DUBLIN — A local bomb squad, trying to dispose of confiscated Fourth of July fireworks, sparked a 10-acre grass fire Saturday morning.

The Bomb Disposal Unit of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department was burning about 1,500 pounds of illegal fireworks when a stray bottle rocket flew through the metal screen used to cover the blaze.

The bottle rocket ignited dry grass outside an area firefighters had soaked with water, Chief Dave Wheeler with the Alameda County Fire Department said Saturday.

“We have to destroy them and this is the most effective way to do that,” Wheeler said.
