NOTICE: Rally To Save 3% Cap On Rents!

by Lynda Carson (lyndacarson [at] excite.com)
Oakland Renters And Supporters Unite To
Fight The Task Force Deal Meant To Shift
More Money From The Poor To The Rich!
Bring Your Friends To Fight The Greedy Land Barons From Stealing More Of Our Money!
Oakland Rally To Support Renters Rights
      ***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***
Join us to  preserve Oaklands annual 3% cap
on rent increases in a Press Conference and
a Rally to oppose some Rent Board Task Force
Proposals that are a sellout to the Landlord Lobby!

       WHEN:  Wed November 21, at 5 p.m.
Where: Steps Of Oakland City Hall.
(Corner of 14th St, and Broadway:Near 12th St BART Station)

On December 11, 2001, Oaklands City Council
plans to vote upon a Task Force Proposal that
intends to replace the annual 3% cap on rents
with a new "CPI/less Shelter Formula". This will
be devastating to the renters of Oakland, and for
thousands, rent increases of 18% or more shall
follow. We must stop this madness before it is to
be voted upon! We need your help.

Oakland has over 5,000 homeless, has become the nations 4th most expensive City to rent in, and had
rent increases of more than 21% during the past year.
More rent increases are not the solution to the Bay Areas Housing Crisis.

Join us Nov 21, at 5 p.m./Oakland City Hall.
A signed statement from numerous Oakland Doctors attesting to the devastating effects of sky rocketing rents on their patients shall be read as Testimony by one of the speakers. Further Testimony from others regarding the negative effects of outrageous rents shall be the theme of the event.

        Guest Speakers Include:
        Wilson Riles Jr.
        Cindy Pyle of St.Mary's Center
        Kendra M.Wilson of BOSS/Community Activist
        Rob Rooke/Campaign for Renters Rights
        James Tracy/Coalition On Homelessness
The Po Poets/A project of Poor Magazine
        Beverly Blythe/Community Activist
        Gabriela Maltz Larkin/Chicanna Actress
        Richard Mellor/Union Activist
Yessinia Rios/Family Advocate for Jubilee West
Edwin Johnson/Peer Counselor/Film Star of CHALK
Jim Lynch of Compumentor shall MC the event.

                  This Rally Supported By BOSS;

Maybe allowing prices to reach their natural price would be economically beneficial. You talk about renters being hurt, but what about people who are willing to pay more rent but can't because of artificial price ceilings? Maybe higher rent would drive out some low-lifes and make Oakland a nicer place to live. Housing shortages almost always follow rent controls. Look at Berkeley. An underground rent system is present because people are willing to pay more.

So, let me get this straight:

A rally in front of City Hall the day before Thanksgiving in a week in which all City Council meetings are cancelled, which goes into a weekend when nobody's going to read the newspapers because folks are preoccupied with being with their families.

Timing, timing...Whose idea was this anyway?

As a worker at the Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco ( http://www.HRCsfbay.org ), I want to lend my support and SOLIDARITY to all efforts to broaden and strengthen RENT CONTROL and TENANT RIGHTS throughout Oakland, the Bay Area and State of California.

Please see our website and call us if you are a tenant in the City of San Francisco with an issue that you need to resolve or any questions about your lease, evictions, roomates, repairs, illegal entry, etc. We also provide free referrals to the best pro-Tenant lawyers in town, most of whom offer free consultations, contingency, sliding scale, or do some pro-bono work. We are next door to the SF Eviction Defense Collaborative, a group of lawyers and para-legals dedicated to fighting evictions in SF.

"Maybe allowing prices to reach their natural price would be economically beneficial." ---excuse me? Beneficial to whom? 'natural' price' = whatever the LL's can get away with charging. Its perfectly "natural' for tenants to band together to defend their collective interests just as landlords do.

"You talk about renters being hurt, but what about people who are willing to pay more rent but can't because of artificial price ceilings? " --- no one is "willing" to pay more. There are those who are ABLE to pay more, perhaps, but does not mean they are willing to be fleeced. BTW, pay more for what? Pay more for the same or less service? Maybe I would pay more if I received more, bu LL's offer the same damn thing for more and more and more.

"Maybe higher rent would drive out some low-lifes and make Oakland a nicer place to live." --- Yes, I know you are interested in driving people out. Thats a given. But what if they are not low-lifes that are being driven out? Whats your definition? Because they are working poor they are low lifes? I beg your pardon!! You low-life!!

Housing shortages almost always follow rent controls. Look at Berkeley. An underground rent system is present because people are willing to pay more. --- Listen here, you low-life. Rent controls were started because the LL's were getting away with murder. They dtill do because ALL their income is unearned and parasitical. You are not against controlling rents. You just want control to be in the hands of the landlords, thats all. Or what you call "the market". But LL's control the market.

All landlord arguments are designed to have us believe that what is good for them is good for tenants. Thats the only way they can win over the most naive and gullible among the tenant class. Landlords are self-serving parasites who provide NOTHING. It is enants who provide for THEM and thats why they want to be landlords -- to get a free ride off of tenants, pass all their costs, all their taxes to tenants and enjoy a nice life with no labor expended. Go to work for a living!
