Adobe software and the FBI collude in one of the first arrests under the DMCA. The immediate and huge outcry may slow them down.
The Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) embodies the continuing attack on free speech in the technology arena via "anti-piracy" legislation, and Adobe of San Jose has been one of the companies in the forefront. Legal and other threats and attacks against the Russian company Elcomsoft are described on http://www.elcomsoft.com/aebpr.html After a presentation at Defcon security conference in Las Vegas that showed how easy it is to break Adobe's eBook PDF security, on Monday Dmitry Sklyarov was arrested by the FBI, and is being held in Las Vegas.
A large number of individuals and civil liberties groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation blasted Adobe for aiding the FBI in the arrest. Protest were scheduled across the country focusing at Adobe in San Jose. The pressure seems to have had an effect, so as of today the protests are on hold until talks with Adobe executives happen on Monday July 23rd. Check the EFF website for progress.
