More Tales from Genoa

by the Imp
Testimony from a friend of a friend in the UK, re Sat eve school raid, & subsequent imprisonment (haven't found it posted elsewhere on IMC, yet)
Statement of Daniel McQuillan

I declare that this is a true and honest statement which I have written on Tuesday 31st July 2001.

On 17th July 2001 I travelled with my friend Norman Blair on Ryanair flight FR972 from Stansted to Genoa. I went to Genoa to join protests against the exclusion of ordinary people from the decisions of the G8, which I believe are based on profit and exploitation rather than co-operation and human need.

On Saturday 21st July I witnessed large and peaceful sections of a legal march being gassed and attacked by police. These events contributed to what I and others felt as an atmosphere of fear in the city that evening.

We were staying at the Scolastica A. Diaz, a large empty school building opposite the Genoa Social Forum Media Centre. The school was covered in scaffolding - I assume it was being renovated during the school holidays. It was being used as an annexe for some computer terminals and as an accommodation space, and we

Yep, cops are the same all the world over. From prison guards in Tibet, to paramilitary "peace keepers" in Genoa, to the LAPD (my personal favorite). Cop sub-culture is like any other.. global, knowing no boundaries of race or nation. Everywhere you go, 99% of them are closet psychopathes.

All you preachers of pacifism, make a note - this is what non-violence looks like. Innocent blood everywhere, and the cops sitting back in their homes with a beer *right now* telling each other "job well done".

This is why we need a Black Bloc. Not rioters and looters committing random violence. Rebels, willing to fight.

Non-violence was fine back in the day when the public at large still had a sliver of human decency. Your martyrdom could have had an impact if it hit the press, back then. Today, people just dont care anymore. "Bread and circuses", that's all they want.

I wish I'd been there with you guys, at Diaz. Motherfucking pieces of pig shit. If I ever see that sort of shit go down in front of me, they're gonna have to kill me. I CANNOT stand by and watch innocent people just get beaten to death like that.

Some day.

Good article, thank you.

Other than the 2 New Jersey senators speaking out for the New Jersey woman who was kidnapped and imprisoned by the fascist Italian police, I have not heard of any US representatives of any kind publicly condemning the police brutality that you experienced and the police attacks on peaceful demonstrations, both as police and as agent provocateurs who were seen conversing with the police. This is further indication that the entire US government is in cahoots with the Berlusconi fascists. Another indication is the report that the world now has that Los Angeles police trained the fascist Italian police to be brutal at this conference. Whatever you do, never vote for the Democrat-Republicans. What a horror!
After reading this, I am struggling with hate and rage, actually shaking. Probably doesn't help that last night i was at a 'Reclaim the Streets' party which was once more shut down by police, many of whose wet dream is to be able to get away with the sort of treatment you and the others endured. As it was, they use milder forms of brutality than in Genoa, yet increasingly they are getting away with more brutality even here in Toronto. ( a few absurd arrests last night, a few beatings- i've seen worse, but given the extremity of peacefulness of the event it was still striking).
I pray to my own personal gods & godesses for justice, change, and finally peace.
I'm inspired by your courage, which I fear would desert me if i was to ever endure what you endured, and thank you for speaking out & fighting on my/our behalf.
