FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Renee Saucedo (415) 553-3404
LaborFest and the San Francisco Day Labor Program will sponsor a Benefit
Movie Showing of "Bread and Roses," a powerful film directed by Ken Loach
about the true story of Los Angeles janitors fighting for a union. The
Benefit will take place on Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at the Herbst Theatre, in
San Francisco. A reception and photo exhibit will take place from 6:30 to
7:15, and the film will begin at 7:30. The proceeds from the showing will
go to LaborFest and to the Day Labor Program.
"The struggle of immigrant workers in Los Angeles parallels the local
movement of day laborers and workers in general to achieve fair and just
working conditions," states Renee Saucedo, director of the San Francisco Day
Labor Program. "This film is a very appropriate way to celebrate workers
here in San Francisco, and also to help us raise funds for local worker
organizing."
At the 6:30 reception, speakers will include Myron Paez, an actor in the
film, and San Francisco day laborers. A photo exhibit of day laborers will
also be shown.
Ken Loach is a renown movie director who has directed other films which
depict the lives of working people and their struggles.
