Tonight v. Hate & WAR
SF Town Hall meeting v. hate & war
9/19/01 ANTI-WAR/ANTI-HATE CRIMES - TONIGHT
San Francisco Town Hall Meeting to Stop Hate & War
Thursday, September 20, 7pm
Golden Gate Lutheran Church
601 Dolores St (at 19th St.)
Don't Turn Tragedy Into War!
Dozens community and social justice organizations and hundreds of individuals will come together on Thursday, September 20 at 7pm to mourn for the innocent lives lost in last week's attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. and to found a coalition to oppose hate and war.
The town hall meeting will feature speakers from Global Exchange, the Green Party, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, the International Socialist Organization, and the UC Berkeley Stop the War Coalition.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Our hearts and thoughts go out to the thousands of innocent men, women and children who lost their lives in Tuesday's attacks, and to the millions of people who lost a friend, relative or loved one. But we must not become paralyzed by this grief. Even as the terrible death toll rises, Congress is giving President Bush extraordinary powers to launch a war that will no doubt lead to even more loss of innocent life. Meanwhile, Arab Americans, Muslims, and people of Middle Eastern backgrounds are facing a wave of violent hate crimes, including right here in the Bay Area.
Now is the time to stand up for real justice, not blind military vengeance, and to begin the difficult task of organizing an anti-war movement even before the bombs begin dropping. We will also send a message loud and clear that we will oppose any form of racist scapegoating or attacks on civil liberties.
This town hall meeting will discuss and plan future anti-war and anti-hate crimes protests, teach-ins and other activities.
