encephalitis or meningitis in birds, humans and other mammals, is turning up at levels double
those found in bird populations last year.There is no vaccine and treatment is directed at relieving

It's like any other disease. It is a bad sign of a whole bunch of things, such as global warming and things to come, but the west nile hysteria is overblown. Also known as dengue fever, its fatal victims are those with already compromised immunity systems, such as AIDS patients, elderly, and the very young. I know someone who got it in NYC, & while it is very unpleasant, it is much like getting the flu (the leading cause of death 100 years ago).

It's one more thing to worry about, but people shouldn't panic about it.

West Nile virus has nothing to do with global warming. The virus, by contrast, is a real entity, not a paranoid computer model.
