Italian Ship Picket (day 2) - Dissent is Not a Crime (photo)
*****
Photo: (8/18/01 - Oakland, CA USA)
An activist is led away by two Oakland Police Officers - followed closely by picketers chanting: “Let him go! - Let him go!” and “An injury to one - is an injury to all”. The police claimed that the activist had crossed into Port of Oakland “private” property after being warned not to. The activist was “detained” in the back of a patrol car for ten minutes or so and then allowed to rejoin the picket line.
In the photo an activist carries a picket sign with the words “DISSENT IS NOT A CRIME” - referring to the criminalization and police repression of those dissenting against the status quo - as occurred in Genoa.
---
The Port of Oakland action was undertaken by local activists to protest the violent and inhumane treatment of protesters during the recent anti-G8 protests in Genoa Italy.
