MAXXAM IS LOGGING THE HOLE IN THE HEADWATERS!!!

ONLY YOU CAN STOP THIS 705-ACRE INSANITY!

Hike to the Hole in the Headwaters

Legal March for Peace in the Forest
Teach-in at the Timber Plan Boundary

Saturday * Oct. 27 * 11 am ñ 6 pm

Starts Elk River Rd Headwaters Preserve Entrance. Gentle 8-mile round trip hike
(Elk River Rd. Exit just So. Of Eureka)

When the Headwaters Forest Preserve was created, the government in its infinite
incompetence left out a 705 acre "Hole" within the park boundaries that can be
logged. This majestic stand of 75-year-old redwood represents future marbled
murrelet and spotted owl habitat. The Elk River has been decimated by siltation.
flooding is now rampant. Letís complete the picture and save the Hole in the
Headwaters. The logging has just begun and so have we.

Carpool at the Arcata Co-op at 10 am

Protesting any issue is an American right. But protesting should have credence, and not be based solely on emotions, rumors, and lies. FACT: This plan (1-97-520 HUM) is formally called Rockpit, not hole in the headwaters. FACT: Despite what you may have heard on the media, there is not one single acre of clearcutting on this plan. It is ALL partial cutting: thinning and shelterwood cuts. FACT: The original plan called for 705 acres to be harvested. 110 of these acres have been removed for Class 2 NO CUT watercourse buffers. FACT: The original plan was to use tractors and yarders. Amendment 5 calls for only helicopter harvesting; no ground pounding. FACT: This area is not an ancient forest, or old growth forest, and it is not pristine. It is all second growth, with a complete truck road system, built from previous harvesting.

Before you waste your time protesting this plan, think about these facts. When the logging is completed, the redsidual canopy will be intact, and will accelerate its growth. There will be virtually no bare soil, except for the mitigation work points; a good thing. Everyone seems concerned about sediment. Logging will not create soil movement, but many of the old, Humboldt crossings will when they finally fail, unless they are properly pulled.

ADVICE: Stop watching the Arcata channel where the man says six different times: ' seven hundred acre clearcut'. Read the plan for yourself, and stop listening to the gurus. I can document what I say. Can you?

FACT
Maxxam PL is a nefarious and untrustworthy corporation that routinely and flagrantly violates the Forest Practices Act. So much so that they had their operating license revoked at one point. In FACT the CEO delights in his Darth Vader-ness and has held Headwaters hostage lo these many years.
We dont trust them because they so often lie to us, cheat on their logging plans, and even tacitly encourage their workers to go ahead and kill people. Violence against protesters has been institutionalized in Humboldt, and even Gypsy's death didnt slow it down. Another FACT: Maxxam hired Hill and Knowlton, those expensive PR hacks who brought us the Gulf War's mind-numbing yellow ribbon campaign. We had our own little yellow ribbon campaign here in Humboldt and Mendo as well. "We support the timber industry," a divide-and-conquer assault on these rural communities. If they have such cool logging plans why hire a PR firm to whip up such hatred and anxiety in the people?
Another FACT is that talk is cheap. Good sounding THPs (timber harvest plan) are even cheaper. I certainly hope the previous writer is correct but this is a greedhead scam company and shouldnt be logging in there at all, I dont care how "mediated" their shit is from the original logging plan. Headwaters has been bought and paid for at extravagantly inflated rates and Hurwitz didnt deserve a dime for it to begin with, being the scoundrel, S and L crashing, pension robbing, lying asshole that he is.
by DJR/RPF
I just read Drake's reply to my FACT comment. I cannot vouch for Maxxam, therefore I will not comment about it. I do resent the statement of cheating on logging plans and killing people. Your not even in the ballpark on that one. About the 520 plan; you let it be known that you have NOT read the THP when you said: "I certainly hope the previous writer is correct...". If you had read it, you would have known the actual truth, and personally, I don't think you can handle the truth. It might empty your caldron of hatred. I stand by the documents as approved by the California State agencies: there is NO clearcutting in this logged over, managed stand of second growth timber. The 520 plan is NOT surrounded by old growth. Helicopters will remove only the paint-to-be-cut trees, leaving the ground below intact, and a thrifty tree canopy above. These are facts. How can anyone dispute them?
by BS Buster
I think you will find that Drake will not answer your post properly, nor will he EVER read the THP. The truth is not his friend on this one, so instead he will hurl insults and bring up stuff that has nothing to do with the subject. His goal in life is to make sure that every timber job is eliminated or made as difficult as possible.
by mophead
the less loggers the better
by PB
I agree that we need to be painfully aware of the details of the THPs. And so while we read these, I ask DJR to check out Maxxam's background and judge for yourself whether you would trust this corporation with the stewardship of a rare ecosystem and the wellbeing of human communities?. Pacific Lumber has time and again violated permits, processes, and laws. These facts may look just fine in black and white - but why should we have to once again witness Maxxam/PL violate the public trust?

by BS Buster
Mophead's sentiment's are proof enough as to what the real issue is here. Mophead, thank you for your honesty. As for the post after Mophead's, this is typical of you folks in EarthFirst. Deal with the issue at hand instead of pulling in other stuff. Is this THP legal or not? Answer the question honsetly please. For once be honest.

since when has logging with helicopters ever left an intact canopy?
by hummm
fact....
PL has logged 60% of this watershed in the past 10-12 years.
Fact.....
PL has sidestepped the Regional Water Quality Control Board's directive to monitor before it logs this area, because the order doesn't go into effect until early december 2001.
Fact....
PL is being sued by some of the residents for the increased flooding.
Fact....
This area is adjacent to the Headwaters Preserve and surrounded by the buffer strips created on the back of a napkin when the half billion dollar rip off went into effect.
Fact....
Humboldt county's public facilities don't benefit from this cut or the timber tax base. Ever try to go use the public library there? The hours are so limited, it's pathetic. Due to budget constraints. With a county so bountiful in natural resources and exportation of those resources, why isn't the county bustling with longer library hours? Why is the fisheries industry almost extinct, yet Mr. Hurwitz and Campbell have their pockets lined with dollars they stole by exploiting the workers and the resources?
Fact...
Jared Carter and a high priced lobbiest threw a temper tantrum in Sacramento to get these cuts out and it worked. The issues are a lot more complicated than the THP and the wording in it.
by BS Buster
Once again, your gross distortions of reality force me to post on this site. Without getting in to all of your so-called facts allow me to point out at least one blatant mischaracterization.(By the way, I'm not quite sure what library hours have to do with anything. Maybe the library is closed because you don't pay your taxes.) PL sidestepped nothing with the water board. If you bothered to read the newspaper (oh, I'm sorry you don't because it is commercial) here is what the water board said about 520: "Water board attorney Dan Frink said the order did not contain 'an explicit prohibition of them beginning work on the (timber harvest plan) until monitoring equipment is in place.'" Translation: the company can log!

Please get your FACTS straight and stop wasting our time with BS.

The Humbolt Co. D.A. has enough timber harvest violations againt P.L, that the paperwork alone would fill up more than one semi-truck!! I don't think I should have to trust a co. that breaks the law, over and over again.
