Stay Human

Free Concert and Vigil Featuring Michael Franti Will Occur Sunday in San Francisco

Volunteers Needed to Help Make Our Communities Hate-Free Zones

Please join us Sunday, September 16, as we mourn those who have died and pledge that other innocent lives not be taken. A free concert and vigil will take place at Precita Park (one block south of Cesar Chavez between Folsom and Alabama, in San Francisco) from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. Critically acclaimed hip hop artists Michael Franti (vocalist of the group Spearhead) will perform, along with other local artists. An altar will be set up for people to show their sympathies and grief. Art projects will be offered for kids and adults to express their emotions in other ways.

VOLUNTEERS ARE DESPARATELY NEEDED TO MAKE THE EVENT A SUCCESS!!

VOLUNTEERS are also needed to help make the Bay Area a Hate-Free Zone. We are working with businesses and residents around the Bay to place posters in windows declaring ourselves a Hate Free Zone.

The terrorist attacks of September 11 were indescribably horrific. In just the space of a morning, thousands of people lost their lives. Countless millions more are now scarred with the grief of that loss.

As we grieve and mourn, we here at Global Exchange are urging people around the US to stay committed to peace and reconciliation. Retaliation, we strongly believe, will offer no consolation. We must remember that we cannot recover innocent lives by taking others.

While we call for reconciliation rather than retaliation, Global Exchange is organizing communities around the US to say no to the kind of prejudice that makes terror possible in the first place. Already, Arab Americans, Muslims and others have been the target of hate crimes. This is intolerable. That’s why we are asking communities to declare themselves a "Hate-Free Zone" and to pledge that they will not blame innocent people for the acts of a few individuals.

If you want to help with either the concert or the postering project, please contact Marla Ruzicka at 510-551-1148 or call Global Exchange at 415-255-7296. You can write Marla at marla [at] globalexchange.org.

Postering teams will be leaving Global Exchange Friday afternoon between 5:00 to 6:00. The Global Exchange office is located at 2017 MISSION STREET #303, at Mission Street, right above the 16th Street BART Station.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
