05/12/01 Lockdown for the Mattole!

by Stumps Suck
Lockdown for the Mattole. Activist later unlocked after a deal was brokered by CHP. Sherriff's and Maxxam got pretty frustrated by the fact this protester wasn't arrested. A little while after this, unbeknow that this had happened, a observer was suckered punched by the owner/contractor of PL.

MEANWHILE, WHILE THE SHERIFF'S OUT IN CA. HAVE NOTHING ELSE BETTER TO DO, IS TO BACK UP THAT CHARLES HURWITZ, AND HIS CRONIES, THE FOREST IS GETTING DESTROYED, AND YET THE LITTLE ANIMALS ARE GETTING LOST ALSO.
DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENSE WHEN THE STATE IS RUNNING OUT OF ELECTRICITY, IT SEEMS CA. OFFICIALS NEED TO GET THEIR PRIORITIES STRAIGHTENED OUT. COMEON, WE HAVE ENOUGH TO DO, WITHOUT USING THOSE PULP MILLS FOR MAKING VIRGIN PAPER, WHEN THE RECYCLED PAPER IS JUST AS GOOD. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THOSE PEOPLE, THEY'RE NOT TOO CRAZY ABOUT THE WILDLIFE, AND WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH THE FISH AND GAME MEN, THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO CARE FOR THE LITTLE ANIMALS, APPARENTLY THEY SEEM LESS CONCERN AND PLAYING PATSY FOR THE OUT-LAW LOGGING MONEY.
MY HEART GOES OUT TO ALL OF THE FOREST DEFENDERS OUT THERE, DON'T LOSE YOUR SPIRIT, THE TREES FEEL YOUR ENERGY BROTHERS AND SISTERS, WE LOVE YA!
by sean stewart (makovoo [at] bellsouth.net)
"a tree leaf falls, followed by the tree cut down by the lumber man, death to the forest".which is one the lines used in one of my protest poems. The actions made by Lewis Lumber are irresponsible and totally inhumane the company and the law enforcement which really hasn't taking action on there inexcusable acts of violence should be humiliated. These acts totally infringe on are god given right to the first amendment.I think the american people should be outraged at and help out with backing up the protesters
Go to school, learn how to spell, figure out that strapping yourself to a bridge, tree, building, telephone pole or frisbee won't get real results. Then try to make changes through real polotics, join a party run for a position lobby for changes and make a real difference. This is instead of writing poems about dieing trees, or not grooming or bathing and complaining about pot not being legalized. All of those methods won't do a thing to change the minds of the people who have power in North America. Become one of those people and make the changes yourself, instead of exercising your democratic right and voicing your oposition by not voting. There will be enough patchouli-marinated, doped-up treehuggers to vote you into office and then you start making changes at an astounding rate. Until then, leave people that are trying to make an honest living, working legal and productive jobs alone. If you get off the pot and become productive individuals I guarantee more people will listen to you. Send me all of the angry emails you want. I can't guarantee that I will get back to you whereas this is the first political email that I have written and don't know if I will have the patience to reply to all of them. I am not a hardcore rightwing nazi and I do belive in alot of causes that are being fought. However, I do believe in using the existing forums in which our society functions to fight them.

Cheers,
John Doe

P.S. Before you say that I am stereotyping environmental activists, please think of all of the comments that have been made in regards to the evil corporate america and the stereotypes against any hard working man in a suit that go along with it.

The problem is the system. If the system worked, activists wouldn't have to risk their lives to change things.

This is easy to see by the recent uproar in the social movement. People are sick of the system that runs on money. Government and Corporations are in bed together.

Obviously you believe in the system, and I applaud anyone with beliefs in anything, in our world.

However, we would not be in the predicament we're in today if it weren't for this system.

On the other hand, the earth's delicate network of systems are degrading at a dangerous rate.

Sometimes there is no time for paperwork, lobbying, law educations, and suit wearing.

Oh yeah, and Hippies are fucking beautiful too!

by John Doe (get_a_hair_cut_hippie [at] hotmail.com)
I agree, the system isn't perfect. However, I still stand by my earlier comment that the way to get results is to legitimately use the system to change it. Yes, it takes money. Sign a temporary contract with the devil, enter business, chop down a forest to make enough money to support the changes that you want to make. Look at the bigger picture, this forest will be cut down by another company if something isn't done soon. You be the company, turn this forest into a martyr for the cause. It took one for the team like the soldier that throws himself on the grenade. This act, giving the cause funds to compete at the same level as its adversaries. I just feel that by protesting with the current methods being used, there is no respect being gained for the cause. I know that I look at these people comically, they are the butt of many of my jokes. However, if I saw someone actually trying to use the system to achieve their goals, I might finally pay attention and support them.

I agree with you, Boy Wonder. We have to time to go to school for four years, then go through all that"legal" shit. Mother Earth could be destroyed by then. We need solidarity and communication. Those two factors would help alot.
And Hippies , treehuggers, and the mountain lovers are beautiful!!
I give all my support to the treesitters and protestors over there in Humbolt County.
by benjwa (airrose [at] angelfire.com)
in response to jon doe's second reply: i feel that your sentiments lie within the balance between industry and environmentalism; that there cannot possibly be an economic structure without having a lasting impact on the earth, however small it may appear to be. as far as i am aware of the protests going against such companies as lewis lumber, these folks are far from convinced that the word "conservatism" is ever used by the workers, employers, lobbyists, and whomever is involved in keeping the timber industry strong. the conflict truly is one based on power; the activists obviously are not the ones on the enjoying end of this power. that is why your suggestion to all the so called hippies to use the political system will not prove sufficient. perhaps over a long period of time it would but, without sounding too dramatic, can we wait that long?
i am all ears.

The reason that forest defenders resort to such "odd" tactics is that all other "legal" attempts have failed. All this has been well documented. All one has to do is read outside te ususal sources to find out about it. Certainly one of the organizations involved could supply you with ample evidence. Try RAN, Forests Forever, International Forum on Globalization, IRN, and many others.

Democracy in the US is clearly for those corporate "suits" who have big money and influence, not for the poor slobs who live near the forest and care for it, including some of the loggers. They are being used too. They are out of work because the forests are all being destroyed, not becuase of Earth First types.

One needs to ask:
HOW MUCH is enough? How much logging? How much development? How much shopping, advertising, television, consumption? Is there nothing left on earth that is not for sale? Does nothing else matter?

I have spent a lot of time in the Mattole. It is worth saving the watershed from being turned into cheap decking at Home Depot, or chopsticks in Asia, or paper for junk mail. Lumber comglomerates do not pay anywhere near "market rate" for either the damage they cause or the wood itself, they are grossly subsidized by corporate welfare from the goverment, from your tax dollars, your own money.

I sincerely hope you will read some new material about all this and tell others you know about it.

by Dr. Krad
You're suggesting someone start their own virgin logging operation to compete with existing giants over severely limited resources they won't even be able to access? I know you're just trying to get your "concept" across, but I think you're really insulting everyone's intelligence and have an ignorant "put-down" kind of attitude, and you think you have a better grasp on this situation than people who take it seriously enough to devote their lives to it.

I think it's understandable that someone can be so disgusted with politics and business that they'd rather live in a tree and know they're actually doing something tangible for what they believe in. Fortunately there at least are laws to protect these tree-sitters from being shot at like Indians. And what the fuck is wrong with hippies smelling bad? They seem to do fine like that and fresh water is an abused and increasingly unavailable resource...maybe you could teach them how to take sponge baths, professor. But they probably wouldn't have it since they know Americans like you are obsessive freaks about body odor. I haven't taken a shower in 5 days and I still don't have the plague. Meanwhile there's sissy boys who wear perfume on top of showering 3 times a day using specially formulated soap and shampoo. Everywhere you go, except in the Ewok village. Bitch.
by Dr. KRad
By the way, what are these causes you say you support? You call logging "productive employment". Are you fighting for your causes and changing things at a "rapid pace" from within the system? You've got me interested.

I don't feel that I have to validate myself, however, I will. I have organized fundraisers, not for environmental causes but for several children's causes: Christamas Daddies, IWK Childrens Hospital, Fisherman's Memorial Hospital, the Food Bank, Unicef and the Cancer Society. As far as making rapid changes from the inside, I have just finished my undergrad, am about to start law school and have been involved in politics for the last few years. The changes will start happening in a few years at an exponential rate. I'm not going to give you my name but I guarantee you will know it in about ten years.

by Respect Rights
The aim of the environmentalist is to eliminate mankind. He believes that trees have rights, but people do not. If two come into conflict, or one can benefit from the other, the green will choose man's death. Moreover, the greens opposition to logging, farming, genetic engineering is not to save the planet, but to reduce man to a condition he has escaped thousands of years ago. It does not matter that a hybrid rice can save millions from starvation, mankind is not the standard, but the "natural integrity" of the rice.

Why don't environmentalists admit to their agenda: to destroy individual liberty by opposing capitalism, and to eliminate man's ability to create a better life for himself? Is it because they value all opinions except any that differ from theirs?

hey ya wanna be lawyer, by the time your done with law school, the coho will have gone extinct in california. the last remaining douglas fir intact ecosystem will have been leveled. Oh and by the way, the Timber Harvest Plans cut, were litigated by a 22yr old in pro personia. He went through the "system" and got levied a 4000 fine for his work inside the system. The HCP gives a license to kill. That was the politician deal, not the environmentalists. Half billion dollar scam playing out here. But then again, maybe rosa parks should have gotten on the back of the bus and kept her mouth shut. but then again, maybe she should have gone through the system where the suits like to keep you in place. I'd suggest you learn your history and how effective direct action can be. PL admits they intend to cut the rest of the old-growth in the next 2-3yrs. Gee you can make a difference at that point of trying to restore the watersheds they've level and made into a biological wasteland. trees don't make a forest, diversity makes a forest.
by sister
Don't you understand??? The environmentalists position is not to send man back to the stone age, but to protect the earth from destruction because there is no separation between man and earth. When we destroy the earth, we destroy ourselves, plain and simple. Where do all material possessions come from?? Obviously the only place that we could possibly acquire them-earth. Our material possessions are piling up around us as the things on earth that are used to make these things are rapidly disapearing. Whoever said that man shall rule the earth???? Man is amongst numerous other creatures and living things that have just as much of a right to be here as we do. Who gave us the right to destroy these that share the earth with us?? Who gave us the right to pollute and disturb the delicate intricacies of our universe?? No one....and we all know our shit is fucked if we don't do something about it NOW.
by disrespect unbased vitriol
I get the distinct feeling that you have never once hung around with radical environmentalists and paid attention to what we have to say:

The aim of environmentalists is to create an ecologically sustainable way of life. People living in shitty conditions or afflicted and oppressed conditions will not create a healthy way of life for humans or the greater environment. We are freedom loving people to the core.
It is my belief (and that of nearly every radical enviro, earth first!er and green anarchist I know) that we need to create a richly fulfilling culture where people can be relaxed and enjoy the abundance and beauty of this beautiful world. We feel that living in decentralized autonomous communities with lots of culture and lots of empowered people just having a good time of it IS exactly what is needed.
Capitalism makes more work for everyone and requires huge amounts of people and resources to be totally fucked over for the quivering neurotic obsessive compulsives at the top who hoard property in a vain attempt to insulate themselves from their own massive uptightness. Power trippers rule the world. Fuck that. We aren't communists either so don't try red baiting us. We aren't like the leftists and liberals and we aren't going to whine like them. we're going to do. Our way of doing things is demonstrably more pleasurable than the bllshit world of status games and phoniness that capitalism or communism offer. You don't even have a clue how we live unless you see it.
The happiest, most multi talented, confident, creative, positive and down right friendliest people I know live towrds this goal. We know the issues intimately and we think that the rights of trees and the rights of people are inextricably intertwined. You know, a lot of people who are trying to save the mattole live in the mattole watershed! do you think they want atrazine, diesel fuel, genetic contamination, dead rivers choked with silt, no more fish and wildlife, scarred landscapes, dangerous mudslides, etc. for their neighborhoods? Have you seen the fucking chemicals PL has put on other clearcuts? I don't want to drink diesel fuel! I don't want my friends' houses crushed by mud like those folks in Stafford!
Learn about an issue before you righteously condescend on people who do things with a thousand times more passion and goodwill than you'll ever do anything.

P.S. as we have pointed out thousands of times over: There is plenty of food already, people aren't starving because of lack of food. they are starving because capitalist marketeering and commodity finagling allocates resources only to certain people and leaves others with nothing. Most third world nations with starving populations are exporting massive amounts of food to countries like the US and UK to FEED LIVESTOCK. Theres another good reason many of us are vegan. It takes about 16 pounds of veggies to get one pound of beef from a cow. That's stupid. People in industrial societies are eating more than six times the amount of protein that their bodys require (thereby creating severe imbalances in their abilities to process other nutrients I might add).
Loan shark institutions like the IMF and world bank have bullied debtor nations into exporting animal feeds and tobacco to the first world instead of feeding there own people. Genetically engineered rice is a total bullshit solution to this. It's a red herring meant to confuse us about the real issues at hand. THERE IS PLENTY FOR ALL ALREADY.

There are places in this world people are living in trees
by NT
Working hard is no virtue on a continent where there are already more commodities getting produced, discarded, and destroyed than anyone can use. You don't need two Jeeps and two satellite TV dishes. Most people around here work too hard already, and there's plenty of goddamn work getting done. All those hippies (most of whom already have jobs) getting haircuts and applying for better-paying jobs with more restrictive dress codes would not make America a better place. They'd just turn America's natural resources into trash and toxic waste at an even faster rate than we have to deal with already.

Increasing economic productivity is not necessarily a good thing. Everybody in America already eats. More work getting done won't mean fewer hungry people in America. More work getting done will mean more superfluous crap for America's rich people, lower wages, higher rents, and more stress for everybody.

Find somebody else to pick on.
