Vigil tonight at Powell and market in San Francisco

by T. Dunne (td_ue [at] yahoo.com)
There will be a vigil this evening at 6pm in San Francisco (Powell and Market).
Several bay Area activist organizations have called for a vigil this evening at 6pm at Powell and Market in downtown San Francisco, as Americans come to grips with the tragedies in New York, Washington D.C. and outside Pittsburgh.

Many organizations, including Global Exchange, and groups affiliated with the Bay Area Stop-FTAA Coalition have been involved in the planning of a local rally and march in San Francisco on September 30th,

in solidarity with planned protests against the IMF and World Bank scheduled for the same weekend in Washington, D.C.

Organizers of this evening's vigil are calling for calm in the wake of this morning's tragedies, and caution against reactionary groups who may see these events as an opportunity to lash out at Palestinians and other ehtnic groups.

Tonight's vigil will mourn the loss of life, particularly in at the World Trade Center in New York, where thousands of people may have been killed. Participants are encouraged to bring candles to this evening's vigil, and a candlelight procession will take place following the gathering at Powell and Market.
