SPECIAL BROADCAST: DRUMBEAT OF WAR AND PEACE
-00:00 (joined in progress)\"Dennis Dennis Bernstein w Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!: \"amy Union Square in New York City is historically a gathering place for anti-war vigils.. holding candles for the dead.. Islam is not the enemy.. to be anti-Arab is racist.. we must not create a larger tragedy.. I went to an Afghani restaurant last night.. to let them know we are there for them.. the owner sat down and spoke, took me on a tour of his country with photographs.. Michael Ratner: I was at the vigil in Union Square.. the vigil was not just for peace, but to stop harrassment of Arabic people.. Amy: on Sept 23rd in New York we\'ll be gathering at Central Park.. there will be about a million people.. a lot of things are being slipped through Congress right now.. John Negroponte a supporter of terrorism in Nicaragua, now confirmed as ambassador to the U.N.Dennis: we are anticipating some pretty terrible policy coming out of Washington.. U.S. has never hestitated to take out civilians.. WE\'RE BEATING A DIFFERENT DRUM HERE AT KPFA, THE DRUM OF PEACE..
-12:30 music break: War! What is it good for? *ABSOLUTELY NOTHING*
-16:20 Noelle Hanrahan w Retired Rear Admiral Eugene Carroll of Center for Defense Information: about the scope and range of probable U.S. operations.. i don\'t believe we will go in on the ground.. getting support from the nations of the world is critical.. this is a community, a global problem.. there is little support in the region.. Russia no.. Pakistan has offered limited assistance.. Noelle: the places the U.S. could (for sure) stage from? Admiral Carroll: none.. just our two carriers.. and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.. Noelle: Why do we need bases? Admiral Carroll: 700 miles from the carriers to Kabul.. in flight refueling necessary.. Admiral Carroll: more about the planes, about the armaments carried.. precision guided missiles.. (but) Osama\'s operation highly mobile.. a ground invasion?.. would have to go in through Pakistan, hightly doubtful.. remember what happened to the Russians when they invaded.. about \'collateral damage\'.. there is no such thing as a surgical strike.. we will kill people we should not have killed.. Noelle: Will this bring peace? Admiral Carroll: We can inflict grave damage.. but it will not bring peace, it will not end terrorism, it may will exacerbate it.. we will lose the sympathy shown around the world.. we should make American safe from terrorism.. reduce the motives.. terrorism arises out of abject poverty, and hopelessness.. \'if i can\'t protect my children, if i see my family dying around me, i become a terrorist..\' out of a feeling of shear helplessness, without any hope for the future, they give their lives

-35:00 PNN NEWS
-40:00 Dennis Bernstein: \"Americans there are many millions of Americans (not for war).. (but then there are others) like the Rabbi in San Francisco who urged attacks on Arabs.. now w a lady representative of International Solidarity in East Jerusalem: When we first heard about the attacks on New York.. a look of shock on our Palestinian friends.. we gathered at a family TV.. many Palestinians calling sending their condolences.. Palestinians in front of the American Consulate holding candles.. yesterday 500 gathered.. quickly surrounded by police and soldiers.. Muslim clerics joined us, priests.. Dennis: about the video clip of Palestinians dancing in the street? Lady: where? i was in East Jerusalem, i didn\'t see anything like that.. (but) they do see the U.S. as a symbol of their oppression, providing arms to Israel to attack Palestinians.. about the many many Palestinians in sympathy with the U.S... i am saddened that the media choose to focus on a few misguided people, and ignore the vast majority.. I\'m hoping this changes.. what they are doing.. people here are being stereotyped unfairly.. Dennis: haven\'t seen the video of the Palestinian vigil on TV yet
-52:50 Dennis: report from (gentleman) of Friends of the Earth Palestine in Palestine: the Israeli government is using this tragedy against the Palestinians.. Jenin.. (details the Israeli attacks on Palestinians this week).. back w International Solidarity: a media blackout, 20 Palestinians killed in the last 48 hours.. attacks going on daily.. missile kills 3 Palestinians in their home.. I know Americans can rise up out of this tragedy.. Americans will fight for justice.. (more from the gentleman in Palestine).. yesterday 3 in the morning, in Ramallah, (Israel) shelling and shooting into the houses, like they\'re having a party.. Lady: the situation here is really bad.. i urge your listeners not to ignore what is going on here, not to ignore the terrorism directed at the Palestinians.. the Palestinians stand in solidarity with Americans, against terrorism
-68:10 Dennis Bernstein: about attacks on Arab Americans, people who don\'t \"look\" American.. people of color are scared.. can become victims of this intolerance..
-70:00 music break
-75:00 Dennis: what do you fear? now w Mark from National Lawyers Guild.. Mark: the danger of tremendous overreaction.. Dennis: what kind of abuses do you anticipate? Mark: the INS (may) be going after individuals in this country, innocent, supporters of groups abroad.. about the LA8.. supporters of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.. had done nothing illegal.. raised money for hospitals, schools, etc.. FBI could find nothing against them.. were arrested in dramatic fashion.. know your rights.. we\'re in a very frightening period.. Congress not thinking rationally, just reacting.. people have to speak to Congress.
-82:40 Dennis: about security at the airports
-83:40 music break \"brown shirts\"
-86:40 Dennis Bernstein: with these broadcasts.. we are keeping up the tradition of KPFA... the radio schedule this weekend.. stand up against more civilians being murdered..
-90:30 \"Barbara Dennis: the East Bay\'s Barbara Lee (her email) the lone U.S. house rep to vote against the war: (tape of Barbara\'s speech before Congress).. \'some of us must urge.. restraint.. think through our actions today.. i have agognized over this vote.. Barbara, quoting clergy: \'AS WE ACT, LET US NOT BECOME THE EVIL WE DEPLORE\'

-00:00\"Dennis Dennis Bernstein: The drum of war grows stronger every day, George Bush promises to rid the world of evil... w Noam Chomsky: It was an awesome terrorist atrocity.. Any expression of horror is completely justified.. a new experience for the West.. the history of the West is that we do things to others, they don\'t do them to us.. the first attack on the territory of the U.S since 1812, Pearl Harbor, the Japanese attacked a colony of the U.S... do these kind of things to others, they don\'t do them to us... Dennis: Bush will rid the world of evil? Chomsky: the attacks on Tuesday were a gift to the extremists of all sides.. some of Bin Laden\'s associates are praying for a (extrememly harsh) U.S. reaction.. in the U.S. they want to ram through.. even using it end the capital gains tax.. take the appointment of Negroponti today, the guy is a major criminal (*discussion).. a week ago there would have been plenty of opposition. Dennis: Netanyehu? Chomsky: Israel has been quite frank and open about it.. this is a window of opportunity that the Israeli army... a crushing blow to Palestinians.. who is going to care if a couple hundred of them get murdered.. Dennis: what is some of the history of U.S. retaliating? Chomsky: the last time 1998 they retaliated toward Osama Bin Laden.. the pharmecutical company in Sudan.. probably 1,000\'s if not 10,000\'s of deaths.. who cares? it\'s just a phrase.. that\'s the sort of thing that *we* do.. (discussion of \'old\' U.S. ally, Saddam Hussein).. the last ten years of retaliation has devastated.. has strengthen Saddam Hussein, devastated the populations.. that\'s \'retailiation\' against the civilians.. about the discotethe bombing.. Dennis: a new attack on Iraq? Chomsky: Chomsky: not unlikely that there is some level of state involvement.. a very sophisticated operation.. *we* attack whom we feel like attacking.. advantage of being a super power.. Dennis: this stronger hold on the Middle East on crucial resources.. Chomsky: talks about mobilizing populations by fear.. Dennis: this does seem particularly ominous.. Chomsky: to turn the population into sheep who will follow any order..
-18:00 Dennis Bernstein w Professor Francis Boyle of Illinois University School of Law,: ... this could become extremely dangerous.. [a truly frightening discussion, i cannot review it].. no limitations in here at all, totally up to President Bush what he wants to do.. Pres Johnson used the Gulf of Tonkin Res and the (false) reason behind it.. used that Resolution to escalate into putting a half million men in South Vietnam.. it\'s a blank check.. Dennis: about your appearance on Fox last night? Prof Boyle: I\'m afraid it may get alot worse for us (progressives).. Ariel Sharon would love to... We could see a regional war over there.. very serious consequences.. a very dangerous situation.. [we need to defuse it]
-26:00 Noelle Hanrahan w Michael Franti and Spearpoint (music break) .. it seems all so connected.. we think of this incident as being an isolated thing, but like with Mumia.. the militarization that\'s taken place around the world.. feel the pain, feel the sadness.. act from a place of humanity.. don\'t let it get us down.. stay human really encapselated that.. about professional wrestling... about music.. we all feel the same way, we can bring about change.. Precito Park off Ceasar Chavez.. a number of other bands, and we\'re looking for more musicians, artists.. take a step forward and speak out!.. reason, dissent, and passion.. Sunday 2:00 TO 4:00 PM AT PRECITA PARK IN BERNAL HEIGHTS BETWEEN FOLSOM AND ALABAMA ONE BLOCK NORTH OF CESAR CHARVEZ
NO MORE TAKING THE LIVES OF OTHER PEOPLE
-36:30 music break: Spearpoint: Will You Remember Me?
-39:00 Global Exchange\"Medea Noelle w Medea Benjamin: we are not alone, we can unify, and we can grow.. about the fear that people in the Muslim community feel..
-45:00 Dennis: w Roni of Peace Action, about attacks on people of foreign origin.. 30-40% drop in sales at Arab owned stores.. worry and concern by Arab Americans about their loved ones who worked at the WTC or the Pentagon, and lost their lives.. and worry about State sponsored terrorism.. terrorism is attacking a civilian population in order to get their government to change its policy.. the . > does that by the last tenb years war againts IRaq.. this resolution is truly scarey.. discussion of history and . Dennis: thank you, that wraps it up for another edition of flashpoints.. contact info
