. They must leave or commit treason. There is no middle ground.

It's amazing how even educated people can be moronic when it comes to Palestinians and Arabs(just as some arabs are towards Israelis).
Why don't you try reading some material from arabs and palestinians.....most won't. DENIAL.
Read all the human rights reports condeming IDF targeting of civilians to kill(Amnesty, B'Tselem, Human's Rights Watch). Instead of quoting what Palestinian leaders (the ones quoted are all extremists) read what Israel leaders have said from the 1950's, including Sharon, Ben Gurion and others...
Instead of making a list of all Israelis killed by terrorists, one line would suffice, in my mind, more than 20,000 civilians killed in Lebanon by the Israeli army. It seems mass murder doesn't count here.
Just read! Read books by arabs! by Americans! By Israelis themselves then come and tell me that Israel is the best country ever. Go to this website:
http://electronicintifada.net/new.html
if you don't like what they say, send them an email, they will respond, unlike the many websites that are pro-Israeli who state things as facts , where in reality they are not, and they won't bother answering any questions.
by QTR (lailtaweel [at] hotmail.com)
one more thing....for anyone, Israeli, Arab, American, or whatever, who feels the need to question the behaviour of Arabs or Palestinians or has any questions regrading the middle east conflict, feel free to contact me. If I can help I will.

Peace, no matter how far it may seem.

How about a moment of silence for the poor one-year-old child (and others) who was murdered yesterday in the name of Palestine. Wasn't it students such as those at Berkley that screamed "Baby Killer" at US troops during Vietnam? Strange how it seems to be okay to kill kids now as long as it's for a good cause. Was this a military target? No. How can anybody rationally belive that the Palestinians are an oppressed people? They are evil in every since of the word and as long as Arafat and his terrorisst cronnies continue to run the state there will be no peace.
by letheomaniac (letheomania [at] hotmail.com)
Israel is an apartheid state - as a South African i find it almost beyond belief that the US could support this when they where among the first to impose sanctions on us back in the bad old days - does anyone else find this to be an entirely hypocritical stance?
by Karl
There is no easy answer, of course, but certainly voilent reprisals will not heal the wounds. First we all have to mature beyond attacks and return to negotiations.

Thr vitriolic attacks on Israel and the incredibly naive support of the Palestinian extremists is almost beyond comprehension for this ordinary American. A measured analysis of the situation indicates that although the Israelis have killed innocent people I'm sure, they have not deliberately targeted innocent people. On the other hand, the Palestinians have made it a rule to kill by--the deliberate death of innocent citizens creates just the impact they want. Accordingly, when you wallow in comfort here in the US you can afford to be detached becasue you think your actions have no consequence. However, your pathetic naivete encourages the slaughter of innocent by-standers and vindicates events like 9/11. If you can't grow up and face reality you certainly shouldn't be wasting my tax dollars "being heroes" in some silly march!

Should be Burninggirl you big baby--that the best you can do? Anyone disagrees with you and they are "fascists?" That's teh kind of thing Joe Stalin and Adolf Hitler used to say isn't it?

Ooooh, Burningirl--an attempt at composure after your hissy fit, I can hardly believe it! You are not kidding anyone. You clearly have your pre-conceptions so deeply embedded that despite any historical or rational analysis you are not, nor ever will be open to true discourse. You aren't for Human Rights you use the phrase to cover up your tracks on the road to hell that is paved with others' good intentions.

I can forsee the end of the state "israel" is coming soon.... even sooner than i had expected. I had thought it would be during my childrens lifetimes but it seems that finally the world has opened it eyes and is willing to join the noble struggle for Palestine. No longer are people accepting the zionist lies and myths, the twisting and distorting of facts which has been their trait and best weapon. Thousands of supporters are going to Palestine in solidarity from allover the world of all faiths and nations.

The zionist aims to isolate the Palestinians and to equate the palestinian struggle for freedom with terrorism has backfired. I always knew that truth would be revealed about zionism and its murderous legacy. They did after all elect a war criminal responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people. His aspirations for genocide of the true inhabitants of this land, the Palestinians, can be read in his autobiography and in various newspapers. But these evil aims will not be fullfilled for God is great. The Palestinians, armed with stones, have smashed the 4th most powerful army.

My dreams of seeing the sights of the great mosques and churches of the holyland, or of tasting the oranges from the trees of yaffa will come true soon.

I just hope and pray that the friends of Palestine who have joined in our struggle will come and visit the land, and together help us to rebuild the country.

The last 54 years have been a blot on this lands history, the blood of Palestinians spilt has run deep into the soil. The dead of Deir Yassin and Sabra and Shatila and the thousands of martyrs will be commemorated every hour and everyday. They will not be forgotten. Peace.

If you truly want peace, you will reach to your neighbors with a peaceful hand. If you want death and martardom, especially when your neighbors are much more powerful than yourself, you will call for the death of your neighbors.

Your choice.

Dave, who is calling for the wholesale murder of millions of Israelis, is part of the problem and will lead the Palestinians to their deaths.

Can you really expect the Israelis to allow themselves to be destroyed. Wake up dear man. The entire region will burn if Israel is destroyed. Say good bye to 6 million Jews and 300 million Arabs. If you're a Nazi it's a nice deal, but if you're a Jew or Arab I'd think twice about it.
by David White
Prior to the 1948 war against Israel the Iraqi Prime Minister said all the Arabs would need would be "a few brooms" to drive the Jews into the sea.
This is one sample out of many why I strongly want the Americans, and any other European country to stay away and not support anybody or otherwise interfere in the Middle East. For this will alow once for all to see who would be "wiped to the sea", the Israelis or the Arabs.
I am sure that for all the Arab retoric, if the western world coutries would not protect them even though they are such aggressors, it is them who would be wiped away many years ago and the world not need to be bothered so much by some of the greatest bunch of loosers on earth namely the Arabs.

Chomsky Talk - For Middle East Children's Alliance in S.F. mid March 2002

NOAM CHOMSKY
BERKELEY, MECA, 3.21.02

Q: At your talk Tuesday at U.C. Berkeley, you were not very enthusiastic about the movement to divest from --that says Palestine but I think it means Israel. Could you explain why?

Well, I just expressed my reservations, the same ones I expressed here already. I don't say it's the wrong thing to do. I never trust my own judgment on issues of tactics, which is not very good, my judgment. But there are some problems that I see. The problem is that the protest should be directed here. It's easy to criticize others, but when those others are doing it because we allow them to and arm them to do it and support them to do it and encourage them to do it, there are some questions about directing our actions to them. And that would be true if it's Israel or Turkey or other agents of U.S. atrocities. So that's my reservation. How you figure out a way around that you have to think through yourselves.

I too am against occupation. That is why the Palestinian Arabs must leave Israel, including Judea, Samaria and Gazza (called the West Bank) immediately. They are occupying Jewish land. The Arabs have 21 states and the Jews only one. The Arabs continue killing Jews via terrorism - they want the destruction of Israel and will accept nothing less, so says Hamas leaders and spokespeople. It is time to end the false retoric propogated by the Arabs - the time has come for them to leave Israel now!
by Mr T
Its people like this asshole who perpetuate this conflict more than anyone else. These are the people one should be against. Gehrig, this is the type of person that I am against. Someone who calls for a onquest of land due to that fact that he thinks he may have had some relative who lived there 2000 years ago. That relative, of ocurse unnamed, is the root of his arguement. By his stance via Brooklyn we could take over most of the known world through our historical claims. To dismantle this shit is why I entertained the Khazar bit for while.

And now for this shithead, first off the land was not ever all Jewish even the Bible tells you that you silly sot. Samaria, for example was largely populated by Samaritans. Samaritans were not the same as the ancient Israelites. So I guess by your logic you should say get any Jew the fuck out of Samaria. jews should not occupy Samarian land.

Second, I would like to know how you could possibly say that the ancient israelites exclusively owned that land, exclusively were born there raised there whatever you will. Because historical records and the Bible both contradict this. Abraham did not move to a land without people. There always was a presence of other peoples in the Bible. It never was exclusively jewish people.

Third, "The Arabs continue killing Jews via terrorism - they want the destruction of Israel and will accept nothing less, so says Hamas leaders and spokespeople" This is an obvious flaw in rhetoric. This equates the entire Arab community with that of Hamas. This is ridiculuos. Hamas consists of extremists. The day that Hamas becames mainstream and another extremeist group takes their place then you could equate Hamas with the rest of the Arab world. Until then sit down, shut up, and keep your goddamned ideas of conquest to yourself.

50+ nations, 1 billion+ people and they are the victims!!! Well i actually have been to the middle east and while the desert views are stunning and the people gladly accept dollars they actually belive the reason every single arab state in the world is a dictatorship (Malasia and Indonesia are the only moslem democracy's, but they are not arab!) is because of America and Israel. They truly belive the cia and mossad are behind every single thing wrong with their countries. Self criticism is simply nonexistent, they really belive they had a golden age 500 years ago (which is true) and since then they have not changed a single iota. 500 years of stagnant politics has bred a vicious selfdenial which is breathtaking in its ability to gloss over everyday facts and blame everyone else.
Look all im saying is that this region is seriously backward and for lack of a better word slightly barbaric. I do not agree with the palestinians turning to violence for political gains and while the Israeli response is undeniably harsh i doubt anyone of you would react with flowers and candy!!! While the Israeli society is split in its government response to the violence the palestinians aside from a few intellectuals are almost universally jubulant whenever and israeli (soldier or CIVILIAN) is killed, which should be rather sickening to a culture which screams its superioity in arabic on a daily basis. So before you all throw out these statements about aparthied and such ask yourselves a question: Would you rather live in Saudi Arabia or Israel, and i suggest a trip over there to help you consider it!!!
by Critical Thinker
>>>"and while the Israeli response is undeniably harsh i doubt anyone of you would react with flowers and candy!!!<<<

It undeniably *looks* harsh, and Israel has had its excesses in its reaction.
But I don't think one can contend Israel's reaction is harsh based on proper perspective. When it's put in such a perspective, one notes Israel's reaction has, on the whole, been harsh compared to the reaction of the Dalai-Lama and his Buddhist followers to the Chinese occupation of Tibet since 1949. If we look at Israel's response from the other side, we see that the Russian reaction to Chechen terror, or the Milosevic led Serb reaction to Bosnia's breakaway, have been much harsher than Israel's.

We must view countries' reactions to terror and insurgencies through the proper perspective.

And the Tit for Tat will never end till there is Compromise where both side end up with somthing. Instead one side with nothing and the other with everything.

For there to be Peace and for there to be a reason for the Palestinian People to stop their fight for Freedom:
We need a Palestinian State with Reasonable Border NOW, If the Road Map that is backed by the U.S., U.N., E.U., and Russia is to work...
Send in a Joint, U.S., U.N. Peace keeping Force to the West Bank and Gaza for the sole purpose of trying to avoid conflicts between the Palestinian and the settlers..
Then have the Biased (biased because they will always be on the side of the settlers) Israeli Military retreat to the pre 1967 Israeli Borders, They can then concentrate their effort on guarding this Border..

Example of a possible solution:
SET THE BORDERS BACK TO 1967...
In return the Refugees have no Right of Return inside the 1967 Israeli Borders..
One complaint that Israel has is that the Right of Return will result in two Palestinian States, (The Right of return is almost impossible any way because the land and homes they lost are now built up with Jewish homes businesses etc…)
The Refugees can be compensated and helped to settle somewhere in the new Palestinian State..
The Settlements are now part of Palestine...
If the some 300,000 Israeli Settlers living in Palestine do not like living there, they can move to Israel...
If the 1,000,000 or so Palestinians who now live in Israel do not like living in Israel, they can move to Palestine...
If 1,000,000 or so Palestinians can live in Israel, then some 300,000 Israeli Settlers can live in Palestine if they choose to stay..
If you take Israel, West Bank and Gaza, West Bank and Gaza is only 22% of the total area in Question, This small amount is not too much to ask for millions of Palestinians who must have their freedom to have a peaceful life.
If this solution was implemented there is a good chance the so called terrorist (seen as freedom fighters by the oppressed Palestinian People) would stop their fight, if not they would be very foolish because then Israel would have a just cause to fight back and the U.S. would have a just cause to help Israel fight back.
Otherwise we will continue to have:
Israel: We have to confiscate Palestinian land and demolish Palestinian homes because there are suicide bombers???
Palestine: We have to defend ourselves because Israel is slowly confiscating all our land and demolishing our homes. We have no military to defend ourselves and our land. If we do nothing, we will soon have nothing at all???
The era of colonization is past,. We can not expect to oppress millions of Palestinian People and still have peace.

Israel can't hand land over to Palestinains if the Palestinian leaders who will gain control of the land are just going to eventually make full war on Israel in the future once they've had time to gather weapons. Arafat and friends, hamas, islamic jihad and the like, none of them can be trusted, and it is ridiculous to expect Israel to hand land to people/groups who hate Israel's very existence and inspire their people to "die as martyrs in attacking the zionist entity."

When Palestinians have leaders who tell their peope that dying as martyrs is insane, and tell their people that Israel isn't leaving and they have to be peaceful neighbors, and ACTUALLY MEAN WHAT THEY SAY, that's when Israel can hand land over, see how things go, and then make it permanent.

by JC
There's no "right of return" for jews to the 20+ arab/muslim countries that jews once lived in, so there will be no "right of return" for arabs who once lived in israel.

It's no coincidence that the loudest anti-israel critics are people who, like hamas, don't pray for peace, but they pray for the destruction of israel. The loudest anti-israel critics, once you get to know them, 99% of the time turn out to be anti-semites who like rabid maniacs (see: burningman, above) are willing to lie, rant and accuse, all in the name of destroying Israel.

They're anti-semites. They don't want peace for palestinians. THey want peace for palestinians AND they want palestinains to wipe israel out and kill enough jews to take the place over. Palestinians don't want a secular democratic state with jews. THey want one islamic state on top of israel, just like muslims 1000 years ago built a mosque right on top of the jewish temple mount.

Arabs/Persians/Muslims control 99.8% of the middle east, yet the obsession to attack israel continues...

by ANGEL
>>>Arabs/Persians/Muslims control 99.8% of the middle east, yet the obsession to attack israel continues...<<<

On the other hand.

Just like it would be outrages to try and ethnic cleanse some 5,000,000 Jews from the area.
It would also be an equal outrage to try and ethnic cleanse some 4,000,000 Palestinians from the area.
So let Israel have its Country in its pre 1967 Borders and let the Palestinians have their Country in the Whole of the West Bank and Gaza.

If you were to say that it would be wrong, to say to the Jews that even though they were born and have lived in Israel all their lives they had to move to the U.S. and Europe because there are Jews living in the U.S. and Europe.

It would be just as wrong to say to the Palestinian who were born and have lived all their lives in the West Bank and Gaza they had to move to Jordan just because some Palestinians happen to live in Jordan.

Compromise is sometime the only solution.
Hating the Palestinian People will not end the conflict.
Hating the Israeli People will not end the conflict.
