Hunters Point Naval Shipyards. High tech weapons in outer space. What do
these have in common? Why is a coalition of community, health, peace,
environmental, and faith-based organizations planning a large public
gathering called, FALLOUT, From Hunters Point to Outer Space, Communities
Gathering for Action, Celebration, and Support this Saturday, October 13,
2001 at Milton Myers Recreation Center, 195 Kiska Rd. from 1-6pm.

Because when the article, \"Fallout\", by Lisa Davis, was published in SF
Weekly last May, people in the larger Bay Area woke up to the toxic legacy
of the Hunters Point Shipyards. Maurice Campbell and Ray Tompkins, of the
Community First Coalition spoke at the Northern California Abolition 2000
Quarterly Meeting. People were appalled by the story and decided that they
wanted to help put on an event that would tell the story of the shipyards to
the larger bay area. They chose October 13 because it is the International
Day to Stop the Militarization of Space. Actions and community gatherings
are taking place in 109 locations and 19 nations around the world and the
actions are supported by 266 organizations.

The story of the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard is a chilling story of
complete disregard for the well-being of the community surrounding the
shipyard; unfortunately it is a story that is repeated throughout the United
States and around the world. It is important for all people to know the
truth and to stand in solidarity with each other to resist the development
of more weapons systems at the real cost to real people in real places. As
Maurice Campbell said, \"research and development are not benign.\"

Members of organizations based in the neighborhood of Hunters Point, as well
as activist groups based in other neighborhoods of San Francisco, the east
bay, the peninsula, Marin, and Livermore began planning for this day last
June. They have organized a day packed with information, great music, and
food. Members of the artist community are planning a commemorative wall and
are inviting people to bring items to memorialize their loved ones who are
ill or have passed on due to toxic and radioactive exposures from the
shipyard. Kiilu Nyasha is the MC. Maurice Campbell, Sophie Maxwell,
Jacqueline Cabasso, and Kevin Danaher will be speaking about the history of
the shipyards and the plans to militarize space.

Theresa Coleman, Espanola Jackson, Wilson Riles, Marylia Kelly and Dr.
Ahimsa Sumchia will be on a panel looking at how global schemes impact local
communities. Lynne Brown and Maurice are offering a perimeter tour of the
shipyards with information about the clean-up plans. Soul\'d Out gospel choir
and Sonata Pi, a great R&B jazz vocal ensemble, will be providing music.
Rev. Calvin Jones has agreed to conduct the closing ceremonies.

Everyone from the Bay Area is welcome; it is a day to learn about the
victories, and the need for continuing vigilance. It is a day for the Bay
Area to begin to share the responsibility of making sure thatjustice is done
in this community. It is a day that demonstrates to the US Navy that the
residents of the Bay Area do stand with the residents of Hunters Point in
demanding full implementation of Prop P. It is also time for all peope to
send the message that we have learned our lessons and don\'t want other
communities to become contaminated by the US military as they pursue
research and development for missile defense and other high tech weapons for
space.

Recent events help us to understand that peace can only be achieved through
justice, not more advanced weapons systems created at the expense of people
here and far away. Weapons only sow the seeds of more war and sorrow in the
future. The best security will be achieved when all people are treated with
decency and true human needs are met.
