Humboldt County Rallies in Solidarity With FTAA Actions

In Eureka California, on Saturday, April 21, the Coalition for a Fair Economy and Democracy sang songs of struggle, drummed and marched from the Labor Temple to their federal and county courthouses. Nearly two hundred people turned out on a sunny afternoon, to demand that leaders listen to the concerns of labor, human rights, social justice, environmental and peace groups about the FTAA. The rally emphasized hemisphere-wide solidarity against secrecy and greed, focusing on the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City and the demonstrations and counter-summits being held there. Along with the usual speeches and songs and Food Not Bombs stew, the crowd was treated to phone calls from the streets of Quebec City, from the nonviolent border shutdown at Peace Arch Park in Blain WA, and from the border actions in San Diego.

The coalition met at noon at the Labor Temple at 8th and E in Eureka, where, among open mike and a song from the old coal mines of West Virginia, Humboldt County Supervisor John Woolley addressed the crowd, expressing his concerns that the county government would lose the ability to protect the people and other beings here. TREK FOR TRUTH
On March 20, 2003 I am walking across the nation in the hope of meeting with the First Lady.

I am a 40 year old mom, and I am increasingly concerned for my children-and I don’t know what else to do. Along this walk I will be talking with many mothers — collecting questions and comments to present to Laura Bush.
I want to know how she can support the horrors her husband is perpetuating in our world. This is certainly contrary to how she was portrayed during his campaign. Where is the compassion that was promised? How can she justify the President spending billions of dollars to intentionally kill children and destroy water and sewage treatment plants, education systems, and health program facilities throughout the world? As a mother, educator, librarian, and the First lady of the wealthiest nation in the world, how can she support – through apathy and neglect – the same destruction in this country?

The First Lady needs to come out and tell us – the people
- how she can stand by her husband’s arrogant destructive actions?

I am seeking SUPPORT!!
This is an invitation to join me for part, or all, of this trek.
(Besides, I don’t really want to go through the desert alone!)

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
If you are unable to walk with me, you can get involved by supplying any of the following items:
shoes, backpack, bedroll, cell phone, sunglasses, rain gear, website, water, support van, monetary contributions, and chocolate!

AND PLEASE WRITE TO LAURA BUSH AND ASK HER TO RECEIVE ME!
