Feature Mumia Abu-Jamal; ILWU & G8

by Justice
When will San Francisco Independent Media feature Mumia Abu-Jamal?
Only Philadelphia and Chicago are featuring Mumia. This case has put on the international stage the fascist nature of the American judicial system and its clear genocidal course. A French delegation appeared at Mumia's hearing on August 17 and France has apparently given Mumia French citizenship.

There have been postings on the San Francisco Independent Media website in the hope that Mumia will be featured for this week's demonstrations, with a major one occurring in San Francisco on August 18, preceded by a smaller one with a press conference at noon that included Labor for Mumia on August 17, consisting of some 200 people. See: http://www.indybay.org/display.php?id=103153

A full explanation of the case was given by one article on this website, originally posted on July 28, 2001, with the explanation given on July 30, 2001 in an addition to that article, at:

San Francisco is a city where the ILWU (longshore workers) made it a union town with the 1934 general strike. It is this same ILWU that shut down the ports in 1999 in support of Mumia Abu-Jamal and it is this same ILWU that is honoring the picketlines in Portland and Oakland of an Italian ship in protest of the fascist government of Italy and its recent police brutality and murder at the G8 conference protests.

San Francisco is an international city, with some 60 consulates promoting trade and international relations, and our residents literally come from all over the world, as is verified by the wide variety of outstanding restaurants here in my home town, representing the many wonderful cuisines of the world.

We expect a large crowd at the August 18 demonstration at Powell and Market at Noon in support of Mumia Abu-Jamal and look forward to the presence of Mumia Abu-Jamal as a feature on San Francisco Independent Media today, August 18, 2001.

[August 17, 2001] At today's court hearing, from which Mumia Abu-Jamal was excluded at the last minute, Judge Pamela Dembe postponed any action on Mumia's request for a new Post Conviction Relief Act hearing in Pennsylvania courts.
Judge Dembe did accept Mumia's new lawyers to represent him, but said she wanted to hear more arguments on the prosecution's claim that the deadline had passed for the admission of a confession by Arnold Beverly. Beverly states that he was the actual killer of Officer Daniel Faulkner. Dembe gave Mumia's lawyers three weeks to submit an argument on why Mumia's petition is still timely, and she gave the prosecution two weeks to respond. After that, the judge will rule on whether to proceed or to dismiss Mumia's petition.
In the court room to observe the proceedings, were well known figures Ossie Davis, Jessie Jackson, Sonia Sanchez, Dick Gregory, and a number of observers from Europe.
Outside, a spirited demonstration of 1500 people demanded to know how there could be a statute of limitations on confessions when there is no statute of limitations on murder. As Ramona Africa said to the crowd, "We're not interested to what's legal we're interested in what's right!"

The main people involved in the Mumia movement around here aren't the indymedia types, and so they don't think to post updates to indymedia. Many of the rest of us who are in-between various movements are too busy organizing and actually showing up at demonstrations to post an update after every single demo.

Thanks for posting the info about yesterday- I looked at the Philly IMC yesterday morning and found out what had happened.

So, we need more organizers and more people posting info...what are the other people reading this going to do about it?

I've been to many demos supporting mumia but unfortunately many of his supporters have created a cult of personality around him. Mumia is not the only issue. There are many vital issues happening. Too say that mumia activists are more busy or more dedicated than the rest of us is insulting at best. Grow up.

Why has there not been any Indymedia attention on getting Charles Manson freed from prison? Mumia is just a man, but Charlie is God.

Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God Charlie is God

Philadelphia Independent Media has a good report from the Family & Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal and the meaning of the kind of briefs the current judge is demanding. See:

Those of us over 50 who have literally spent our entire lives fighting for socialism, who were raised on the Rosenberg-Sobell case which continues to be an important political issue and is comparable in international stature to the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal, who have participated in all the major and many minor political struggles over the past 50 years or more depending on our age, are not the people who need to grow up. We are well aware that there are many issues of concern and we do our best to participate in all of them to the extent our skills and time permit. I am well aware of the people providing the leadership in the fight to save the life of Mumia Abu-Jamal and every single one of them have literally given their lives to the struggle for socialism, for the workingclass and have participated in a wide variety of struggles.

It is those who think they can turn their backs on a man on death row who has also given his life to the struggle at this very crucial time who need to grow up. All we ask is that Mumia Abu-Jamal be featured in the center column for a few days this week as we are at a turning point in Mumia's case.

Every single one of us will continue to work in the wide variety of political causes in which we all participate. I hope the San Francisco readers of this article participate in the campaign for our municipal utility district, SF MUD. That power-to-the-people struggle, now on the San Francisco ballot in November 2001, was announced and promoted at today's rally, 8/18/01, in San Francisco for Mumia Abu-Jamal. The connnection obviously is that Mumia is and the Black Panthers were all about Power to the People. Free Mumia Abu-Jamal!

hello,

thanks for posting your comments, although they would probably get more notice if you sent an email directly to the editorial collective: imc-sf-editorial [at] indymedia.org

in regards to mumia, i think most indymedia people agree that the mumia case is very important and receives poor or no coverage in corporate media (famously including NPR), and deserves coverage on indymedia, no matter how much of a strange personality cult has developed around this case.

sf-imc has featured mumia stories on the center column. i think there are a couple reasons why mumia has not recently hit the center column:

1. most importantly, the editorial collective is volunteer and mostly it is just an oversight, not everything can be caught by the volunteers. your suggestion helps, though.

2. sf-imc has a tendency to be concerned with local stories first, and international stories second. i think this is a positive bias. there is also a global indymedia site which contains information, as well as the local site in philadelphia. many others (chicago and dc in particular) provide even more coverage of mumia. this "distributed" style of coverage has enabled indymedia to provide substantial, diverse, in-depth media coverage of all kinds of stories.

FYI, there are 2 regular scheduled updates of the website homepage, which occur on sunday nights/monday morning and sometime on weds/thurs. there are updates in between those times, but it is mostly haphazard about how that gets updated, because of the nature of the organization.

thanks for your comments.

one other comment, the way that this was presented with researched links and a summary of what is happening is really good. this will help get the story on the center column quicker.
