Pesticides, Profits & Propaganda 4/13 7pm at New College

by Dan Mattson (handyman [at] california.com)
A state of emergency has been declared to protect the wine industry from the glassy-winged sharpshooter. Residential neigborhoods in Northern California have already been sprayed with toxic pesticides. Come to New College in SF on Friday night to learn more.

Pesticides, Profits & Propaganda

How Will the Glassy-winged Sharpshooter Affect You?

More than 2600 California homes and 13000 acres of primarily agricultural land have been sprayed with pesticides in a statewide effort to eliminate the invasive glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS). This half-inch leafhopper can spread Pierces disease, a threat to grapes and the wine industry. Over 200 homes in Contra Costa County have already been sprayed. And it may only be a matter of time before the mandatory spraying program comes to other San Francisco Bay Area communities.

Does the pesticide spraying pose a health hazard? Are there safe alternatives? Are wine industry profits taking priority over community health? And what are concerned community activists doing in response?

Join us for a teach-in on the problems posed by the GWSS, non-toxic alternatives for their control, the implications for organic farmers and consumers, and efforts being taken by community activists. For a subsequent forum, speakers representing opposing perspectives will be invited to debate these issues.

Panel speakers include:

Dave Blume of Our Farm, Community supported Agriculture, has worked with Santa Cruz county board of supervisors regarding the GWSS.

Marilyn Garrett, Santa Cruz, retired teacher, pesticides/GWSS activist, was part of 1969 DDT nursing moms lawsuit

Linda McElver, Director, Canaries Foundation, created the first countywide pesticide-sensitive registry, member of the GWSS Environmental Task Force

Maxina Ventura, founder, Sonoma Pesticide Alert and East Bay Pesticide alert, calling for an end to the use of toxic pesticides and for epidemiological studies of Sonoma and Napa counties to look at cancer and thyroid clusters and other health problems.

I am a "expert" on pesticides. How by being sprayed twice with them. The first by Champiom Demethoate malathion mix an then this year with Roundup while at school.
I have had my sight effected, nighmares, loss of sleep, and skin to peal-off and my immune system compromised.
I am upset by the list or lack of list of chemicals they intend to use.
One the list includes chemicals, manufacturer is Valent-fenpropathrin for cotton, no emergency permit on file with epa for the Gwss.
The product Naled is corrosive for the eyes, irreversible damage to the eyes. It is also on the list for reregistration. Check .epa.gov/pesicides or
extoxnet
for this data.
most of organophosphates are to reassessed by july 2001 for
heath effects again on the web. This part of the settlement that has gotten no press between the EPA and the National Resources Council on March 20 2001.
"We have set specific milestone for the review of
certain pesticides, and EPA will meet deadlines
required by the food Quality Act (FQPA) to assess
pesticides using current health and safety standards.--
-----Under FQPA EPA is required to reasses 66 % of existing
tolerances by Aug 2003.
0- organophates cummulative risk 7-31-01

As a result they are now processing low-risk pesticides under the idea of Cerified Organic pesticides to take the
place of those THAT POSE THE POSSIBILITY OF BANNING!
The idea now is yell at every opportunity about the health
effect we have encountered to get them off the market under this new law.
They have to listen to us and use those comments in the decisions.
Back to EIR, The list does not contain any reg# or Cas #
for the community to comment on! The things listed are
very confused! There are two listings for endosulfan neither is safe for humans. Naled has irreversible eye damage!
maybe fata inhaled, absorbed or swallowed.
Registration numbers are the number given by Cal for a
pesticid to be used in Cal. Cas number is the EPA number
for registration.
You need demand these numbers and the labels for all the
pesticide they intend to use anywhere in the state.
You to your local Ag Comm and ask for them before they
spray!!
Don't quit
