Denial and Normalization

by Jen Card (astrojeny [at] hotmail.com)
The US, being the biggest producer of garbage, pollution, terrorism, etc. has a population normalizing what is going on in order to robotically go to work every day.
When a person, especially children are being abused, even horribly, they go through a process called normalization in order to cope. If a parent beats or rapes their child, the child will normalize the situation in order to be able to do the \"necessary\" tasks of going to school and functioning on a \"normal\" level. The adult also goes through the same process in order to continue their abusive behavior.

This is happening in a grand scale in the US, as well as all over the world. The US, being the biggest producer of garbage, pollution, terrorism, etc. has a population normalizing what is going on in order to robotically go to work every day. How can a person go to work, pay their taxes (which support the war), drive their cars here there and everywhere and feed themselves and their loved ones GMOs if they were really looking at the consequences. Supposedly we are free but have to \"earn\" our living. We are not free to live off the Earth, but the government and their corporate supporters are free to poison the Earth we need to live. We are not free to trust the safety of our food, but are free to buy it and it\'s life choking packaging in mass quantity. We are not free to get unbiased news from mass media. We are not free to walk through a park or public place without getting photographed by government cameras up to 300 times a day (Big Brother is alive and well). To feel the impact of all of this is too much for people, so they deny and normalize. We pretend it\'s normal to pollute the Earth, it\'s not really doing THAT much damage. We pretend it\'s normal to kill some brown people for oil and other resources, it\'s PROGRESS. We pretend it\'s NORMAL to clear cut the forests, because to do otherwise is to feel the torture and suffering of a complex web of life that is being destroyed in the name of meaningless profit.

It has gone way to far, all the way to the point that they just tell it to us straight, that the US is using it\'s \"full range of weaponry\" against Afghanistan, and yeah, so a few civilians are dying. It is easier to normalize than feel the full horror of the hypocrisy of a government that we have been taught is the model for a just society.

I want my people to wake up. It is like science fiction sometimes to be with the people going through the motions of their day, while the sky is falling around them. Their meaningless work, that has nothing directly to do with survival, holds nothing but empty whispers of security. But its all so much easier than fully feeling the impact of this system.

This structure of reality that government and corporations have created for us with the aid of televisions and propaganda is NOT normal. It\'s not normal to sacrifice ones health in order to keep up productivity. It\'s not normal to rape and kill innocent people, for any reason. It\'s not normal to destroy the soil, poison the streams, eat out of styrofoam or feel indifferent to the US imposed suffering and murder of millions of innocent people. None of this is normal. Not being able to help a brother or sister in need because you \"have to go to work,\" or being unable to look the masses of disenfranchised people around you because \"I got mine, up yours\" is not normal. Humans are not so inhumane, as the history books would have you believe. We are not so callous and cold. But we collectively have to agree to be in order to continue this abuse of our ourselves and the Earth

I long for the day when Bush the first and his partners in crime will feel the impact of what they have done in Panama and Iraq and now Afghanistan. I want to see my neighbors weeping in their poisonous green lawns for the forest that was destroyed to make it. I want to see Charles Hurwitz, CEO of Maxxam Corporation, allowing his heart to break in order that he may feel the devastating effects on the environment and the people whose lives he has harmed by poisoning the land and water. The sooner we feel the pain and horror, the sooner we will stop this high speed train to ecocide.

The truth hurts. May our collective sorrow contribute to the healing of ourselves and the Earth.

The United States of America is NOT to blame for EVERY fuckin' problem in the world. Are you saying that bin Laden and his asshole pals have NO CHOICE but to attack us? Sorry, even third world losers like the Taliban are human, possess free will, and can make their own choices, and likewise are responsible for their own actions.

You're condemation of the U.S, only helps to validate the hate and sickness of our enemies. Sure, we aren't perfect (like you, no doubt) but we don't deserve to have terrorist shitheads kill us by the THOUSANDS.

You are an embarassment to every American who works to make the world a better place.

Screw you.
