BART police officer shoots, kills man

HAYWARD, Calif. (AP) -- The Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer shot and killed a man at the Hayward station early Monday after allegedly being attacked.

The shooting took place at the bus stop area of the Hayward BART Station at 4:43 a.m.

The officer discovered the man apparently laying unconscious and went to check on the man. The man awoke, then allegedly grabbed the officer's baton and began to attack him with it.

BART officials say the officer shot the man in self defense to stop the attack. The man was declared dead on arrival at Eden Hospital.

The dead man's name has not been released and the shooting is being investigated by the BART Police Department and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
