CLARK COUNTY GREENS JOIN REID IN CALL FOR NEW YUCCA MOUNTAIN HEARINGS

LAS VEGAS The Clark County Green Party today endorsed Sen. Harry Reid's
(D-Nev.) call for new Department of Energy hearings on the Yucca Mountain
site in the Las Vegas area.

"The hearing in North Las Vegas on Sept. 5 did not adequately address
concerns over Yucca Mountain in Clark County. We believe the Department of
Energy has already made a decision on this issue, and that decision is
contrary to the wishes to the vast majority of Nevadans; theyre just going
through the motions." Clark County Green Party co-chair Lane Startin said.

The Sept. 5 hearing in North Las Vegas was scheduled and announced within
the minimum requirements allowed by law. Comments were taken well past
midnight and many people did not get a chance to speak. Sen. Reid called
for new hearings in Clark County soon afterwards. Similar public comment
hearings in the rural communities of Amargosa Valley and Pahrump have been
rescheduled for early October.

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham is widely expected to recommend the
Yucca Mountain site 90 miles northeast of Las Vegas to President Bush as
a high-level nuclear waste storage facility. If approved, the facility
would receive six to seven nuclear waste shipments daily for 30 years.
Transportation routes to the facility would affect 60 million people in 43
cities across the country. The Clark County and Nevada Green Parties
oppose the project.

"We are encouraged by the Nevada congressional delegations opposition to
the Yucca Mountain project. We hope Secretary Abraham and the Department
of Energy take our concerns into consideration," Startin said.
