The Shortwave Report 7/27/01 ¡LISTEN GLOBALLY!

by Dan Roberts (outfarpress [at] saber.net)
A weekly 30 minute review of stories recorded from a shortwave radio. Free to rebroadcast. (13.6Mb) Radio Netherlands, China, Germany, Spain. Times & Freqs for listening at home
The latest Shortwave Report (July 27) is up on the website ( http://outfarpress.com )
and ready to download (13.7MB/29:52). It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you air it, please mention the website if you only use a portion of it. There were so many notable global events last week that it was hard to decide what to put in the show. Unfortunately, there wasn't much difference in the shortwave reporting of the G-8 events from the US media- the attack on IMC Italy never really surfaced.
This week's show has stories from Radio Netherlands, China Radio International, Radio Deutsche Welle, and Spanish National Radio.
From Netherlands- a summary of demonstrations around Europe protesting the actions of the Italian police; an update on the state of affairs in Nepal; a report from Amnesty International on racism and the 1994 Rawanda genocide.
From China- the Chinese army warns Taiwan to stop doing military exercises with the US and Japan.
From Germany- environmental groups are calling the climate change agreement in Bonn "Kyoto Lite," and a report on the rising tides in Northern Canada; Portugal has decriminalized all drugs, the most comprehensive Harm Reduction policy in Europe.
From Spain- the US rejects a draft proposal on biological warfare in Geneva, making many nations wondering what's up with the US; in Argentina the Senate delayed voting on the austerity measures to reduce foreign debt; in Columbia a retired Army General is arrested for involvement with right-wing paramilitary terrorism; in Columbia Marxist rebels free hostages they'd threatened to blow up inside a hydro-electric power plant; in Columbia Coca-Colas bottling company denies charges that they used paramilitaries to control labor union activities; in Venezvula a state of national emergency may be declared following the execution of a prominent businessman.
I focused a lot on Spanish National Radio this time because their reporting on South and Central America is in depth (only rivalled by Radio Havana Cuba), and only during the summer months is their signal really strong on the west coast. A major goal of mine in doing this program is to encourage more Americans to listen beyond borders, and the US media really underreports on our southern neighbors.
A minor goal is to figure out how to get compensated for the 25-30 hours a week I put into this show- if you have any ideas on how I could get paid something for doing what I've been doing for 5 years, I'd love to hear it. Any ideas?
It's always great to hear from you. The next Shortwave Report will be up by Friday August 3rd 9am PDST.
