No more disconnections!

Public power now!

Organizations denounce electricity/gas disconnection for working
families and the poor

The mdi and the progressive left and other organizations condemn pacific
gas and electric's (pg&e) disconnection of power to the perez residence
- which includes 5 children - and all other discontinuations of
electrical and gas service to working families. We demand immediate
re-connection of services and a repeal of all rate increases.

The story goes like this: pg&e, along with southern california edison
and san diego gas and electric, designs legislation that allows them to
reap $20-billion in combined profits over a period of four years. When
the loophole they put in to guarantee this profit, the frozen rates,
turns against them, they start to cut off power to the state and demand
the rate freeze end immediately. Their wishes are granted.

The big utilities try to spin the rate hike as a necessary condition for
them to continue selflessly providing energy services to california's
working families. But should any of california's working families be
incapable of paying their electrical bills that more than doubled
overnight, they will find themselves in the same situation as the
perezes: unable to heat or light their houses or even cook food for
their children. No payment plan will be made available.

There are presently 86,000 san franciscan households on tight budgets
that cannot afford pg&e and other utilities rate hikes (like garbage and
water). With projected price spikes and rates increase projected to
reach at least 300% in the next 6-9 months, is easy to predict that
thousands of people will have their power cut off. This will deepen the
gentrification process driving workers and people of color from san
francisco and the bay area.

That's why residents of san francisco and brisbane should vote "yes" on
the municipal utilities district initiative on the local ballot this
november and only support pro-working class candidates running
independently of the democratic and republican parties at the same time.
That way we can take producing and distributing gas and electricity out
of the control of lying, profit-driven energy barons like pg&e and do it
ourselves.

I agree with all but one of your comments.

>We demand immediate re-connection of services and a repeal
>of all rate increases.

The power companies, regardless of their corruption, do not owe anyone power. Even trans-national megacorporations are still someone's private property. If you can't afford their rates, don't do business with them. But your need for power *is not* their obligation to provide it.

By all means, build municipal power plants and see if your local politicians are capable of running them to your satisfaction. Good luck overcoming the "not in my backyard!" faction when it comes to construction.

But please don't resort to Davis's socialist looting, using the threat of police force to steal existing plants from their rightful owners. The sound of liberals chanting "send in the cops! Take the plants by force!" is a revolting irony.
