§Tough Fight
I will vote for the fur ban if it appears on the ballot, and that is a big if, but it will not be easy to pass this one. You must remember who dominates the voter rolls, the property owners who are the richer segment of society. This November's election will have more voters than the usual for the city attorney-city treasurer races since we also have SF MUD on the ballot, but it still will not be the comparably high voter turnout of the November 2002 general gubernatorial election. Thus, the rich will have a little more than their usual dominance in this election, and that is who buys the furs. It will certainly be a reality adjustment for the anti-fur people. As much as I support this fur ban, it does puzzle me why people get so worked up about this, but when we try to get people worked up about housing the homeless, saving San Francisco general hospital, providing a decent education in our schools, ending police brutality, fixing Muni (it is still providing rotten service) and all the other basic needs, nothing happens. For most of us, the very idea of buying a fur coat is ridiculous. This is the stupidity of the rich yet there is all this hysteria about it. I spend my time protesting the ills that affect the workingclass. I wish others did the same. If we got rid of those problems, I guarantee you we could get rid of the fur coats. There is certainly no need for that vanity nonsense in such a mild climate as we have in San Francisco. Just letting you know the view from the bottom.
