Before Seattle, Prague and Quebec was Kent State

Having been born and raised in the shadow of the Kent State Univesity campus in rural Ohio, it’s rolling green hills and industrial pockets, it was inevitable that I would end up a student at Kent State. Fresh out of the military I decided to try my hand at college and went off to Kent. Kent is not a bastion of liberality as people are led to believe, more dominated by Reagan Democrats, pro-union conservatives, then by hippie new-agers it is a quiet town where the population doubles during school sessions. I attended Kent State during the anti-Gulf War protests and was a member of the May 4th Task Force, the body which oversees the commemorations of May 4, 1970. While at Kent I befriended a survivor of the shootings. His name was Alan Canfora, an 60’s activist from a blue collar background. I interviewed Alan on a recent visit back in Ohio about the events of May 4th. Here is his story and perspective on the tragedy.
