Hey y'all,
Emergency meeting today Monday 2 pm Arcata at Casey's place on 9th near F
Street to determine strategies on the crisis for the Hole in the
Headwaters. Most of you can't make the meeting, so try to make the phone
call listed below.
MAXXAM/PL is about to log the hole in the Headwaters any minute now. The
only thing standing in the way of the decimation of this 705 acre large
second growth redwood stand and future murrelet habitat is the US Fish and
Wildlife Service.
You can call USFW Supervisor Amedee Brickey at 707/822 7201 and tell her
not to sign off on the wildlife consultation. Tell her that logging must
not begin until watercourse monitoring systems are in place. This timber
plan THP 520 expires next August, by the way, and is not in compliance with
the Habitat Consevation Plan, as it was written long before it was in place.
For those who don't know, the "Hole in the Headwaters is an area on the
northern border of the ancient redwoods of Headwaters and within the park
boundaries. However, it was not included in the preservation agreement,
thanks to Diane Feinstein. Hence--the "Hole" in the Headwaters.
Pressure is on Ken Hoffman of USFW to write his consultation report on
Spotted Owl surveys and once this is done, Amedee Brickey (or one of her
supervisors) signs off on it and the logging begins. Ken can be reached
also at 707/822-7201, as well.
The Hole in the Headwaters must be preserved. It would be criminal to see
it go down. Come to the meeting this Monday. Sorry for the short notice.
Gather up the forces to protest this insanity.
Please also be apprised that Pacific Lumber has filed a timber harvest plan
to log the ancient redwoods of Allen Creek. Allen Creek, part of the
60,000 acre Headwaters Forest, is supposed to have 50 year protection. Of
course we knew that PL would never last long on that promise. They're
claiming logging the ancient trees will HELP murrelets. Amidee Brickey is
also the point person on this. Don't be rude to her. Just tell her how
you feel. Thanks.
