My Crime of Serving Food

by Alias Salem (salim [at] mashriq.org)
narrative of how fnbers got arrested serving food at UN Plaza
So leaving work on my way to the Quebec City report back at Muddy's I stopped off at the regular Monday serving of Food Not Bombs. When I arrived I saw my fellow FNBers talking with police. Two bicycle cops warned us that we were in violation of a court order prohibiting the serving of food in UN Plaza. After taking their names and badge numbers (M. Chan #1439 and Trierweiler #377) we decided to wait them out. One of us asked to see the court order the officers then paged their supervisor, Lt. McDonagh of the Tenderloin District #377). The Lt. showed up we heard his argument then decided to move across the street to serve food. We moved accross the street and served on Market. Eventually, we decided we needed to take back our space and brought the last bucket of soup and rice back the plaza. We managed to serve as much soup to the much harassed people of San Francisco before the police regrouped and placed four of us under arrest. Officer Peachey (#1905) and Officer Fischer (#1311) paged the Lt. again. At that time the Lt. placed anyone serving food under arrest. I was cited and released with one other person. Two people without "proper id", that is to say California state ID were taken to County Jail.

TAKE ACTION: Food Not Bombs will be serving Wednesday at 5:30 pm all out to defend the rights of Food NOt Bombers and those under continual police harasment in Civic Center.

after doing a few servings with FNB, ive decided that what they do and how they do it, is aabsolutely great. How cops can think that serving food will do anything t o harm the community id absolutely ludicrous (SP?).

WELL, WELL, WE READ ABOUT THE COPS WANTING TO KEEP FOOD AWAY FROM THE HUNGRY. THEY TRIED TO DO THE SAME THING TO US HERE IN BALTIMORE, AND REMOVE THE FOOD AWAY FROM THE POOR, AND HOMELESS ADVOCATES CAME OUT IN NUMBERS TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES. HOW LONG IS THIS GOING ON! WHEN WE ARE SUPPPOSE TO HAVE RIGHTSS, RICH OR POOR, EQUAL OR UNEQUALITY, THIS HAS GOT TO STOP. STAY STRONG, AND STAND UP TO THAT MAYOR!
HE HAS NO RIGHT TO TAKE THE FOOD AWAY FROM THE POOR,AND THE HUNGRY. SAN FRANCISCO, HEARTLESS AND COLD TO THE POOREST OF AMERICANS!
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
