Earth First! Activist and Bombing Victim Darryl Cherney Describes Lawsuit Against FBI and Oakland Police Dept.

Interview by Between the Lines' Melinda Tuhus.

In May 1990, a bomb exploded in the car of Oakland, Calif. Earth First! activists Judy Bari and Darryl Cherney. Bari was almost killed, while Cherney suffered lesser injuries. The Oakland Police Dept. and the FBI arrested Bari and Cherney while they lay in their hospital beds, charging them with carrying the device and of being terrorists who planned to use the bomb in their campaign to save Northern California's Redwood Forests from clearcutting. With no evidence to back up their claim, authorities were forced to drop the charges, but not before conducting a damaging smear campaign against Earth First!

In the 11 years since, Earth First! activists have continued their direct action campaigns to save old-growth forests, but they have also sought justice in the courts over the bombing case. Bari and Cherney sued the Oakland Police and the FBI for civil rights violations. Despite Judi Bari's death from cancer in 1997, the case has gone forward and a trial is set to begin Oct. 1.

Cherney isn't interested in the trees (Redwoods or any others). The trees are just props for his bogus capital extractive lawsuit which is attempting to extort $20,000,000 from the federal government and the city of Oakland. All the evidence points to the bombing being done by Bari's ex-husband Michael Emmet Sweeney. See Flatland magazine #16 for the best researched stories about this case. Flatland can be reached at P.O. Box 2420, Fort Bragg, CA 95437, by phone at 707 964 8326, or by going to the website <http://www.flatland.org>. Almost weekly coverage is also given to this matter by the Anderson Valley Advertiser, 12451 Anderson Valley Way, Boonville, CA 95415, phone 707 895 3016. Another excellent source is <http://www.sonomacountyfreepress.org> which has a tremendous amount about Bari and Cherney.

The website for Flatland magazine given out by Pam, ends in "com", not "org" so it can be found by going to <http://www.flatlandbooks.com>.

Alexander Cockburn also did a great story in 1999 when the pieces by Don Foster and Ed Gehrman appeared in Flatland magazine #16. Cockburn who was one of the featured speakers during the original Redwood Summer in 1990 has his story posted at the site <http://www.counterpunch.org>. Another early post bombing source is the documentary done by Steve Talbot entitled "Who Bombed Judi Bari?" which airred on the first anniversary of the Oakland explosion on San Francisco's public television station KQED. Both this documentary (in VHS) and a subsequent interview with Talbot are also available from Bruce Anderson, the Editor and Publisher of the Anderson Valley Advertiser in Boonville, California. (707) 895-3016. I would also recommend the website maintained by Earth Firster Andy Caffrey <http://www.efmedia.org>. Caffrey's articles and documentation can also be accessed by searching for the term "Hayduke Rocks".

any interview with Mr. Cherney can only be described as "Between the LIES!".
by Curious George
I'm curious why Cherney spends all his time trying to shut down skeptics of his 20 million dollar tort action against various govt. entities. Cherney seems much more anxious to reach a lucrative financil settlement with the govt. and has exhibited not one whit of interest in checking out evidence that does not comport to the Bari mythology!

Why won't Darrel appear and debate with Bruce Anderson. Darrel instead tries to get the forums that Bruce put on last year shut down. That censorship is a disgraceful comment on Cherney's modus operandi.
by Susanne Williams
In a civil suit the only recourse you have is monetary damages. Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney were nearly murdered and the FBI violated there civil rights by not fully investigating and by trying to slander their names and the non-violent group Earth First! by falsely arresting them. The above people that commented are obviously either FBI or wingnuts.
